Our Universe
Stargate Command
The infirmary

Doctor Daniel Jackson was in the infirmary. As it often happened, the archeologist had been wounded during the last mission. So, Doctor Janet Fraiser was examining him to make sure that there were no serious problems.

"There you are," said Janet as she finished her examination. She was satisfied that there was nothing to worry about.

"Thank you," replied Daniel, with his charming smile.

"No problem," said Janet, smiling back at him.

An airman arrived, and approached them. "Doctor Jackson. Doctor Frasier. Your presence is required at the briefing room for an emergency meeting," announced the airman.

Daniel and Janet looked at each other, wondering what was going on. The debriefing for the last mission was not supposed to start for an hour, which meant that something important had happened to explain this change of plans.

Daniel and Janet arrived to the briefing room and were welcomed by a surprising sight.

The recently promoted Major Samantha Carter had in her arms a small baby. Besides her, Colonel Jack O'Neill was making funny noises to the baby, trying to make him smile.

For a moment, one could almost imagine them as a family…

Intrigued, Daniel and Janet sat down.

"All right, people. Thanks for coming on such a short notice," said General Hammond.

"General, what's going on?" asked Daniel, looking at the baby.

"A couple of hours ago, some guards at Area 51 found this baby near the quantum mirror. It seems that the baby was sent here from another reality, but there was nobody else with him. However, the guards at Area 51 found a note with the baby. They sent the baby to us after reading the note," explained the General, looking at Daniel.

"What did the note say?" asked Daniel with curiosity.

The General passed the note to the archeologist. Daniel had assumed that the baby was the son of a Sam and a Jack from another reality. So, he was surprised to find the truth as he read the note.

"This baby is Andrew Jackson.
He is the son of Doctor Daniel Jackson, of SG-1.
Our world is under Goa'uld attack.
Andrew needs your protection.
We will do our best to come back for him, but in case we don't,
Please take care of him."

"Well?" asked Jack after Daniel finished reading the note.

"Well, it is my handwriting," confirmed Daniel.

"So, this is an alternate universe Daniel's baby," asked Jack, looking at baby Andrew.

"That's what the note said," replied Daniel, returning the note to General Hammond.

"I am wondering about this Goa'uld attack. Why didn't the Protected Planets treaty prevent that?" asked Jack. The colonel was thinking about the recent negotiations initiated by the Asgard to include Earth in that treaty, and for which he had been Earth's representative.

"I can see two possibilities. First, Earth has not been included in the Protected Planets in that other universe. Or, second, the Goa'uld didn't care and violated the treaty by attacking Earth, risking even an encounter with the Asgard," theorized Sam.

The rest of the group was quiet, thinking about the fate of Andrew's universe.

"What can we do to help them with this Goa'uld attack?" asked Hammond.

"We could try to contact our allies, see if they can help Andrew's universe," suggested Daniel.

"Very well," said General Hammond. "We will send some teams to meet with them."

"What about Andrew? " Janet asked, concerned. After all, they were responsible for the baby as long as he stayed in their universe.

"Doctor Jackson, do you think you could take care of the baby?" asked the General.

"Euh, I guess so," asked Daniel a bit nervous. But he soon added: "Yes, I will take care of him. After all, I am his father for him," he said, determined to do his best.

"Perfect. Doctor Fraiser, could you please examine the baby before Doctor Jackson takes him home? Just to make sure there are no unexpected surprises," said the General.

"No problem, General."

"Okay people, dismissed."

Later during the day

Doctor Janet Fraiser was examining Andrew, the son of the alternate universe Daniel. Once she was done with the examination, Janet put the sleeping baby in his crib, and put the crib besides her.

Physically, the baby was fine. She was relieved to see that Andrew was free of any Goa'uld surprises. He was a pretty, healthy baby, and he didn't seem to be suffering from any discomfort from being in another reality different from his.

However, Janet had not yet finished what she had to do. She had to run a DNA test to make sure that Andrew was indeed the son of an alternate universe Doctor Jackson.

