There are, in life, what we call defining moments. We have many that steer us down our paths. Sometimes
they are choices we make, like what to study in college and sometimes it is merely fate. A child comes into
your life unexpectedly or your beloved spouse dies suddenly.
One of these becomes a challenging, although joyous, event while the other leaves you devastated. But they
have one thing in common – they change your life drastically and you never see it the same way again.
And then there is that defining moment when you realize, for the first time, that the person standing
before you is the one who makes your heart beat faster, your palms sweat and even after knowing them
for years, all the sudden you can’t string two words together when they walk into the room…
Daniel scooped up the stack of books piled high on his desk. He looked at the table to his left, it was full
of books. Then he looked at the chair in the corner – full. He sighed then decided on the table to his
left. Struggling to move the already tall pile, he jumped at the sound of her voice – Dr. Janet Fraiser.
“Hey.”
A simple hello sent every book his hand flying across the room. Daniel bent down to pick up one of the
books, realized it was hopeless, dropped it back to the floor then smiled at Janet.
“Hey” he responded.
“Looks like you’re having a rough morning…maybe this will help.” She held out a steaming mug of coffee.
Daniel smiled appreciatively as he accepted the welcome brew.
“Thanks.” Why was his heart racing?
Janet moved into his office, taking in its contents and smiling to herself. Daniel watched her move as he
took a sip of his coffee.
She picked up a book off his desk, reading the unfamiliar title then turned to face Daniel.
“I just wanted to say thanks.”
“Wow.” He responded, “This is great coffee…thanks for what?” he asked, taking another sip.
Janet smiled at the compliment. All the sudden she felt like a school girl who finally got the nerve to
talk to the boy. But this was Daniel…She shook her head slightly with the thought and looked everywhere but at him.
“Oh, it’s my special blend…thanks for just being there…you know…while I had to deal with Cassie…”
Now she looked up at Daniel, emphasising her next words “…it meant a lot to me.”
They locked eyes and for a split second, it all made sense. Why he seemed to drop by the infirmary for no
reason. Why she started walking by his office whenever she could. Why he reached out to her that day when she
needed him and why now he was standing there drinking the best coffee he ever tasted. He had to wonder if it
really was just the blend.
He hesitantly took a step closer to her, not breaking the connection.
“If this coffee is the thanks…well…you can always count on me” he smiled.
“I know I can always count on you” her voice catching, she smiled hoping not to reveal the confusing feelings
overwhelming her.
Daniel rubbed his sweaty palm absently on his pant leg, taking another sip of the coffee.
“There’s more where that came from.” She offered.
“What?” he almost spat. Was her voice that sultry a few moments ago?
“More coffee…” she leaned in “…it’s my little secret. Come by my office any time.”
“I will”. I definitely will, he thought.
“No one else knows about the coffee.”
“Then it will be OUR little secret,” he smiled. She returned the smile then quickly walked out of the
room. Daniel stared at the doorway briefly before sitting down to his desk to begin the translation. He
set the mug of coffee down, making a mental note to get some more coffee very soon, and began to work. It
was only after a few moments that he realized the text he was supposed to be translating was actually in English.
