He fastened his utility vest overtop his uniform. Around him were other outfitted team members, checking and rechecking gear and equipment. Shuffling a bit in his camouflage and supplies he found it difficult not to tense up. His eyes closed and his breathing slowed; he sensed his heart rate decrease a bit. Then his hands shook. They always shook when he was nervous. He got that one from his mother. His eyes were still shut as he plunged himself back into his own sub-conscious, separating himself from his body. Everything around him became a distant echo.

"Well...", he thought, distracting himself, "This is it. Your first step through the Gate. Dad said it would take a while to get used to. Mom still doesn't like it. Says it's like riding on the worst roller coaster of your life, except you have nothing to grab onto. Shit....I DON'T want to do this. Same horror as when I got my first vaccine for school, only worse. Maybe I could turn and bolt. No...they'd kick my ass up and down the block if I tried that." A pat on the back from one of his fellow team-mates temporarily snapped him back to reality. He grabbed his pack and helmet and followed everyone else out to the Gate room. There he closed his eyes and was plunged back into emptiness.

"I should thank Master Teal'c for the psychological training when I return. This is really helping...I hope. Now what's my job here? Oh, yeah. `Decipher the language on the rock walls outside the Gate'. Sounds easy. I deciphered some stuff SG-22 brought back with them from P3X-45-niner, or something. Piece o' cake. I wish Mom and Dad were here to send me off. Wait, no. That would make me look like a wuss in front of the other guys. Saunders, Mokemba, Juarez. They'd tease me for weeks if they even HEARD about that.

"Okay man...look at your holo-tag, start sending back info, buddy." He began reading his holographic dog tag silently to himself.

(Wonder what I'll get that sexy little girl for her...)

General Grumman's voice bellowed over the loudspeakers, down to the waiting soldiers.

"SG-36, you have a go! Enjoy yourselves people, and don`t cause any trouble, got it?" The cluster of green helmets nodded and each person ran up the ramp towards the event horizon. He was the last to ascend. Or at least he thought he was. Standing merely inches from the shimmering surface, he saw his reflection upon the rippling blue.

"Wow, here goes. Now what was that Grandma Sam said about the amount of energy being expended? On the order of a hundred zilliwatts or something? Hmph! Looks harmless." From behind came a set of footsteps, slowly taping up the ramp. He turned to see his own companion, 2nd Lt. Stolakova, decked out in full off-world gear; walking up to the Gate. Her long auburn hair and big emerald eyes looked out of place beneath the camouflage army helmet on her head. She looked a lot like how his other grandmother, Janet, looked in the old photos with Grandpa Daniel. Of course those were old photographs. He had never met them in real life, they died eleven years before he was born. But Katya was real. And he liked that.

"Jack, sweetie, time to fly!", she purred musically, revealing her heavy Slavic accent. "Don't want everyone waiting!" She pushed against his chest and he instinctually grabbed her wrists to stop her. But it was too late. The inertia created shoved the two into the event horizon leaving nothing but blue waves in their wake.
