The New One (page 2)
by Joanna

After all the tests in the infirmary, Anna was given new clothes and a quarter, too. Her first visitor was Major Carter.

" May I come in?" she asked politely.

" Sure. Before you are starting, can I ask you something? When will I see Emily?" she questioned after Sam's nodding.

" Soon. Really. Ms David..."

" Sorry, Major. Whatever you want, but please, just don't call me Ms David."

" Alright. Anne, there is an important thing, we ought to do."

" And what?"

" The secrecy oath."

" Sorry, but I can swear on nothing. I never do."

" It has to be done, Anne."

" What shall I swear on, Major?"

" On the flag of the United Nations."

" Whose idea was this? The Colonel's, am I right?"

" Yeah, but how do you know that?"

" We talked a lot about different kind of things on the plane. Even about religion. I have confessed him, that I was not a practicing Jew, and how I appreciated the project. And obviously you haven't found anything else I can swear on. Are there cameras in this room, Major?"

" What I know, no."

" Good, though you better put out the flag. But I can only promise, and not swear. Is it enough?"

" Well, it ought to be."

She has promised to keep secret of everything, what she might see or hear.

" Dr Jackson will come soon, and he will tell you, what to do."

" Thank you, Major. Bye!"

" Bye!"

Anna was for only five minutes alone. Soon came Dr Jackson, accompanied by Jack.

"Anne, I have finally found him!"

" Dr Livingstone, I presume" Anne stretched out her hand. Daniel was laughing loud, as he shook the offered hand.

" I assume, this was a scientists joke. And those are just as double-Dutch for me, as Jaffa jokes. Good, I will leave you alone."

" Thank you, sir" Anne called after him, smiling. Jack grinned back at her, and left.

Daniel stopped laughing, and took seat on her bed. Anna looked at him with slight amusement on her face.

" Don't do that!"

" What?" she asked with a puzzled expression on her face.

" Smile like this."

" Why not?"

" Jack is always smiling like this, when I'm explaining him something."

" Sorry" Anna sent him a reassuring smile.

" Now you are smiling like Sam."

" Is that good?"

" Better."

Anna straightend her muscles on the face, so she was not smiling anymore.

" I think, you are a pantomime actress. Now you're exactly look like Teal'c."

" Dr Jackson, please."

" Okay, start this again. Good evening, Anne! Can I call you, Anne? I feel, like I know you for eternity."

" Sure Dr Jackson, or shall I call you Emily?" Anna asked with a wicked grin on her lips.

" Jack was right" he mumbled.

" What did you say, Dr Jackson?"

" Nevermind. And please call me Daniel. How did you know, I'm Emily?"

" Wasn't that complicated. It's simply logic, Daniel. Emily calls me Anne, and Sam called me Anne. Colonel O'Neill did it, too. And Sam said, I could see Emily soon, and then said my next visitor should be you. Add two and two together, and there you're Emily. I only want to know one thing."

" It was a friend of mine. Her name is Catherine Langford-Littlefield. Her idea was the project. And she found you for me."

" Why I'm the right person, Daniel?

" I thought, Jack had explained everything."

" Sure, he did. But, Daniel, there are scientists with more reputation and with more skills. My prof has the same qualities, as I."

" I,... we need a person, who is open-minded, and andventureous. Can you imagine your prof stepping through the Stargate?"

" Frankly, not even myself."

" Do you want to see the gate?"

" May I?"

" Sure, follow me!" Daniel said with a wide smile on his face. His smile faded, as he thought about the general’s words. " Anne, you know the repercussions of you being here?"

" I was aware of the consequences in the moment I went on board. I know there is no way back."

" You are not exasperated?"

" No trace of it, Daniel. And you?"

" Jack obviously said everything. I have lost Shau'ri, but I still has the chance to stop the invasion of some wicked aliens. The responsibility makes us to go on, whatever happens."

" You are right" Anna nodded in agreement.

" We are there. Hello, General!" Daniel greeted General George Hammond in a rather unusual way. But he couldn't help it, he was too glad.

" Daniel?" the General was surprised. Then recognized Anna standing behind Daniel.

" Good evening, Ms David."

" Good evening, General Hammond. Daniel said, I might see the gate. May I?"

" Sure."

" Is SG-10 back?" Daniel asked.

" Incoming traveler, sir" the sergeant said to the General.

" Close the iris!" shouted the last man, who arrived thru the gate.

The sergeant quickly closed the defense shield, and they heard something bumping into the iris on the other side.

" At the moment we encounter the Goa'uld more and more" Daniel whispered to Anna.

" What happened, General?" Jack stepped into the control room. But there was no response, because the general was already on the phone, calling the infirmary.

" What happened, Daniel?"

" I don't know, Jack. They were in a battle, if I read the signs right. Lt. Colonel McNeill had the iris closed in time."

Jack bent down to the mike, and switched it on.

" McNeill, can you hear me?"

" Yes, sir!"

" What happened?"

" We encountered hostile folks, sir"

" Hostile?"

" Correct, sir. We arrived, and striking arrows welcomed us. This is hostile, in my opinion."

" Definitly. And who were they? How they looked like?"

" They were blonde, and black. They wore a brown uniform."

" Something else about their uniform, Lt. Colonel?" Daniel asked.

" We had no time to study them, Dr Jackson, but they wore black riding-boots."

" Brown uniforms with black riding-boots, sounds familiar" Jack murmured.

" Maybe from Germany in the Second World War, Colonel."

" Hi, Anne! In medias res, right? Besides, thanks for the help."

" Blonde and black?" Sam asked puzzled.

" Try it again, sir?"

" I don't know, Jack. If yes, just right now. They hopefully not expect another visit so soon."

" SG-3 is ready to go, sirs" Sgt. Major O'Neal announced.

