Stranded 13.5: Nunc Scio Quit Sit Amor
by Bryn
It was the sun in its perpetual western trek that woke Daniel. Spying through the window, between the slightly parted curtains, it skittered across his face, tickling his sleepy brain out of unconsciousness. He moaned softly and rolled over, burying his head in an attempt to escape the irritating brightness.
“You’re going to have to get up sometime.”
Daniel still refused to open his eyes, but couldn’t help the smiled that played across his lips. Reaching out blindly, he found the source of voice and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her close. “No.”
“No?” Janet laughed and snuggled closer, molding her body to his.
“No. I’m not getting up. I *refuse* to get up. I want to lay right here, next to you, forever.”
“I’m not arguing the brilliance of that plan, but I do see some substantial flaws in it.”
“What flaws could there be in my plan?” he asked.
“Two come to mind. One being the teenager, who, at any minute, will start yelling for me to find something or other despite the fact she’s fully capable of locating it herself, and the other being the baby in here who’s already starting to wreak havoc on my bladder.”
That just made Daniel grin even wider. Relenting, he opened his eyes. After locating her stomach, he gently pushed aside her shirt and leaned down to give it a kiss. “Good morning, little baby.”
“Are you always going to be like this?” Janet asked, attempting, but failing, to look serious. She couldn’t help it; he just looked so adorable making funny faces at her belly button.
“Like what?” he asked innocently.
“Talking to my stomach.”
Daniel turned his head to look her straight in the eye, and smiled. “Yes.” He returned to lavishing her stomach with kisses.
“This is going to be a long six months,” Janet murmured. She lay back against the pillows, defeated, as the archeologist started a full-on conversation. Closing her eyes, she drifted off for a few minutes in peaceful bliss.
“Janet?”
She looked down to find his cheek resting on her belly, but his gaze focused intently on her face. “Yeah?”
“Marry me.”
Her eyebrows raised just slightly. “I thought you said we were.”
“For all intents and purposes, we are. But let’s not start the rest of our lives half-heartedly. Let’s do it right. We can have a wedding in front of our friends and family, here on our own planet. We can even take pictures to commemorate the occasion, just like *normal* people.” He twisted around so his face was on the same level as hers and he trailed a fingertip down her face. “What do you say?”
She took a second to just look at him, appreciating the moment. “Yes.” Janet smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Mom!”
Daniel pulled back and looked at Janet oddly. “How did you know that would happen?”
“She’s a teenager,” Janet said, by way of explanation.
Daniel made a face. “Does this mean we have to get up now?”
“I have to help her get ready for school, but you can stay here if you want.”
“What’s the fun of that if you’re not here?”
“Then get up with me. I’ll make you coffee…” She knew the bribery would work. With a triumphant grin she leaned over and kissed him one last time before rolling out of bed and pulling on her robe.
Cassie looked up as her mom came downstairs. She looked ruffled and not quite awake, but already had a goofy grin on her face. “You look happy this morning,” Cassie commented.
“What’s wrong with that?” Janet asked, cheerily.
“You’re not a morning person. You’re never happy in the morning.” Cassie eyed Janet suspiciously, then thought of something. “This wouldn’t have anything to do with Daniel spending the night, would it?”
Janet decided playing dumb would be the best tactic, despite knowing full well what her daughter was referring to. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Just then Daniel walked into the kitchen, clad only in pajama bottoms and a very sleepy expression. He halted abruptly as he noticed Cassie sitting at the counter, grinning at him, not-so-innocently. “Uh...Hi, Cassie. I was… um… that is, we… uh…”
“Had a nice night?” Cassie supplied, causing Daniel to turn bright red.
“Cassie!” Janet scolded, though she was having a hard time not laughing at poor Daniel. He really wasn’t used to teenage girls, though that was something he’d have to get over real fast. Taking pity on him, Janet changed the subject. “Actually, there is a reason I’m in a good mood, Cass.”
Daniel’s embarrassment instantly melted away, replaced by a large smile. Stepping closer to Janet, he slipped his arms around her waist as they both turned to face the teenager. This time it was Daniel’s turn to grin at Cassie.
“Well, I already know you’re pregnant…” Cassie started.
“We’re getting married,” Daniel declared proudly.
