Anything at all
I'd give it to you"

"Mom! Will you get that? I'm on the phone!"

Janet sighed. Cassie, it seemed, was constantly on the phone. She picked herself up from the couch - not like missing five minutes of a rerun she'd seen half a dozen times was going to hurt her, anyway - and made her way to the front door. She grabbed her purse on the way, as she figured the person at her door was probably canvassing for a charity, and she could never find it in her heart to say no.

She opened the door and dropped her purse.

"Daniel," she said automatically, her heartbeat speeding up. She took a deep breath, let it out slowly. "What are you doing here?"

"Here, let me get that." Daniel took a step into the house and bent to pick Janet's purse up. He stood up and looked her in the eyes. "I tried to talk to you before, but I couldn't ever find you."

"I thought you didn't have anything to say to me." Janet willed her voice to remain steady, but it wavered a bit.

"I have a lot to say to you. I just… don't know how." Janet noted his voice didn't sound particularly stable either, and it calmed her.

"Just say it, Daniel," she told him quietly.

"You were right." It was almost a whisper, and he paused. Janet didn't say anything, and he finally continued. "You were right about me. I was scared. I am scared. This has never worked for me Janet, and I thought that it would hurt both of us less if we just ignored it." He paused again, and when he spoke, his voice was harsh and uneven. "Janet, I think I love you, and I don't know what to do about that."

"Daniel… do you think that love is easy for anyone? Do you think that having been hurt makes you special? It's scary for me, too." Janet reached out tentatively and touched his shoulder. "Love is supposed to make you want to risk the hurt. Or else it's not really love."

He glanced at where her hand rested lightly, warming his skin a bit through his thin, cotton shirt. He looked up and into her eyes. "I'm here, aren't I?"

"Yeah, I guess you are." Janet dropped her hand.

It was Daniel's turn to reach out. He cupped her cheek, rubbed his finger over her lips. "Can I?" he asked gently.

"Sure," she replied just as softly. He leant over a bit further and replaced his finger with his lips.

Janet thought she was going to faint.
