She walked contemplatively down the beach, the waves crashing on the shore.
Her shoulder length auburn hair whipped around her face, alternately
covering and exposing her sharp features. The long flower patterned dress
she wore blew back in the breeze like a ship sail. She brushed her bangs out
of her eyes with a delicate hand. The sunset was beautiful. The sounds of
the waves were music to her ears. But nothing could remove her mind from the
attack.
From behind her, a tall, blonde Air Force officer jogged up. He was dressed
in standard, camouflage, off-world gear; complete with zat gun and SGC
emblem on the shoulder of his sleeve. The team designation was SG-21,
Colonial Investigation. His rank...Major.
"Angie?", he called, "Angie!" She turned to face him. As he approached, his
run slowed to a joyful ambling.
"Benny!", she exclaimed. He walked up to her and stopped inches away.
"Hey there!", he greeted softly, taking her into her arms and giving her an
inviting kiss on the lips.
"Hey yourself!", answered she, slight sadness in her soft and musical voice,
"Where have you been?"
"I’m sorry, baby. I was delayed a bit on P6X-875. We were about to dial back
home when Landers and his team barged their way ahead of us and dialed home
first, from P5X-391. We got the busy signal and had to wait till they were
finished."
"I see.", she said unenthusiastically.
"Look.", he said, "You’ve been at this dig for two weeks and you need a
break. Dial-out is in twenty minutes, and I’m thinking we should stop by
Victoria’s for dinner when we get back. How about it?"
"I‘d like that.", she responded. Her voice carried a solemn flatness. "I
could use a day or two off this rock."
Her gaze shifted to the sand at their feet. He noticed this.
"Whatcha’ thinkin’ about?", he asked. She shook her head and stifled a short
breath.
"Mom and Dad.", she whispered.
"Oh. It’s the 17th again, isn‘t it? That‘s what you‘re doing here on the
beach, away from the team."
"Ten years ago today, Benny...."
"December 17th, I forgot."
"I keep remembering. The inscriptions, the virus. Mom and Dad tried to help
those people. That’s when...when..." Her voice quivered and tears ran down
her freckled cheeks.
"Ten years and I still can’t think about it without crying. I mean...I
should have done something! I could have..." She sniffled, he wiped away her
tears.
"Shush, Angie.", he consoled, hugging her warmly. "There was nothing you
could have done. You were ambushed. The Goa’uld attacked the camp and ..." .
"And Major Robinson dragged me through the Gate kicking and screaming! I was
so ANGRY at him for that!", she growled, her voice simmering with still
burning anger, "I couldn’t even save Mom or Dad! I mean, when
they...died...in the infirmary. I felt so helpless. That was the worst
birthday an 18 year old could ever get."
"I know...I was there." Several seconds of silence passed by.
"I visited their graves yesterday, near our home, on P4X-218?"
"Yeah?"
"I’m thinking of selling the place to Mom's sister, Jenni. She wants it so
badly and I want to move back to Earth to be with you." Benny smiled.
"Sounds like a good idea, baby.", he said gently, kissing her forehead. "Now
let’s...", his voice was cut off by a voice piping in from his radio.
"Doctor Jackson? Major O’Neill?", it called. Benny reached down and pressed
the talk button, spoke into the mike.
"O’Neill here, go ahead Kashiwa, what is it?"
"Is Doctor Jackson with you sir?"
"Yes she is. What’s up Captain?"
"Dial out in five minutes instead of fifteen." Benjamin’s voice grew
concerned.
"What happened?"
"Russell broke his leg, sir; and we need to get him back to the Infirmary."
"On our way.", he said. He took her arm in his and the two started walking
casually, back to the Gate. "Oh, yeah. I’m due at the Carter Institute on
Wednesday to give a lecture. Can’t make the play, sorry."
"Oh, okay. Maybe next time, huh? By the way, how’s it feel to have an
astrophysics institute named after your own mother?"
"Same as you hearing about YOUR mom’s medical pioneering. You know, back in
Anat-Phys class in High School?"
"Ugh, don’t remind me.", she said, rolling her eyes. "Blah blah
Frasier-Jackson this, and blah blah Frasier-Jackson that! I got sick of it
SO quickly." Benny chuckled, then reached into his coat pocket. He produced
a small box covered in dark purple velvet.
"By the way," he said, turning to face her, "Happy Birthday." He placed the
box into her hand and she opened it. Inside was a sparkling diamond ring,
wreathed with rubies and emeralds. Angie’s hand went to her mouth.
"Oh, Benjamin Steven O‘Neill!", she gasped, "Is this...?" Benny took her
free hand and dropped to one knee. He nodded, a wide smile creeping upon his
face. He then gathered his courage and swallowed hard.
"Well, Angela Tabitha Jackson? Will you?"
"Oh yes!", she replied hurriedly, "I will, I will, I will!" He stood up and
they embraced in a passionate kiss. After a few tender moments, the kiss
ended.
"Well, we...uh...had better get back before they leave us behind", she said.
"You’re right.", he said, brushing her hair out of her face, "Let’s go."
He placed the small box back into his coat pocket (Angela had no pockets on
her dress) and they resumed their walk to the Gate. The waves continued to
crash against the shore.