Cassie blinked. “I thought you said you were already.”
Daniel, pouting at the anticlimax of the moment, scowled. “Why does everyone keep saying that?”
“He means a real wedding.” Janet giggled. “To make it official.”
“And take pictures,” Daniel added.
“Cool. When? And can I be a bridesmaid?” Cassie asked.
Janet and Daniel exchanged a look. They hadn’t exactly gotten to the ‘when’ part. Leave it to the teenager to find the holes in their plan.
“Uh… that’s a good question…. Janet?”
“Of course you can be a bridesmaid, Cass,” Janet replied. “Now go get ready for school.”
“I am ready,” Cassie informed her, demonstrating the fact that she was already dressed. “When?”
“Well, we hadn’t actually gotten that far…”
“You might want to think about that… especially if you don’t want to be barefoot and pregnant for your wedding.”
“Cassie!” Janet sent the girl a warning glare, to which she just smiled sweetly in reply. Janet glanced at the clock and noticed the time. “We’ll get dressed while you pack up your bag, then we’ll drive you to school,” she instructed, “and we’ll finish this discussion later.”
* * *
The discussion turned out to be short and sweet, taking less than the time it took them to get dressed. They both agreed all they wanted was a simple wedding, just their friends and family, and that they didn’t want to wait.
“How about tomorrow?” Daniel asked.
Janet gave him a dismissive look. “Even with a small wedding I need a *little* more time to plan than that.” Daniel’s face fell, just minutely, but enough for Janet to notice. She smiled at his exuberance, how could it not make her happy that he wanted to marry her right then and there? “Give me a week. I at least need to find a dress that’s semi-appropriate.”
Daniel’s smile returned. “A week. I can handle that. How about we head to the base today and tell everyone the good news?”
“Sure.” Janet nodded absently. “We can go after you take Cassie to school.”
“Me? I thought we both were going to take her.”
“Change of plans: you drive her to school, I’ll go throw up.”
* * *
Daniel and Janet didn’t actually reach the SGC until early afternoon, due to an expected and very unwelcome bout of morning sickness that lasted *all* morning. Needless to say, Janet was not very pleased. In fact, a more accurate assessment would be: tired, cranky, and hormonal. Fortunately, Daniel was so blissfully happy, he was quite oblivious to Janet’s foul mood. Unfortunately, this tended to tick off Janet more.
The first big announcement they decided to make was about their engagement. As it turned out, breaking that news to everyone did take quite a bit of time, explanation and repetition. In all honesty, though, General Hammond, Sam and presumably even Teal’c had seen it coming; it was Jack who fell out of his chair and hit the ground with a loud thump, shortly followed by: “MARRIED?” A round of congratulations were exchanged as they waited for Jack to recover from the initial shock and eventually demand they backtrack a bit and catch him up on all those memos he’d obviously missed.
Finally, a good half hour later, Daniel was able to pacify his friend with, “Jack, if we’d been able to send you a memo on this, I promise you we would have.”
Then came time to break the *other* news. “PREGNANT?” Jack nearly fell off his chair, again. Then, catching on a little, he bewilderedly looked around at the others, who were smiling away, not surprised at all. “Wait a minute, you guys knew about this?”
Janet decided it was her duty as a doctor to try to calm Jack down. “Colonel, the General was informed by Dr. Warner after my post mission exam. As for Major Carter…” Janet shrugged. “She’s my best friend.”
Jack scowled. “What about Teal’c?”
“It was not difficult to predict that such a situation would arise under the circumstances, O’Neill,” Teal’c stated, in normal stoic Teal’c fashion. “Also, it is plainly obvious that Dr. Fraiser is in fact glowing.”
Janet blushed a bit, but smiled up at the big Jaffa. “Thank you, Teal’c.”
Teal’c nodded in return and the others added their agreement, even Jack, after a bit of nudging from Sam. Just as they were getting up to leave though, Jack turned to Teal’c. “Glowing?” he asked.
“Is that not the correct term?”
“Yes, it is, Teal’c,” Daniel replied, quite amused.
“Don’t tell me they use ‘glowing’ on Chulak.”
“They do not.”
“Then where did you pick that up?” Jack persisted.
“Daytime television, O’Neill.”