When her test was finished, Janet compared the DNA strands and there was no doubt left. The baby was a Jackson.

However, Janet had another, more personal, reason to run this test. She hadn't said anything, but she had noticed a similarity between baby Andrew and herself at the same age. Out of curiosity, Janet took the sheet showing her DNA strands and compared it to Andrew's DNA sheet.

She had her answer. Andrew was the son of alternate universe Doctor Janet Frasier.

Still in shock with this news, she didn't hear Daniel arriving. She screamed when she heard someone say hello to her.

"Oh, Don't worry, Doctor Fraiser. It's only me, Daniel!"

"Sorry, Doctor Jackson… I was deep in concentration and didn't hear you arriving," she explained.

"No problem. So, what can you tell us about our little friend here," he said taking Andrew in his arms.

"Well, physically he is fine. There is nothing to worry about. Further, DNA testing confirmed that he is indeed the son of a Daniel Jackson from another reality," she explained, showing Daniel the DNA sheets, except for her own DNA sheet.

"So, can I take him home?" asked Daniel, after taking a look at the sheets.

"Sure," said Janet, as her heart skipped a beat. The baby was her son as well…okay, not HER son, but the son of an alternate universe Janet. She wished she could see Andrew often.

"Doctor Jackson!" she said before the archeologist left with the baby.

"Yes?"

"Do you think I could…visit Andrew from time to time?"

"Well, yes of course," said Daniel, with a smile.

Janet's house
2:00 am

Janet heard the doorbell ringing even though she was sleeping deeply. Wondering who was at the door, she went downstairs to open it.

"Who is it?" she asked before opening the door.

"It's me, Daniel," answered the archeologist.

Janet opened the door, wondering why Daniel had come to her house at this late hour.

"Doctor Jackson, come in. Is something wrong?"

"Sorry to bother you, Doctor Fraiser. But… Andrew has been crying and I haven't been able to make him stop. I fed him, changed his diaper, and everything else I could think of. I was worried that maybe he is sick, and that's why I came," explained Daniel, as the baby continued crying.

"No problem. I will check him," said Janet taking the baby in her arms. Andrew calmed down, as by magic.

"Woaw! How did you do that?" asked Daniel, amazed.

Cassandra, who had awaked upon hearing the doorbell ringing, arrived at this exact moment, and saved Janet from having to answer Daniel's question.

"Daniel? What's going on?" asked Cassie, rubbing her sleepy eyes.

Daniel, who felt guilty from having disturbed their sleep, explained to Cassie what had brought him to the Fraiser house.

Janet started examining Andrew, and was relieved to see that he was fine. She suspected that little Andrew missed his mother. He was calm now because he "felt" his mother, although this Janet wasn't his real mother.

"Well, Andrew is fine. He probably misses his real father," she said to Daniel.

"Yes, I think so," agreed Daniel.

Cassie yawned, and excused herself to go back to sleep. Janet excused herself too, because she wanted to help Cassie back to bed.

When the doctor came back to the living room, she saw that Daniel had fallen asleep on the couch, with baby Andrew in his arms.

Cautiously, so not to wake Daniel, Janet took Andrew and put the baby back in his crib. After doing that, she wondered what to do. The archeologist looked like he needed a good night sleep. And Janet felt like she could help Daniel with the baby to give the archeologist a break. But she could not possibly bring Andrew to her room. It would look weird because the baby was officially under Daniel's care, not hers.

Finding a middle ground between the two options, Janet went to the closet and took a sleeping bag. She also took a blanket and a small mattress. She covered Daniel with the blanket. Once she did that, she prepared a bed for herself with the mattress and the sleeping bag and placed it near the couch and Andrew's crib. That is how they slept that night.

