AUTHOR'S NOTES:
Bryn: I will proudly claim this one as my idea! And I
dragged everyone else into it :-)
Kat: I’m always getting dragged into this kind of
stuff. It’s not my fault!
Becca: Don't look at me, I only wrote the ending!
FEEDBACK: It’ll get you your very own tuxedo-clad
Danny clone.
Of all the outfits Daniel owned, the one that
collected the most dust was the tuxedo. In fact, he
couldn’t remember why he even had it. He had been
certain it was one of those things he’d had to abandon
when he’d been evicted from his apartment several
years ago, but apparently not, as it still hung in the
back of his closet. And for once his pack-rat habits
were going to come in handy, as he now had occasion to
wear the much-neglected apparel.
SG-1 were going to the ball. The Presidential
Military and Armed Forces Ball, to be exact. It was
an annual recognition of the prestigious and
invaluable work done by the armed forces of the United
States, or as Jack had quipped, a reason for the
Generals’ wives to throw a party. Regardless of the
specifics of the origin, the Ball was a large and
important event, therefore the presence of the SGC’s
finest had been both requested and expected, and
despite the never-ending string of complaints which
emitted from Jack, the General had insisted that they
go.
General Hammond, Sam and Janet almost seemed excited
about the event, Daniel was mostly apathetic, Teal’c
seemed interested in the cultural specifics of the
event, and Jack… yeah, well. Nonetheless SG-1,
General Hammond, and Janet had flown to Washington DC
and were now making their entrances at the military
social event of the year.
“Why do I have this feeling that this night will never
end?” Jack asked, snagging a glass of champagne as
the tray walked past him.
“Jack, we’ve been here five minutes,” Daniel stated.
“That’s all?”
“Son, could you at least try to make this a pleasant
evening?” General Hammond pleaded as he approached the
three tall men. Jack was decked out in his full dress
uniform, as was the General, while Teal’c and Daniel
both wore classic black tuxedos. Needless to say,
none of them looked too shabby.
“I’ll make it my personal mission to ensure that he at
least attempts it, General,” came Sam’s determined
reply. The men turned to see the approaching Sam and
Janet, who left them all speechless. Both were decked
out in floor-length evening gowns, blue and black
respectively, with just a touch of make-up and jewelry
to make them completely stunning.
“Then, as always, the fate of the SGC is in your
hands, Major,” General Hammond said with a smile.
“Hey, what’s that supposed to mean?” Jack asked,
trying to look as offended as possible.
“I believe the General is referring to your great
propensity for being tactless, O’Neill,” Teal’c
replied. He was the only one who could keep a
straight face while the others all tried desperately
to hide their grins, except Sam, who laughed at her
Colonel openly.
“Come on, Sir, you can buy me a drink,” she said with
a grin.
“Nope, sorry,” Jack told her. He waited a beat, just
long enough for an affronted look to appear on Sam’s
face, then added, “It’s an open bar.”
Sam shook her head. “Well, if you’re going to be that
way.” She turned to Teal’c. “Come to the bar with me?”
she suggested. “You can have some champagne.”
“I have heard much of this beverage and have never
tried it yet,” Teal’c commented. “I would be honored
to accompany you, MajorCarter.”
“I could use a drink myself,” General Hammond
commented. “I’ll come with you too.”
“Oh, good, I get the two handsomest men in the room as
my escorts.” Sam laughed, winking at Jack. When she
made her way towards the bar, Teal’c on her left and
the General on her right, Jack predictably followed.
Janet shook her head as she watched Sam walk casually
away, completely unaware of the captivated Colonel
following in her wake. “Only Sam,” she muttered
softly.
“Only Sam what?” Daniel asked from beside her.
“Only Sam can do absolutely nothing and look
absolutely gorgeous, leaving every other woman in the
room to feel absolutely plain in comparison,” Janet
explained, smiling to show her statement wasn’t
bitterness, merely an observed fact.
Daniel frowned, looking slightly puzzled. “You’re not
plain. I think you look beautiful.” Daniel’s mouth
dropped as he realized what he’d just said, but Janet
just smiled, though blushing a bit.
Then, as Daniel was still trying to figure out how his
internal thoughts had inexplicably become verbalized,
Janet stood on her tiptoes and placed a light kiss on
his lips.
Got this funny feeling
The moment that your lips touched mine
“What was that for?” Daniel asked, barely.
“For being so sweet. Thank you.” Janet smiled.
Something shot right through me
My heart skipped a beat in time
“You’re welcome,” Daniel whispered back. He didn’t
know why he was whispering, he just couldn’t seem to
make his vocal cords work properly tonight. He was
still staring at Janet, rather awestruck by the
moment, and beginning to notice there was something
different about her…
Janet watched Daniel patiently, oddly calm under his
gaze. She’d spent countless evenings with Daniel
before, yet somehow tonight…
There’s a different feel about you tonight
It’s got me thinking lots of crazy things
Daniel suddenly became aware that the faint humming
noise in the background was actually the orchestra
playing and that most of the room had moved out onto
the dance floor. Extending his hand, he asked,
“Would you care to dance?”
