RATING: PG
SPOILERS: Anything before Threshold is fair game.
FEEDBACK: Please!!! The more responses I get, the faster I can write a new story! Flames will be used to roast marshmallows and make s'mores, but I'm trying to go on a diet, so please try and avoid sending them to me. And this is my first fic, so be kind. My email is pfalcon41@yahoo.com
CATEGORY: Sam/Jack, Daniel/Janet, action/adventure
SUMMARY: Ok, if you've read the first three stories, and have read the title, what happens in this story should be pretty self- explanatory.
SEQUELS: Like I said above, the more feedback I get, the more I want to write. Ok, I know that's technically extortion. Now, ask me if I care. : )
DISCLAIMER: If TPTB try to sue me, I swear I'll laugh. And then I'll laugh some more. Who knows, if I'm lucky maybe I'll be able to stop laughing before they slowly edge away and start talking about sedatives and padded cells.
AUTHOR'S NOTES: Thanks to Becca for beta reading this! And thanx to Pam for not always putting up with my excuses, and, umm, "encouraging" me to get it done faster!
There was a moment of silence after the group on the Asguard ship heard the end of the conversation between General Hammond and Apophis.
"Oh my God," said Janet, stunned. "I can't believe he'd try to do something like that."
"Is it really that much of a surprise?" asked Daniel sarcastically. "He's proven in the past that he'll do anything to get what he wants." Hints of an old sadness lay on his face, but his voice only contained a trace of the bitterness and hatred it had once held whenever he spoke of Apophis.
"And right now, he apparently wants revenge on Teal'c," added Janet. She had observed Daniel's reaction. It still hurts him, she thought, but the pain is fading. Maybe soon he'll be ready. But she brushed the thought away; there were more important things to deal with first.
"Why though?" asked Jacob Carter. "Why would he be willing to make a deal?"
"He can't risk attacking Earth, now that we are under the Protected Planets Treaty. So he is trying to get Teal'c another way."
"But Theus said Apophis was out to destroy Earth," Daniel pointed out. "How does he intend to do that without violating the treaty?"
"It is possible that the Goa'uld believe that since the Asguard are distracted by our battle with the Replicators, our Protected Planets will be vulnerable," said Thor. "They may think we will not be as vigilant in our guard."
"Are they right?" asked Jack.
Thor paused, considering the current deployments of the Asguard fleet. "The Asguard have a duty to those planets named in the treaty. We will not be foresworn of our duty to protect them." He paused again. "However, considering our current situation with the Replicators, it might be - difficult to fight two powerful enemies at once."
Jack nodded, understanding. While he might not be a genius in matters of the past, like Daniel, or of astrophysics, like Sam, he had spent most of his adult life in the Air Force. Jack was just as brilliant in his areas of expertise - military science and strategy, as his teammates were in theirs. He knew that having two enemies to fight was a big problem. Especially when the Asguard could barely defend themselves against the Replicators alone.
But he also knew that the Asguard were deeply indebted to Samantha Carter and the rest of SG1, and would do almost anything to get her back.
He could only hope that, if they all worked together, they would be successful. Over the years he had come to value Carter as his second in command. Hell, he *valued* his entire team as well... but not like her. Their connection had grown to a point where they could easily anticipate the other's move, and work that to the team's benefit. He knew that their teamwork and Carter's quick thinking had gotten them, gotten *him* out of more than a few predicaments.
He had always assumed that one day, when the war with the Goa'uld was over, or he retired, they would finally be able to be together. He was aware that they were often in danger during the course of duty, but after so many years together it had become as if SG1 were untouchable, indestructible. And now he might never see her again.
No. He couldn't think like that. He had to trust that the Asguard could get her back. He also had to trust that the Tok'ra were sincere in their desire to help, or, at least Sam's father was. He couldn't fall into despair, because Sam needed him. With a new resolve, he jumped back into the discussion.
"So, what are we gonna do?"
"Here's the plan," Jacob Carter began. "We send Teal'c to Apophis in a small Tok'ra ship-."
"What?!?"
"It'll only be a decoy. Meanwhile, we'll be nearby on a cloaked Asguard ship. When Teal'c is taken to Apophis we'll activate a bomb, which should destroy most of the primary shuttlebay. Then Thor can transport both Teal'c and Sam out of there before Apophis realizes the explosion was meant to be a diversion."
"Well, if it's that simple, why don't we just transport Sam out in the first place?" asked Jack. "That way, Teal'c wouldn't have to go into danger at all."
"I do not mind going into danger, O'Neill," said Teal'c, "But Jacob Carter, your plan will not work."
"Why not?"
"Apophis has shielding technology specifically designed to block Asguard transporters."
"The shield grid is located next to the shuttlebay," said Selmac, now in control. "The bomb should destroy it, and deactivate the shield."
"Should?" asked Jack.
"How does the Tok'ra agent fit into all of this?" asked Janet, ignoring Jack.
"He doesn't actually do much, which is good, because his cover won't be blown. Basically, his job is to make sure Sam and Teal'c are able to escape alive."
"You know, it would be great if things were that easy," said Jack. "But has anyone noticed that with us, things seldom are?"
Janet raised an eyebrow. "Of course I have, Jack. It's kind of hard not to when you guys land in my infirmary every other week. SG1 has more disasters than a Shakespearean tragedy, and I'm the one who has to put you all back together again."
After pausing a moment to wonder what a Shakespearean tragedy was, Teal'c replied, "It is true that we often get into trouble, Doctor Frasier, however, this plan appears to be sound."
"*Appears* to be," said Jack. "But dontcha think that we should maybe have a backup plan, just in case?"
"Fine," said Jacob Carter, "that makes sense." He paused a moment, consulting Selmac. "How's this: If the bomb doesn't destroy the shield grid, I'll have our agent help them escape. They can then make their way to the secondary shuttlebay, steal a ship, and escape to the nearby, cloaked Asguard vessel. This vessel, in fact."
"How will they defend themselves?"
"I'll have the agent, Hal'con, get a staff weapon for Teal'c, and a Zat for Sam."
Jack thought about the plan for a moment, checking it for any obvious inconsistencies or weaknesses. "Well, I can't say I'm one hundred percent ok with this, but I can't think of a better idea at the moment. I say we go for it."
"Alright. Thor, will you take us to Apophis' ship?"
"We should arrive in about 24 hours."
