Janet Fraiser moaned as she rolled onto her back and her hands reached instinctively to clutch at her aching head. She forced her protesting eyes open and stared in confusion at the dull, metallic ceiling above her as she began to shiver with cold. "What the.Daniel?" She groped blindly for her new husband; more concerned with why she hadn't awoken with a six-foot archaeologist wrapped around her as usual than the fact that she didn't know where she was or how she got there. "Daniel?" Forcing her throbbing head to turn Janet found herself staring into a pair of terrified brown eyes in a definitely female face. "Oh my god!" Shooting into a sitting position, Janet clutched her pounding head and whimpered as it felt like her brains were making a spirited dash for freedom through her ears. "What the.Who the hell are you?"
The young woman who had been lying next to her, scuttled hurriedly backwards, high pitched yelps of terror making Janet grit her teeth and wish desperately for some Advil. "Ok, ok, calm down. I'm not going to hurt you." Trying to look reassuring and not hurl the contents of her stomach all over the floor at the same time, Janet managed a pained smile. "Let's just take a minute here, ok?" She plastered a cool hand to her aching forehead and forced herself to think. She'd been on a good will mission to PX3468 with Sam and."Christ, Sam!" Janet's head flew up and she stared wildly around her. "SAM?" For the first time she saw all around her lay limp bodies, mostly small and all a lot curvier than the average male and, to a woman, they all appeared to be deeply unconscious. "Oh crap. Sam." Ignoring her nausea and the dizziness making her vision swim alarmingly, Janet scrambled to her knees and crawled among the women searching for a flash of familiar blonde hair in the dim light. "Sam? Sam, if you're here speak to me. Sam?" A groan had Janet freezing in her tracks and her head anxiously turning from side to side as she searched out the owner of the voice. "Sam, is that you?"
"What the hell is going on?" Much more used to waking in strange places aching all over than her friend, Major Samantha Carter popped up like a jack-in-the-box and shoved a lolling body off her legs. "Where the hell am I? Colonel? Are you there?"
"No, it's me, Janet." Uncaring of whom she stepped on in her mad dash to reach her friend, Janet stumbled to her feet and across the room. "It's just us."
Sam pressed a hand to her head and grimaced. "Great." She allowed herself a small shiver and then appeared to shake off whatever was paining her. "What's going on, where are we?" With Janet's aid she managed to climb to her feet and the two women supported each other as they swayed uncertainly together and took stock of their surroundings. "Oh this can't be good." Sam looked around the large chamber they had woken in, took stock of the women on the floor, the still yelping woman apparently trying to crawl through the wall behind her in a bid to get away from the two human women and most importantly the four Jaffa warriors standing watching them impassively from the other side of a shimmering blue force field. Sam staggered slightly as a wave of dizziness hit and groaned. "Oh
no. Not again."

"Cass, come on, you're going to be late for school." Daniel Jackson stood at the bottom of his stairs and glared at his watch as he yelled for the third time in as many minutes for his stepdaughter. "CASSIE!"
"I'm *coming*!" The slender teenager thundered down the stairs like a herd of rampaging Jaffa and scowled at the impatient man. "Jeez, Daniel, calm down."
Daniel ground his teeth and snatched up his carry case as he took Cassie's arm and guided her towards the front door. "We should have left ten minutes ago."
Cassie shook her arm free of his grip and stomped down the steps to front path. "I have a free period first thing, it's not like I'm gonna miss anything." She tossed her head and stomped towards the car. "And I'm tired, I had a late night."
"Which you are so grounded for." Daniel hurled his bag into the back seat and slammed his door as he climbed behind the wheel of his car. "I told you to be back by ten at the latest."
"I was *studying*!" Cassie pouted and folded her arms in disgust as the car squealed away from the sidewalk. "God, you'd think I'd get a little credit for wanting to do well in my finals."
"For that, yes." Daniel ground his teeth as he remembered the extremely compromising position he'd found Cassie and her latest boyfriend in on his front porch at eleven o'clock the previous evening. "For trying to chew the face off what-his-name, no."
"Joey, his name is Joey!" Cassie tried, and failed, to suppress the sly grin that spread over her face as she also remembered the previous evening. "And I was just thanking him for seeing me home and helping with my homework."
"Next time send him some flowers." Daniel flicked an irate glance at the unrepentant teenager. "When your mom gets home tonight I'm going to tell her what you did." Cassie snorted unimpressed and Daniel's lip curled in annoyance. "*And* I'm going to tell Jack."
"You wouldn't!" Cassie stopped pretending to ignore Daniel and twisted around in her seat looking horrified. "That's mean."
"That's life, kid." Daniel shook his head sorrowfully. "I really hate to do it too. You know how Jack gets about this sort of thing." He grinned evilly. "He's gonna have someone following you every time you set foot out of the house until you leave for college. Maybe until you turn sophomore."
"He wouldn't dare." Cassie thought of her *Uncle* Jack nervously and tried to swallow to ease her suddenly bone dry mouth. "*You* wouldn't dare."
