Cassandra was walking down the corridors of the SGC. Since she graduated from high school, she had a higher clearance. She was now studying physics at university. So every now and then she came to the base to the labs to do some research or just to talk to the scientist there. They always have something new to tell her. But mostly Cassandra went there to hang around with Sam. Besides the fact she was the most intelligent and brilliant scientist there, she also had the most fantastic stories to tell. And there was also the fact that Sam was kind of a second mom to her. Cassandra was looking for her now. She got to her lab and knocked on the door
"Come in," she heard Sam's answer and entered the lab.
"Hi Cassandra, how are you doing?" She got up from her bench and gave her a hug.
"Hi Sam, I'm fine thanks. What are you working on?"
"Oh, this is some device SG6 found yesterday during their mission. I have to figure out what it is, but I have no clue actually. I'm not even sure if it still works. To me, it looks like it's something that someone has lost a couple of years ago and I don't think it's important. But then it could also be Goa'uld. So how are your classes going?"
"Ok, I haven't got much problems. But they're pretty boring, considering the things you are doing here."
Sam smiles. "So what do you want to know, Cassandra?"
Cassandra smiles back at her for getting the hint. "Well I still have some questions about that whole wormhole theory. There are some things I don't get yet."
"Ok, take a seat and shoot your questions."
Sam tried to answer her questions as good as possible. She had to simplify some things here and there, because Cassandra doesn't have enough basic knowledge about physics yet. At least she understood the concept of comparing the universe with an apple.
Somewhere during Sam's explanation, Colonel O'Neill walked into the lab and heard they were talking about ... something. "You actually understand what she is talking about?" he asks Cassandra.
"Hi Jack!" Cassandra gets up from her stool and gives him a hug.
"Hi Cassie."
"Hi Sir. What brings you here?"
"Oh, I'm just trying to avoid paper work. So what are you two doing?"
"Cassie asked me to explain her the wormhole theory."
"And you understand it?" Jack asks incredible.
"Yeah, I'm getting there. I think I got the basic principles."
"Great, just what I needed. Another person to give me a headache with
their techno babble."
Sam and Cassandra just smiled at that. "Well, I guess I better leave you two to it. Have fun." And he was gone.
"I suppose science isn't his thing?" Cassandra asks.
"You have no idea," Sam said still grinning. "So do you have any more questions?"
"Not really. But I wonder ... what happens if the gate malfunctions?" she asks a little hesitant.
Sam notices her hesitation and gives her a little smile. "In normal circumstances the gate doesn't malfunction. But if it does, then it depends on the kind of malfunction. If the wormhole disengages while you're still in it, well, they're won't be anything left of you. You're just ... gone. But there are also other kinds of malfunctions. For example, an energy blast on the wormhole can alter the wormhole's destination."
"How do you know that?"
"Well, I experienced it myself."
"What?! How?" Cassie exclaims.
"We were under fire while returning to earth. When Colonel O'Neill and I got through the gate, a staff weapon blast hit the wormhole. We ended up somewhere on an ice planet. At least that's what we thought. In reality we were on Antarctica."
"There's a gate on Antarctica?"
"There was. Haven't you heard that we had two gates at some time? Anyway, Daniel found out where we were and General Hammond send a rescue team, thank god. It was pretty cold out there. Plus Colonel O'Neill had a broken leg and a couple of broken ribs too. It wasn't a pretty sight, I had to set a splint."
"Ouch, I don't think it was a nice experience for him."
"Are you kidding? He probably won't ever let me near him again whenever he's injured!"
Cassandra couldn't help but laughing. "Any other weird stuff happened?"
"Actually yes. The gate can be used for time traveling."
"Really?! That's so cool! You could visit yourself in the past or even in the future! Wow!" Cassie exclaimed excited.
"Well, we did." Sam smiled. At Cassie's confused look she continued. "Maybe this is a good time to tell you."
"Tell me what?"
"Just let me start at the beginning. When a wormhole gets close to the sun and there occurs a solar flare, the gravity of the sun sends the wormhole back to earth. And you're able to end up in the future or in the past. It depends on how the wormhole goes around the sun. So one time we ended up in the past by accident. In 1969 to be exact."
"Uh? That's so weird. How did you get back?" Cassandra says a little
shocked.
"General Hammond helped us. Before we left through the gate, he had given me a note. We also met him in 1969. He was still a Lieutenant back then. Lieutenant Hammond found the note and recognized his own handwriting. Of course he wanted to know what was going on and after some explanation he was willing to help us. When General Hammond got assigned to the Stargate Program he probably realized what had happened all those years ago. He searched for the right dates and times in which solar flares occur and put it in the note. That's how we could return."
"Time traveling. Sounds pretty cool. Can't we use it in our defence against the Goa'uld?"
"Technically it is possible, but it is far to dangerous. By going to the past you could do some things that could entirely change your own future. And of course there is also the problem of getting back."
"Mmm yeah, that's probably not such a good idea. So then you just got back home?"
"Uh, no. That's where you come in."
"Me?" she asks confused.
"Yeah, you. We got back to the future, but we ended up just a little to far. I have no idea what year we were in, but we met you." Sam smiles at the memory. "Considering your age we were pretty far in the future. You probably had already some grandchildren at that time."
Cassandra raises her eyebrows. "That must have been pretty weird."
"It was. You were suddenly double my age." Sam grins.
Cassie just shakes her head in disbelief. "So what happened?" she asks curious.
"You send us back to the right time."
"Sam! You know that's not what I mean!" Seeing that Sam hesitated a little she added, "If you tell me exactly what happened I can't do or say anything wrong in the future."
Deciding that there was a point in that Sam started to tell her the whole story. "When we got through the gate, there was nobody there and everything was covered in dust sheets. Then you appeared, we never saw anybody else. Of course we didn't recognize you, but you greeted us." Sam smiles sadly as she remembers the way Cassandra had greeted Daniel... Suddenly her eyes grow wide and she gasps. "Oh my god," she whispers.
"What? Sam, what's wrong?!" Cassie asks worriedly.
"He's alive."
"Who is?"
"Daniel."
"Daniel?!"
"Uh, yeah. And it actually makes sense too." Sam was still whispering and staring into space.
"What do you mean?! How is that possible?!" Cassandra got impatient.
Sam swallows hard as she start to explain. "Just by the way you greeted him. You said: `Daniel ... I hardly recognized you WITH hair.' Which means... "
"... that he must still be alive, because I've never seen him WITHOUT hair!!!" Cassandra finishes for her.
"Yeah, exactly!! He has got to have the chance to grow old and lose his hair at some point. I wondered at the time why made that comment, but now it all makes sense. You couldn't say anything about what would happen, but you could give some hidden message for the future. When I would tell you about this, I would realize what you meant. And by telling you now, you know you have to give that message in the future. And that completes the circle."
"Wow, this is just ... wow." They're both sitting there open-mouthed, shocked from the realization.
"Yeah, it is." Sam agrees. "I have got to tell this to Janet. Let's go find her."
And they both run off...

I might write a sequel to this in the future, but then I have to see season 5 first. If anyone feels like writing a sequel to this, be my guest. And let me know!!
