SUMMARY: The lives of Daniel and Janet of the alternate universe change forever.
"Time passes in moments ... moments which, rushing past, define the path of a life just as surely as they lead towards its end. How rarely do we stop to examine that path, to see the reasons why all things happen, to consider whether the path we take in life is our own making or simply one into which we drift with eyes closed. But what if we could stop, pause to take stock of each precious moment before it passes? Might we then see the endless forks in the road that have shaped a life? And, seeing those choices, choose another path?"

The infirmary
It was an unusually calm day at the infirmary. Normally, there were many patients, but today there were none, and there were no nurses busily running around. But the infirmary was not totally empty. Doctor Janet Frasier was examining Doctor Daniel Jackson, who had just returned from a mission to Abydos and to Kheb. Daniel was sitting on the examination table and Janet was standing up besides him. Janet was satisfied knowing that, physically, there was nothing wrong with Daniel after that mission. However, she was worried about his state of mind. The archeologist seemed lost in his thoughts, his eyes not really focusing. Since he returned from the mission, he seemed unaffected by what was going on around him. It was as if nothing existed for him anymore.
"Are you all right? You just... you seem a little out of it, Daniel," asked Janet, her face full of worry.
"Yes, I am fine," answered Daniel, but Janet wasn't convinced. She could tell that he was suffering a lot. She sympathized with him because she knew the reason for his pain.
"Look, I know these last days have been really hard for you. So, if you need someone to talk to... well, I just want to let you know that I am here."
"Thanks," said Daniel. He smiled, but it was a smile without joy. Suddenly, all the emotion he had kept inside came out in an explosion of feelings. "Yes, everything is all right," he said sarcastically. He continued speaking, angrily. "I went to Abydos and find out that Sha'reh was pregnant with Apophis' son. The Goa'uld inside her was sleeping, waiting for Sha'reh to give birth before taking control of her again. However, Sha'reh died giving birth to her son. But that's not all. Before Shar'eh died, Amaunet asked me to bring the baby to Kheb. She said that he would be protected there. I went with SG-1 to Kheb, where we found a Jaffa army that almost killed all of us. A spirit made of light took Sha'reh's baby away. But no, everything is real fine."
The memories of all this were too much for Daniel, and he started crying out his pain.
Janet held him in her arms, trying to give him some needed comfort. She was surprised by his sudden outburst, but she also understood it was a necessary healing process. However, she had not really realized the depth of his suffering until now. "I've lost her, I've lost her and her baby," Daniel repeated over and over. He hid his face on Janet's shoulder. "I am sorry," he said after a moment, feeling a bit silly.
"There is no reason to be sorry, Daniel," she replied. However, they had not moved. Janet was still holding Daniel in her arms and neither had attempted to move away. Suddenly, their eyes locked and time seemed to stand still. Acting by an unknown impulse he could not explain, Daniel approached his face to hers, and kissed her. Janet's surprise grew even more when she found herself answering his kiss back. It was so unexpected, yet it was very real. Their conscious minds shut down, as they continued kissing more and more passionately. Janet felt Daniel's hand caress her back and she caressed his hair. Still kissing, they started moving towards Janet's office. Once there, Daniel locked the door, and started kissing Janet's neck while his fingers began to unbutton her shirt. Janet's hand was busy caressing Daniel's back, as she responded to his touch.
There was nothing else for them in the world, except the feelings
overtaking them.
Later...
Janet opened her eyes and felt a warm hand on her shoulder. "Oh, my God," she said as the reality of what had happened struck her. It wasn't as if she had not wanted this to happen. As a matter of fact, she had secretly dreamed about it for a long time. But she had not wished it to happen like this, under these circumstances. It made her feel awful.
`Stupid! Why did you have to do that? You just threw everything away!' she scolded herself mentally, moving away from Daniel. Her movement brought Daniel back to reality. It was now him who realized what had happened. He was in shock. What had he done? How had he dared do this to Janet and to Shar'eh, especially when Shar'eh had just died? Very uncomfortable and not knowing what else to do, Daniel left after he was decent enough to do so.
Daniel's office
Two weeks later
A knock on the door startled Daniel. He put his "rocks" aside, and opened the door to find Jack. "Can I come in?" asked the colonel, but he had already stepped in.
"Jack, is something wrong?"
The colonel closed the door. He didn't want this conversation to fall in wrong ears. "Nothing except that Doctor Frasier and you have been avoiding each other," said Jack, going straight to business.
"We are not," replied Daniel.
"Are too."
"Are not."
"Are too"
"Are not."
"Fine, Daniel! We came back from a mission and you ask for Doctor Warner to examine you instead of Doctor Frasier. What you did not know is that she had taken the day off. So, Doctor Frasier was conveniently absent to examine SG-1," replied Jack telling Daniel what he had noticed.