"I don't know, I think allowing you to continue to break curfew might constitute a breach in national security." Daniel's evil grin widened as Cassie's face paled. "I'm nowhere near as nice as I used to be, Cassie. Remember that."
"Daniel, *please* don't tell Jack." By now seriously worried, Cassie realised that a lot of fast-talking was in order. "I'll help you clean out the store room at the weekend." Daniel raised an eyebrow and she hurriedly continued. "I'll clean out the store room by myself, you can take Mom somewhere nice for the day. And I'll detail your car. For a month!"
"Two months." Daniel couldn't suppress the triumphant grin and added. "And you cook when it's my turn for two weeks." He caught her mouth opening in protest from the corner of his eye and said gleefully. "I could tell Jack *and* Teal'c where the kid's hand was when I opened the door."
"Deal!" Cassie swore she felt a vein in her head pop at the thought of an incredibly unimpressed and over-protective Jack and Teal'c learning just how friendly she and Joey had become. "Deal!"
Daniel pulled up in front of her school and waved cheerfully to the usual gaggle of girls waiting for Cassie by the front steps. He wound down his window as she grabbed her bag and slammed the door as she exited the car. "Have a nice day, Cass!" He sniggered at her glare as she stomped off and then pulled away to head for the SGC and some nice uncomplicated end-of-the-world crisis. "I am so getting the hang of this parenting stuff."

"Ok, we just need to stay calm and evaluate the situation." Sam winced at the continuing wailing from the girl in the corner and then rolled her eyes as another couple of women came to and joined her. "Which would be a lot easier if they'd shut up and let me think." She pressed her fingers to her aching temples and muttered to Janet. "What's the last thing you remember?"
Janet forced herself to ignore the weeping women and the ominous looking Jaffa and concentrated on Sam's question. "I was in the village hall and the elders were talking to me about the vaccinations I'd just given the infants." She rubbed her own head as she tried to picture the scene. "My back was to the door, I think I heard a footstep outside and I began to turn and then.nothing." She groaned in frustration. "I can't remember what happened next."
"Well, from the way I'm feeling I'm guessing we got shot with a zat." Sam shivered as her body registered the chill in the room despite the press of so many bodies and tapped her fingers impatiently against her thigh. "I was outside making sure all out stuff was packed. Someone called my name, I looked up and then the next thing I know I woke up here." She worried her lip in nervous frustration. "If the village was being attacked we'd remember something, screaming or shots, I'm guessing that we were betrayed by one of the natives."
"My uncle." The two SGC officers turned at the sound of the low voice and saw one of the women that they had become friendly with over the past few days whilst on their mission sit up slowly. The girl, a young woman by the name of Ria, pushed her thick hair back from her pale face and looked around fearfully. "The Choosing was not meant to be for another two moons, he must have summoned the Jaffa early."
Janet swapped an alarmed look with Sam. "The Choosing?"
"In return for enjoying prosperity and security for out village, our elders choose the most appealing among our young and sacrifice them for the good of all to our God." Ria rubbed a hand across her mouth and blinked back frightened tears. "The Jaffa come to claim them every fifth cycle of the seasons and they are taken from their families and never heard from again."
Sam thought furiously for a moment. "Every fifth cycle? That means every five years, right?" At the girl's nod, she felt her heart begin to pound. "And your village gives up it's young to a God?" Ria nodded again and Sam began to feel very, very sick. "But you said you had no God. There were no signs of any worship in your homes."
"My uncle said we were to say nothing and hide evidence of our God from your sight when you came. He said he had heard tales of the people that came through the Chappa'ai and that if they knew we worshipped our Gods they would kill us and leave our homes burning as a warning for others." Ria began to sob in earnest. "But you were kind and helped us and I do not understand why he has done this."
"I think I do." Sam folded her arms tightly over her body and hugged herself. "It was a set-up, we walked right into a trap. Ria, what's the name of your God? Who does your uncle serve?"
The young girl raised her wet eyes to Sam and Janet's worried faces and uttered the one name that was guaranteed to completely ruin any member of the SGC's day. "Anubis, his name is Anubis."
Janet flinched and turned to look at the Jaffa guards still watching them impassively. "Oh crap."
Sam buried her face in her hands with a low moan. "I hate that guy." She lowered her hands briefly and glared at the shaking Ria. "And for the record, he's not a God. He's an ugly, oily, half-breed higher being thing that should have been dead long ago. I should know, I've tried to blow his ass up enough times." She rolled her eyes at Ria's stunned face. "He's an ugly little snake who got delusions of grandeur not some all powerful being, ok? He's just a guy."
"He is a God and you will cower before him, Tau'ri bitch."
Sam and Janet spun at the sound of a harsh voice and Sam groaned again. "Oh no, not you."
"You know this guy?" Janet looked the warrior in the doorway up and down uneasily. "I'm guessing there's no chance whatsoever he's in with the Tok'ra and he's here to rescue us?"
"Not a hope in hell." Sam raised her chin defiantly as she addressed the man staring at them imperiously. "Hello Herak. Nice hat."