A bit later during the night, Cassie woke up again. She had to go to the bathroom. After she was done, she walked back to her room. But she noticed that her mother wasn't in her room. Worried, Cassie went downstairs. She was relieved when she saw Daniel, Janet and Andrew sleeping in the living room. She stayed there, looking at them for a moment. Somehow, they looked like a family and it seemed right. Cassie wondered if that's how it was in the other reality. She had realized the truth because she had seen the pictures of baby Janet. With a smile, Cassandra went back to her room and continued to sleep.

-----------------------------------

The next morning

Janet woke up, hearing the noise of a baby moving. She was still sleepy, and, for a brief moment, she didn't know why there was a baby in her house. But it all came back to her quickly.

Now completely awake, Janet went to the crib and saw that the baby was awake as well. She was surprised again by how beautiful he was. `Not surprising, with the handsome father he has' she thought. She blushed as she realized what she had just thought. `Janet, you really have to stop this. He is a married man!' she admonished herself.

Brushing all this aside, Janet took Andrew in her arms, and walked towards the kitchen. The baby turned towards her breast, making it clear now that he was hungry.

"Just a moment, sweetie. I know that I look like your mother, but I am not her. So, you will have to be a nice baby and wait for the baby bottle. But don't worry, it will be ready soon."

Moments later, Daniel woke up and was welcomed by the good smell of coffee. He went to the kitchen, and found Janet feeding Andrew. She had also started the coffee machine, and had prepared breakfast.

"Breakfast?" she offered him.

"Thank you. I… I want to apologize for having slept here without being invited," said Daniel, visibly worried that he had offended Janet.

"You were tired, Daniel. There is no reason to apologize. Plus, you're welcome here," she said with a smile.

Daniel smiled back.

He prepared himself a cup of coffee. Janet and Daniel talked as they had breakfast.

Daniel felt good to be here, and realized how much he missed company in the morning.

Of course, he was used to waking up with the rest of SG-1 during missions, but it wasn't the same thing. Usually, the mornings with SG- 1 were rushed since they were on a mission. What Daniel missed were calm mornings, with no reason to rush about, while having a discussion with someone. Just like he had talked with Sha'reh before the Goa'uld had destroyed that happiness. It was in moments like this one that he missed Shar'eh the most. Daniel wondered again if he would ever find her.

`But what if I don't find her?' he asked himself. He hid deep inside him the answer forming in his mind.

Stargate Command

Daniel and Janet brought Andrew to the SGC, because nobody else could baby-sit him. As soon as Daniel arrived at his office with Andrew, he was asked to the briefing room. Before going to the meeting, he went to the infirmary to ask Janet if she could take care of the baby. She happily accepted.

When Daniel arrived in the briefing room, he saw that there were two Tok'ra in there.

"Doctor Jackson, please meet Darec, host to Ruiyac, and also Leri, host to Sham'uc," introduced General Hammond.

The Tok'ra and Daniel greeted each other.

"How is Andrew, Doctor Jackson?" asked General Hammond.

"He is fine. Doctor Fraiser is taking care of him at this moment."

"The Tok'ra have agreed to help us bring assistance to the other universe," announced Sam to Daniel.

"That's great," said the archeologist, definitely happy to hear this news.

They could not possibly stay here without doing something to help the other universe. Of course, the Tok'ra had not the extremely advanced technology that the Nox, the Tollan and the Asgard had. But the Tok'ra had operatives spying on the Goa'uld, and that could be a true asset.

"We still need to complete the details," warned Leri.

"We appreciate your help," said Daniel.

"Let's continue the debriefing," ordered General Hammond.

When the meeting was over, everybody returned to his or her activities. Daniel said to Jack that he was going to the infirmary to look for Andrew before returning to his office. Daniel didn't notice Ruiyac smiling when he heard this.

Shortly after that, two guards accompanied the two Tok'ra to the V.I.P. room. The guards stayed outside the room after leaving the Tok'ra to their activities.

Leri took a look at the room, and found it nice. "I hope that our plan to defeat the Goa'uld will succeed," said Leri, as he sat on a chair in the room.