The archaeologist tried to deny again that he was trying to avoid Janet, but Jack knew Daniel too well to be deceived. "You can lie to me. But don't lie to yourself about this thing, whatever this is," said Jack.
Daniel could not take the guilt in his heart anymore and decided to confess everything to his friend. "We had sex. I betrayed Sha'reh's memory and took advantage of Janet! That's what happened!"
Jack was speechless. How come Daniel always found a way to be in trouble? There was only one thing Jack could say after this news. "Talk to her about it... I think it is the best thing to do," said Jack, leaving the room.
Janet's house
Janet was about to make some cookies for her daughter Cassandra when the doorbell rang. Telling herself that the cookies would have to wait, she went to open the door.
It was Sam.
"Hey, Sam! Come in," she said, trying to sound cheerful but failing totally. It wasn't that she was annoyed about Sam's visit. It was just that Janet didn't feel well today.
"Thanks, Janet," said Sam, entering into her friends' house.
Sam and Janet went to the living room and sat down.
"Is Cassie home?" asked Sam.
"No. Cassie has a rehearsal for her show at school. She will not come home until later," answered Janet.
"Good, because I think we need to talk."
"About?" asked Janet, already knowing what was going on.
"Daniel," replied Sam.
She told her friend that she had noticed that Daniel and Janet had been avoiding each other.
"I don't know what happened, Janet. But, as a friend, I can say that this is affecting both of you," she concluded.
Janet closed her eyes, knowing that she needed to tell someone. She couldn't keep this inside her anymore, and Sam was her best friend. Janet could definitely trust her.
"Daniel and I had sex," she revealed, her voice almost a whisper.
"Oh, God!" said Sam. She had expected anything but this.Although it certainly explained why Daniel and Janet had been avoiding each other.
"It happened after the mission to Kheb," she said. "I don't know what came over me, it just happened. Oh! Sam! What have I done? Daniel just needed a friend and I just took advantage of his tragedy and he knows it, Sam! I feel awful about it!" Janet's voice started breaking with emotion coming to her.
Sam looked at Janet with sympathy.
"I take it you two haven't talked about it... I mean, after it happened?" asked Sam.
"How could we? I cannot face him anymore. He must think the worst things about me now ." Janet's eyes were full with tears now.
"But how can you know how he feels about it if you two haven't talked
about it?" asked Sam, doing her best to help.
"I can't talk to him, certainly not after what I found out today ," said Janet categorically.
Sam's eyes widened, a bad feeling coming to her. "Janet, you're not telling me that..."
"Yes, I am pregnant with Daniel's child."
Daniel's apartment
Next day...
Daniel had not slept properly since he had been thinking a lot about the situation. He realized that Jack was right. He had to talk to Janet about what had happened.
That day in the infirmary, he had just wanted some comfort from Janet, but he had acted foolishly. In a moment, he had managed to fail both Shar'eh and Janet.
But now, he didn't want to fail Janet any longer by leaving this situation unresolved. They had to talk, even if Janet was most probably feeling betrayed by him.
His decision made, Daniel went to Janet's house.
The archeologist parked his car in front of Janet's house when he got there. He rang the doorbell, but nobody opened the door. He rang again, and there was still no answer.
"She doesn't want to talk to me. I don't blame her, after what I did," he thought, looking miserably.
He didn't know what to do. With hope, he wondered if maybe she just had not heard the doorbell. Daniel walked to a window and took a look inside. The house was empty and Janet was gone!
Panicking, Daniel rushed to the SGC. He knocked on the door of General Hammond's office. He was so troubled by Janet's disappearance that he entered the office without really waiting for the invitation to come in.
"Sir, do you know where Janet, I mean Doctor Frasier, is? Her house seems empty," he said, concern filling his face.
"I found this when I arrived to my office this morning," explained the General, his voice having a sad tone to it. He showed a paper to Daniel. "It is Doctor Frasier's resignation," explained the General.
"It can't be!" said Daniel, unbelieving that she could just go away like this.
Later on, Daniel asked Jack and Sam if they knew where Janet was. They were surprised to hear the news of Janet's disappearance and had no idea of her whereabouts. Sam decided to keep Janet's pregnancy secret, because she didn't want to tell anyone before Janet could announce the news herself.
Daniel couldn't believe this was happening! Shar'eh had disappeared just as unexpectedly, on that horrible day when Apophis had attacked Abydos. Shar'eh had returned to Daniel, but fate had taken her again from him. This time forever.
Daniel couldn't bear the thought that he may never see Janet as well. No, he couldn't lose her just because of what had happened that day in the infirmary, that unexpected twist of fate which had changed their lives forever. As he had done it with Shar'eh, Daniel promised himself that, one day, he would find Janet.