The First Prime snarled at Sam and then his face creased in a cold smile. "My master will be pleased with me when I present him with you, Carter of SG1. You will bring me many rewards." His eyes landed on Janet and then moved dismissively back to Sam. "And your companion may make an adequate servant."
"Hey!" Janet paused as she realised that just making the level of servant might be a good thing under the circumstances. "Never mind, go on."
"You know O'Neill and the others will come after us, Herak." Sam made a conscious effort to keep her voice steady and her eyes level as she stared down the Jaffa. "They won't stop until they find us. Save yourself a lot of trouble and let us go now."
The Jaffa eyed Sam for long moments before laughing derisively. "I am not alarmed at the prospect of facing your master once more, woman. My Lord will crush him and all that follow into dust and make you watch as they scream for mercy."
"I just knew you were gonna say that." Sam shrugged and looked as unconcerned as she could under
the circumstances. "Well, don't say we didn't warn you." She eyeballed the Jaffa for long seconds,
refusing to look away first and then allowed her mouth to quirk briefly in triumph as he turned
and marched off.
"You're taking this very well." Janet shoved her hands in her pants pockets to hide their trembling and hoped her voice wasn't shaking as badly. "This isn't as bad as it seems then?"
"Oh no, this is just as bad as it seems and then some." Sam turned away from their Jaffa guards and began to step over the stirring bodies on the floor as she headed for the walls of their over-crowded cell. "We need to find a way out of here and we need to find one now."
Janet hastily followed her friend. "Really that bad?"
Sam turned from where she was tapping hopefully at the wall in search of a maintenance panel, anything to give her something to work with and stared with frightened eyes down at her friend. "Janet, it's bad enough that Herak knows who I am and what capturing me will do for his standing with Anubis." She lowered her voice and bent close to Janet's ear. "If he manages to find out who you are then our asses are toast."
"Me?" Janet's voice was louder than she intended and she lowered it at Sam's pained look. "Me? What's so important about me?"
"On the face of it nothing." Sam shrugged apologetically at her friend and lowered her voice even further to a barely audible whisper. "But if he realises that you're connected with Daniel and not just another member of the SGC then we're in really big trouble."
"Daniel?" Janet ignored the stab of pain and longing to her heart at the thought of her husband and frowned in confusion. "What's Daniel got to do with this?"
"Nothing. And everything. Janet, if Anubis finds out that you are Daniel's wife then he'll use you to bring Daniel to him." Sam's fists clenched impotently at the thought of the danger they were all in. "The last time Daniel and Anubis faced off it wasn't pretty, but Daniel was ascended then. Now he's very much human and he has a very human weak spot. You."
Feeling more terrified by the minute, Janet shook her head in bewilderment. "But if Daniel's human then he's not a threat to Anubis." She paused, considered her words and then allowed with a ghost of a smile. "Well, except in the usual blow-stuff-up way that SG1 usually are to the Gou'ald."
"But he still has memories of his time with the Ancients buried in his sub-conscious mind." Sam swallowed nervously. "Ok, he can't really remember anything at the moment but there's nothing to say that Anubis couldn't find some way to dig it out of him. Daniel is the only person we know of that ever came back from an ascension; he's invaluable to anyone that might be able to access the information he might carry. Daniel says that Anubis is some kind of perversion of an ascended being, if he thinks that the information trapped in Daniel's mind might be attainable and useful to him then he'll stop at nothing to get it. We *need* to get out of here before Jack and the others start turning the galaxy upside down looking for us and Herak or Anubis realise who you really are."
"Oh God." Janet felt the blood drain from her face as she thought of Daniel and Jack charging to their rescue and inadvertently falling into Anubis' hands. "You're right, we need to get out of here. What do you need me to do?"
Sam tried to smile reassuringly. "Look around for anything that I can use to hack into the main computer or at least short out the force field and give us a chance to break out of here and find some weapons." She touched Janet's shoulder as the other woman turned away. "We'll get out of here, Janet, I promise you. You'll be back with Daniel before you know it." She watched as Janet nodded and then muttered to herself as she turned back to the wall. "Or we die trying."

Colonel Jack O'Neill stared up at the uncomfortable looking airmen that had drawn the short straw in the control room to break the bad news. "What the hell do you mean they're missing?"
Airman Lincoln shuffled his feet; kept his eyes trained straight ahead to focus on the risqué calendar pinned to his commanding officer's notice board and repeated himself unhappily. "Major Carter and Doctor Fraiser failed to make the rendezvous point on time, sir. SG8 went into the village to see what the hold up was and found that the natives had abandoned the settlement and there was no sign of either the Major or Doctor Fraiser." He cleared his throat and offered helpfully. "We found all their kit and instruments intact."
"I don't care about their goddamn instruments I want to know what happened to our officers!" Jack's bellow echoed through the room and had the airman rocking back on his heels. "Call General Hammond off leave, tell him it's an emergency, and then find me Doctor Jackson and Teal'c." His fist slammed onto his desk and had the soda can there leaping along with the nervous airman. "NOW!" He jumped to his feet as the younger man sprinted from the room and moved at a dead run for the control room. "What the hell have you gotten yourself into now, Carter?"
