"One man betrayed with a kiss"
- "Pride (In The Name Of Love)", U2
He kissed her back.
It took some time for Daniel to realize what he was doing. When he did, he
pulled away. He stared into her eyes, all too conscious of his racing
heartbeat and ragged breath. He swallowed. "What was that?" He tried to
make his voice sound demanding, accusatory, but the question came out as
more of a plea.
"That was me making a point," she told him, almost sharply. Daniel
suspected her tone had more to do with trying to control her emotions than
genuine anger. "Daniel Jackson, don't you dare try to tell me you don't
have any feelings for me beyond friendship. Don't you dare. You can lie to
yourself, but I'll be damned if I let you lie to me."
"Janet -"
She cut him off. "You do have feelings for me, Daniel. We both know you
do; that kiss proved it."
She was right. That damned kiss. Daniel hid a grimace. How was he going to
hold her off now?
For hold her off he had to. He did care for her, that much he admitted to
himself. He cared enough that he didn't want to hurt her. He didn't want
for her to hurt him. And those, in Daniel's eyes, were the eventual
results of any sort of entanglement other than friendship.
But how was he to explain that to her? He didn't know if he could, let
alone if she would believe him. Her eyes were wide and he could feel the
depths of the anger and passion and pain they held.
"Janet," he started again. "You're one of my best friends, and I love you
for that. But it can only ever be as a friend."
"Why?" The word was clipped and short and Daniel didn't know how to
answer.
"Because… It's for the best. Don't just ask why again, think about it.
Think about my track record, of yours. It wouldn't work, Janet. And I'd
rather have your friendship than nothing, later on, which would be
inevitable."
She was silent for a few moments as she gave him an evaluating once-over.
"Do you really have that little faith?" she asked finally.
"It's not a lack of faith, it's pragmatism."
"If that's the way you see it, then you're not the man I thought you were.
I love you, Daniel, but I'm not going to waste my life pining after you.
Come and find me when you realize you're lonely. If I haven't moved on by
then."
Before Daniel could say anything, she walked out.
