Brave words, for such a fearful heart. So Janet thought to herself.
How could she have said what she said? How had those words escaped her
lips? A part of her felt that way, of course, but who had given that part
control of her mouth?
She had lost him. No, she corrected herself as she sat limply in her car.
She had never had him, she told herself sternly. All she had ever had was
a fantasy and some hope.
Both were gone now.
He had feelings for her. She was as sure of that as she was of her own
feelings for him. However, for whatever reason, he had shut those emotions
off. He wanted her, but did nothing when she offered herself.
Janet tried to start the car, but instead rested her head on the steering
wheel and let the tears come. She couldn't drive in this condition. Yet
she needed to go home, so she could curl up in bed with a carton of ice
cream.
She had to get over him.
Going to see him wasn't a mistake, Janet told herself savagely. She had
wanted closure. She had it now, with a vengeance.
She couldn't love someone so afraid of love. The idea went against reason
and logic and everything she had ever felt.
She shouldn't, wouldn't, couldn't.
She did.
It was crazy. Foolish. How could she be so desperately in love with the
man? For so long, he had only been a friend. Now he was everything.
Love had come suddenly. It could leave suddenly too.
With any luck.