Janet didn’t even break eye contact as she smiled
again and nodded. Raising her hand, she placed it in
his and for a brief second, they stood frozen in time,
amazed by the contact.
I even think I saw a flash of light
Felt like electricity
“Are you having fun?” Daniel asked inanely as he
waltzed with Janet. He was painfully aware of her hand
in his, and he could feel warmth on his other hand
through the thin material of her dress.
“Of course I am,” she replied, smiling. “I’m dancing
with the most handsome man in the room, how could I
not be having fun?”
Daniel, remembering the way Janet had repaid his
compliment, leaned down and touched her lips softly
with his.
You shouldn’t kiss me like this
Unless you mean it like that
Cause I’ll just close my eyes
And won’t know where I’m at
Janet blinked several times, attempting to collect her
scattered thoughts. “What was that for?” she asked,
repeating his earlier words.
Daniel grinned. “For being so sweet.”
“Oh. Well, thanks.” She tried to smile, a difficult
feat with her pulse racing.
We’ll get lost on this dance floor spinning around
And around and around and around
Daniel felt himself bump into someone behind him.
“Excuse me,” he muttered, not taking his eyes off
Janet’s. Either there was no response, or he didn’t
hear it over the beating of his heart.
He realized Janet was saying something. “Hmm?” he
said.
“The General’s watching us,” she repeated.
Daniel turned his head to where Janet was looking.
Hammond’s gaze was indeed upon them. He didn’t look
disapproving. In fact, he wore an expression of what
Daniel would have sworn was fatherly pride.
“I wonder what he’s thinking,” Janet continued.
“Maybe it’s best not to know,” Daniel murmured.
They’re all watching us now
They think we’re falling in love
They’d never believe we’re just friends
“I think some things are better known than kept
secrets forever,” Janet replied.
Daniel smiled mischievously. “What secrets are you
hiding, Janet?”
Janet finally broke their locked gaze and looked away
shyly. “I never said *I* had secrets. I just-“ She
broke off as Daniel leaned forward once more to brush
her lips lightly with his. “What was that for?”
“That was my secret,” Daniel explained.
When you kiss me like this
I think you mean it like that
If you do baby, kiss me again
They continued to dance, sweeping around the dance
floor. “Sam and Jack are watching now,” Daniel
commented.
“Let them watch, we’re only dancing,” Janet replied.
Everybody swears
We make the perfect pair
But dancing’s as far as it goes
“For now,” Daniel replied.
Janet’s eyebrows raised but a faint smile still
lingered on her lips. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Girl, you never move me
Quite the way you move me tonight
I just wanted you to know
“Nothing,” Daniel replied quickly. It was supposed to
mean that he’d never seen her look more beautiful. It
was supposed to mean that, for the first time in a
very long while he was strongly attracted to a woman.
It was supposed to mean that he…
…Was cutting off that train of thought before it led
into dangerous waters.
So, to make sure he’d stop thinking for at least a few
seconds, he leaned over and kissed her again.
You shouldn’t kiss me like this
Unless you mean it like that
Cause I’ll just close my eyes
And won’t know where I’m at
He had been right. It did make him stop thinking.
It had not been a long kiss, but they were both
breathless when it ended. There was silence for a few
moments following it. Then Janet began, “Daniel, what
are we –“
“Shh,” he cut her off. “Don’t. Not now. We’ll
figure that out later. Now let’s just… dance.”
We’ll get lost on this dance floor spinning around
And around and around and around
They danced.
Janet felt light. Light-headed, light on her feet,
and almost as if she was radiating with light. She’d
had no idea that dancing with Daniel could have been
so… whatever it was. She’d never thought of him
really as more than a patient and a friend.
Why not?
Sha’re? Giving her head a slight shake, she stopped
that train of thought right where it was. She’d deal
with it later, -if- it was ever brought up. Realising
Daniel was watching her with slight concern,
presumably about her shaking her head, she smiled to
reassure him. Smiling back, he tightened his arm
around her waist slightly so that she was closer to
him, before giving her another kiss.
They’re all watching us now
They think we’re falling in love
They’d never believe we’re just friends
“Sam and Jack are still watching, so’s the General,”
he whispered into her ear.
“Let them watch,” Janet replied, knowing that the song
was about to end, and wanting to enjoy this moment as
long as possible.
When you kiss me like this
I think you mean it like that
If you do baby, kiss me again
Daniel looked down at Janet as the last strains of the
song died away, looking into her liquid brown eyes.
They stood for a few moments as the other dancers
exchanged small talk and waited for the next song to
start.
His lips started gravitating towards hers, and she
closed her eyes in anticipation. In silent agreement,
their lips met halfway and they lost themselves in a
moment, barely comprehending that the next song had
started, and the other dancers were drifting in
circles around them. After an eternity, they broke
apart, heading over to a table to one side of the
dance floor, hand-in-hand.
Tonight was the turning point. Tonight was theirs.