Suddenly, Ruiyac took his zat gun out of his uniform and fired twice. "The Goa'uld will never be defeated," he said to the now dead Leri.

Ruiyac was no Tok'ra. He was a Goa'uld, spying for Apophis. Contrary to what the Tok'ra and the Tau'ri thought, Apophis was not dead. He was living under cover as Na'onac on the moon Netu.

That moon was under Sokar's control, but Apophis was waiting for the right moment to strike at his enemy. Apophis knew that it was only a matter of time before he claimed his real name back, and return more powerful than ever. Ruiyac was aware that what he had learned today would allow Apophis to do exactly that.

Yes, Apophis would definitely be pleased to hear about Andrew, the son of his enemy, Daniel Jackson. The master Goa'uld would be happy as well to raise Andrew to be his future host. Especially since Amaunet's son had escaped him, thanks to Daniel Jackson. Plus, there was that alternate universe. Ruiyac imagined Apophis teaming with his alternate self. There were million of slaves waiting for them in that other universe. Everything was possible for two Apophis. And Ruiyac would become very powerful in this universe, thanks to Apophis.

Indeed, Ruiyac would be bringing Apophis and himself everything they desired.

Ruiyac placed the dead Leri on the bed, so that it would look as if he were sleeping. This illusion could buy Ruiyac some time. Once he did that, the Goa'uld opened the door. He told the guard that he was going to Doctor Jackson's office while his friend was resting. The guard took a quick look inside the room, and saw Leri sleeping as Ruiyac had mentioned it.

"Very well," he said, and accompanied Ruiyac to Daniel's office.

The archeologist was busy working in his office and Andrew was sleeping in his crib, near Daniel.

Ruiyac arrived to the office and thanked the guard who had accompanied him. The guard left, because the Tok'ra were not prisoners. The guard had no reason to know that Ruiyac was a Goa'uld and not a Tok'ra.

"Hello, Doctor Jackson," said Ruiyac approaching the archeologist.

"Ruiyac, is something wrong?" asked Daniel, concern filling his face.

That is when Ruiyac surprised Daniel by zating him once.

Janet arrived at that exact moment.

The doctor saw that Daniel was unconscious, but Ruiyac pointed his zat gun at her before she could check if the archeologist was fine.

"Take the baby out of his crib, or I'll kill you," ordered the Goa'uld.

Janet had no option but to do as he asked. Once the baby in her arms, she felt the zat gun brushing her back.

"You are coming with me, and don't even think about playing smart with me. If I fire the zat, it will affect the baby as well," said Ruiyac. Janet nodded her head in understanding. They started walking towards the embarkation room.

Pain.

That was the first thing that Daniel felt when he came back to consciousness. He started moving very slowly, his whole body aching. The alarms started ringing.

"Emergency in the embarkation room," a voice announced.

Daniel stood up and took a gun from his drawer. He kept it there for security reasons. However, the Goa'uld attack had been so unexpected that Daniel had not been able to take out his gun.

The last effects of the zat gun were going away. With a determined look, Daniel made his way to the embarkation room hoping that he would arrive on time.

When he got to the embarkation room, Daniel saw that the Goa'uld had taken Janet and Andrew as hostages. The doctor was holding the baby in her arms, and her face showed her fear for the baby.

Daniel noticed that the stargate was activated as well, and that a blue shimmering light shinned in the room. Obviously, Ruiyac had ordered the activation of the stargate and was planning to leave Earth with his hostages.

Jack and Sam were pointing zat guns at the Goa'uld, and Teal'c was pointing his staff weapon at Ruiyac as well. The General was also there, obviously trying to negotiate with the Goa'uld.

"Don't move, or I'll kill the doctor," shouted Ruiyac.

Daniel didn't know what to do. He couldn't allow Ruiyac to leave with Andrew and Janet, but he couldn't shoot the Goa'uld without risking Andrew and Janet's lives.

