Here goes:
DAY 1
I can't believe this. This trip has just gone from bad to worse. And it is
all Daniel's fault, too. He wanted to stay in Turkey and make sure Stephen
was ok, so I stayed as well; as a doctor I could explain to him what his
friend's condition was, and so on. So, Sam flew back to the States without
us two days ago and Daniel and I are stuck here on this Gods-forsaken island
in the middle of the Caribbean... What did I do to deserve this? Huh? Huh?
Answer me!
Ok, I'm calm, I'm collected. I'm thirsty. Damn, am I thirsty. It's hot
here. At least Daniel still has his hat, mine disapeared when we
crashed. He offered it to me, but he burns faster then I do, so I'm sitting
here under a tree with a shirt tied around my head.
I suppose you are going to want to know why I am sitting here, on an island,
with a shirt tied around my head, talking to myself, aren't you? I would,
in your shoes. Ok, where was I in my ranting? Oh yeah, the Caribbean. So,
since Daniel and I didn't leave with Sam, we didn't get to take a military
transport all the way back home. We took a transport to Turkey, then we had
to fly out of Turkey's commercial airport in Ankara and
transfer planes in Bermuda. We were going to take a commuter plane from
Bermuda to Tallahassee, then fly from there to Colorado, but no... The
plane we got on had one pilot and only us as passengers. Of course, the
plane goes down just off a deserted island and the pilot is dead. Daniel
and I are strandedhere. We managed to rescue some of our suitcases, but the
radio was destroyed, so the only way we are getting off this island is if
someone comes looking for us and the transponder is still working.
DAY 2
Something has gone right today. I woke up this morning to find a huge
spider on my stomach. It wasn't poisonous(don't ask me how I know, I just
knew. Call it womans intuition), but it sent Daniel running at me
with a stick. If it weren't for the fact that he nearly broke one of my
ribs, I would have found his attempt at protecting me kinda cute. What went
right, though, was we found some fresh water. About a half a mile into the
island is a small (very small, a little bigger then pond size) lake. It has
a very minute salt content, with no fish in there, just some water plants to
keep the water oxygenated. I also found some edible fruit, so we will not
starve to death.
DAY 3
I don't remember packing this, but today I found one of my bathing suits in
my suitcase. I swear, I didn't put it in there. Maybe Cassy did before we
left, but until now I would not have had a reason to wear it. Maybe I'll
put it to good use tomorrow. Have to do something else besides watch Daniel
slap at nonexistent mosquitoes (ok, that was my fault... I told him there
were thousands of mosquitoes on the island to get back at him for the spider
thing, and ever since, he's been slapping himself silly every few minutes).
There can't be any mosquitoes here though, there are no birds or mammals for
them to feed off of. Come to think of it, the only insects I've seen here
were a couple beetles, that spider, and a worm (yeah, I know, not an insect.
So sue me, I hated biology in school).
It's me again. Decided to go swimming after all. Daniel joined me after a
few minutes. He made me swear not to laugh at him and I tried, I really
did. He didn't have a swim suit with him and all he could find to wear as a
pair of yellow-polka-dotted black boxer shorts. Cotton boxer shorts. He
looked so embarrassed when he stood up in the water after submerging himself
that I dove under water and laughed. Almost choked too, but the tears from
laughing mingled with the water so I don't think he noticed anything.
DAY 4
It was cold last night. Daniel and I ended sleeping next to each other to
keep warm. We've been using our BDU jackets as blankets, last night we
added on of my skirts (torn down one seam) and a sweatshirt. I think it was
the pilot's. I woke up this morning to find Daniel wrapped around me, his
face pressed against my spine. His left leg was wrapped around me as well.
It felt nice, actually. I haven't slept with someone (not even in the
sexual way) since my divorce, unless you count Cassy's nightmares where she
crawls into my bed for the night. I think I like it.
It rained this afternoon. We huddled together under a couple big leaves
that fell from the trees to keep ourselves and our "blankets" dry as much as
possible. We barely fit. As it was, I was sitting between his legs leaning
back against him with his legs wrapped around mine. I wonder if mother
nature is trying to tell me something?
DAY 5
It rained today, too. We haven't moved from under the tree except to go to
the bathroom or run and grab some food from out stash ten feet away. I
think I'm going to be sick of plantains when we get off this island. The
rain wasn't as bad as yesterday, though. We could hear ourselves talk, so
we did. About our favorite food (steak for me, chicken for him), drinks
(margaritas and strawberry daiquiris for me, Dr. Pepper and white wine for
him). At one point we even talked a little about our marriages. He cried
after he told me about his year with Sha'ure, and I found myself crying
along with him as I turned around in his arms to hold him. I told him in
minute detail about my husband, and what he did to me that caused me to
leave him. That was hard. I've only told a few people about my husband's
abuse, both physical and emotional. Sam is the only other one in the SGC
who knows, and only because one night we both got really drunk and spilt our
sob stories to each other. I know more about Jonas than even the Colonel, I
think. I'm pretty sure she either told him or he found out.
It was an emotional afternoon, to say the least. When the rain finally did
stop in early evening, we didn't move. I think if we stay here much longer
we are going fall asleep in each others arms. I don't think I have a
problem with that.
DAY 6
The rain filled up our puddle of water to pretty decent size. There was
enough for us to rinse the grime off ourselves (we used a thermos to get the
water and stood a ways away from the water to keep it as clean as possible)
as well as drink and use to brush our teeth for the next three weeks, at
least. We played around in the water again, and I didn't laugh at him
anymore. He looks good with wet cotton stuck to his... skin. Damn good.
We had a water fight, and played tag, and when we were done, we collapsed
together on the beach.
DAY 7
I think our island adventure is almost over. We were lying on the beach
after a lunch of, you guessed it, plantains (come to think of it... how did
there get to be plantains this far from the Amazon?) when we heard a plane.
We saw it a few minutes later, it was a Coast Guard Search and Rescue plane.
We jumped up and waved at it, and it circled a couple times, then flew away.
I'm pretty sure they saw us.
DAY 8
They saw us. A Coast Guard vessel arrived about twenty minutes ago. We
packed our few surviving belongings (most had disappeared during the storm)
and they helped us aboard. We're about fifty miles from the Florida Keys,
according to the captain. We should be on the mainland by tomorrow morning
at the latest. The ships Corpsman looked us over, but we're going to go to
the hospital anyway. Both of us are pretty dark now, Daniel more burnt then
I am, I'm just very tan.
They gave us separate quarters. I don't know why, but that surprised me.
I've gotten used to being in Daniel's arms over the past week. I miss it. I
wonder if this... thing... will turn into anything when we get back to the
Springs. I think I would like that.
DAY 9
The Air Force has put us up in the Airport Holiday Inn for the night, before
we fly out tomorrow. The people at the hospital gave us some lotion for the
burns and medications to take if we feel sick. We were also told to get
checked out once we returned to Colorado to make sure there aren't any
latent viruses or parasites they might not have picked up. I can do that.
The Air Force has wasted their money. They reserved two rooms for us and we
are using only one. I think this answers my question from yesterday.
