"In the garden, I was playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart
You, you were acting like it was the end of the world."
-- "Until The End Of The World", U2
Janet wondered if everything had been a dream. She had been sure that
Jack's birthday party had been only three days ago. She had been sure
that, at that party, she and Daniel had taken a walk in Jack's backyard,
away from the house and the crush of people.
And she had been sure that Daniel had murmured endearments and stroked her
hair and kissed her softly.
However, since then, his demeanor towards her hadn't changed in the
slightest. There were no shy smiles or secretive glances. Just the same
Daniel he had always been.
That night had been the most beautiful, romantic thing that Janet could
remember happening to her. Yet now it was like it had never happened.
She was worried.
So maybe she hadn't had that much romantic experience, despite five years
of marriage. She was still certain there should have been something to
show for that lovely, starlit half-hour.
She caught him in the commissary, drinking from his ever-present coffee
mug and reading an archaeological magazine. Janet grabbed a coffee of her
own and went to sit across from him.
He looked up as she sat. "Hi," he said, sounding surprised but friendly.
"Hello. How are you?" Janet asked, wondering if he noticed how stiff she
sounded.
"I'm okay. You?"
"I'm, um, I'm just wondering what happened with us. At Jack's party," she
said slowly.
"What happened when?" Daniel put down his magazine and looked into her
eyes.
"In the garden. You know. We took a walk out there…" Janet was fairly sure
she wasn't blushing, but not as sure as she would have liked to have been.
"Huh? Oh, right. Janet, you know as well as I do that was just a couple of
friends having some fun." He smiled at her, the warm look in his eyes
contrasting with the easy, careless cruelty of his words. He looked at his
watch. "Damnit, I have to be at a briefing. I'll see you later, Janet. Say
hi to Cassie for me." Daniel gave her one last grin, then stood up and
left.
Janet took another sip of coffee, holding the mug with both hands to keep
herself from pressing one of them against her heart.
She hurt.