Suddenly, Daniel and Janet looked at each other, and their eyes locked. The message was clear, and they both understood what they had to do.

Janet, still holding the baby in her arms, lifted her right foot and hit the Goa'uld on his own foot. Ruiyac's boots didn't protect him from Janet's strong movement and her high heels. Pain made Ruiyac release his hold on the doctor. Immediately, Janet crouched protecting Andrew with her whole body. Daniel fired at that moment, killing the Goa'uld.

All this happened in a fraction of a second, but it seemed an eternity for Daniel and Janet.

Andrew started crying, scared by the sound of the shot. Comforting the baby, Janet started singing a lullaby to him. She didn't know it, but she was singing the same lullaby that Andrew's mother usually sang to him. Andrew recognized the song, and he stopped crying. Once again Daniel was amazed at seeing how easily Andrew had calmed down under Janet's care.

The rest of SG-1 approached Ruiyac. Sam examined the Goa'uld vitals as Teal'c and Jack continued pointing their weapons at him, just in case.

"He is dead," confirmed Sam.

Relieved, Jack and Teal'c put their weapons away.

The briefing room

"You people just have the best security in the universe!" said Jack with sarcasm, but his sarcasm hid his anger.

"In the name of all the Tok'ra, I want to say that we're really sorry. We didn't know about Ruiyac. You have to believe us," said Sham'uc.

"You people put a baby in danger!" shouted Jack, full of anger now.

"Colonel," said General Hammond, trying to control Jack.

"I am sorry, General Hammond. It is just that I can't believe this!" exclaimed Jack.

"Well, at least Andrew is fine," said Daniel.

"We still don't know what Ruiyac wanted. Why take Andrew?" asked Sam.

"Maybe he wanted him to be his future host?" suggested Sham'uc.

"It still doesn't explain why Andrew and not some other baby?"

"Most likely, he wanted to present the baby to a Goa'uld master," said Teal'c.

"And there are a number of Goa'uld masters who would be pleased to have him, given his link to us," agreed Daniel.

"Don't forget that the Goa'uld still resent us from managing to include Earth in the Protected Planet's treaty," agreed Sam, thinking about those events which were still fresh in everybody's mind.

There was a heavy silence in the room as everyone considered the possibilities. Who was the mysterious Goa'uld master Ruiyac had been working for? They had no way of knowing that right now.

"We are leaving as soon as possible," announced the Tok'ra. "We have to determine what Ruiyac may have told the Goa'uld."

"You do that," said Jack.

"Unfortunately, that means that we won't be able to help you in bringing assistance to Andrew's universe," said Sham'uc.

"We understand that. We will try to find another way," said General Hammond.

Moments later, Sam, Janet and Daniel were looking through the window allowing them to see the embarkation room downstairs. Daniel was holding baby Andrew in his arms.

Down in the embarkation room, were General Hammond, Jack and Teal'c. They accompanied Sham'uc, who was about to leave Earth.

"The Tok'ra council will do their best to ensure that this will not happen again," he declared.

"We would appreciate," said Jack. He was still angry that the Tok'ra had not discovered Ruiyac before bringing him to Earth.

Sham'uc bent his head in a salute, and then walked up the ramp leading to the stargate.

Soon, the Tok'ra walked through the gate, and he was gone.

Up in the control room, Daniel was disappointed to know that the Tok'ra were not longer an option for helping Andrew's universe. He couldn't see another option for helping the other universe besides the Tok'ra. He was aware that the Tollan, the Nox and the Asgard would most probably not be able to help them, for different reasons. And the SGC alone did not have the resources to help Andrew's universe. The situation seemed definitely hopeless.

As much as Daniel was starting to enjoy being a father, he realized that he wasn't Andrew's real father. And Daniel knew that the other Doctor Jackson would certainly want Andrew back. However, Andrew could not return to his universe until it was free of the Goa'uld attack.

Daniel sincerely hoped that there was a way of defeating the Goa'uld there. The problem was going to be finding it.