They have sent the M.A.L.P. through, and after it sent peaceful pictures, SG-3 returned to P4X-623.

“ We will need at least three months to train her, sir” Jack informed General Hammond. “ I know, Daniel has never attended such a training, but he had enough time to learn it. And she is so fragile” he said, explaining.

“ Alright, Colonel. I give you a free hand at this. Till she is ready, Lt. Robertson will accompany you, if you should need him. But you will only take standard recon missions.”

“ Thank you, sir. But I think, standard recon missions mean, in our case, standard trouble missions.”

General Hammond permitted himself a half smile at Jack’s remark, then dismissed him.

“ Oh, sir?”

“ Yes, son?”

“ Where will she stay?”

“ Here?” General Hammond asked back.

“ Sir, I thought, we don’t wanna scare her” Jack grinned, thinking back of the conversation in the infirmary earlier.

“ Well, maybe at Dr Fraiser’s, or at Major Carter’s. What do you think?”

“ You have to ask them, sir.”

“ Send them here, please!”

Jack was walking down the corridors, he knew, where he could find the two women. They were in the mess hall. Jack approached them with a smile on his face. They were obviously speaking of Anne.

“ Major, Doctor, General Hammond is waiting for you in his office.”

“ Why?”

“ He will tell you this himself.”

Sam and Janet left the mess hall, and Jack sat down. Soon he got company, Feretti was balancing his coffe cup in his hand.

“ I have heard, that you have just picked up another kid, Colonel O’Neill.”

“ I don’t know anything about a kid” Jack replied.

“ Come on, Colonel! I saw her, she is cute. But she cannot be more, than 21.”

“ Actually she is 27.”

“ What?” Feretti was shocked. “ No way!”

“ I’m telling you the truth, Feretti.”

“ Yes, sir” he nodded absent-minded.

“ What are you thinking about, Feretti?” Jack asked, looking at him suspiciously.

“ I’ll ask her out.”

“ You will do nothing like that, Feretti. And besides, she will have no time for dates. She is a trainee for the next three months.”

“ A trainee?”

“ Yes, Teal’c and I will train her.”

“ Good, if you should need any help, call me” he said, and then left.

“ Go to hell!” Jack murmured after him. He decided, that he will keep Feretti so far away from Anne, as he could.

*******

" May I come in, Major Carter?"

" Sure" she nodded. She was looking at her, examining her movements. She liked her. The General told them, that they should not speak to her about her accommodation. She had to adjust herself a bit. And it seemed, that she was doing it well.

" What can I do for you?" Sam asked her curiously.

" I need a computer, if it's possible. Colonel O'Neill told me, that you could help me."

" What about a laptop? It's all I can offer at this moment."

" It would be very nice. Oh, and where could I send an e-mail?"

" Your laptop will has got a modem, and enough memory."

" But…"

" Don't worry, Anne. I guess, you won't make a big bill for the general."

" Thank you, Major Carter. Can I ask you something? Something personally?"

" And that would be?"

" Are you married?"

" No" she shook her head.

" It's dangerous, isn't it?"

" Yes, it is. But Colonel O'Neill, and Teal'c will train you, don't worry."

" Oh, I don't worry. Colonel O'Neill is a good soldier, and a good commanding officer. He would never let me on a mission, if I'm not prepared."

" How could you know, that he is a good CO?"

" Teal'c told me."

" He could have been lying, you know."

" He will never lie" Anna shook her head.

" How could you know that?"

" Dr Fraiser told me."

" And she is…"

" A very honest person. She told me, that Colonel O'Neill has a very strange kind of humor, and that he could be sometimes rude, but he has got a sensitive side, too."

" She was right."

" I know, I have observed him on the plane. I have got a sister, Major Carter."

" I know, but she is married."

" Yes, she is. And she is pregnant. She would mourn over me, but could go on with her life."

" Exactly" Sam nodded, and placed her hand on her arm. She caressed it reassuringly.

Chapter 2

Jack was sitting in the mess hall next morning, playing with his coffee cup. He was still thinking about Feretti's words.

“ Hello, Colonel!” someone has greeted him. He looked up, and Anna was standing there, smiling, as usual. She held a glass with orange juice. Jack pointed to the chair opposite to him, and saw, as she took place.

" No coffee?"

" I don't drink coffee, sir."

" Smoking?"

" No. I don't even live with drugs."

" What are you doing this morning?"

“ I got this BDU, and an overall. I like them very much, sir. They are very comfortable, and they have got many pockets.”

“ Pockets?”

“ Yes, sir. I have many little things, I need. And now, I can store them in my pockets.”

“ Like what?”

“ Pencils, notes, my Swiss knife. Even my walkman fits into one of the pockets” she showed him her walkman's headset.

“ A Swiss knife?”

“ Yes, sir. It was my father’s, he said, that you were naked without a Swiss knife.”

“ He was right, you know.”

“ I know” she nodded, her eyes a little bit foggy.

“ When did it happen?”

“ Ten years ago. I was only seventeen.”

“ Then Daniel told me the truth, you are 27.”

“ Exactly. And how old are you?”

“ Guess!”

“ 42.”

“ 44, but you were close.”

“ You know, with your cap, I thought you for 37-39.”

“ Yeap, I blame Daniel and Sam for the grey hairs.”

Anna giggled, and earned an indescribable look from Jack.

“ What’s wrong?”

“ You know, when you are giggling, you remember me on Major Carter.”

“ I’m only myself” she said, seemingly hurt. Daniel said, that her smile was like Jacks, and then like Sams.

“ What’s wrong?” Jack asked her, he was aware of her hurt.

“ Nothing, really. Not worth to mention. But you know, I envy you for your team.”

“ Why?”

“ You are like a family. What’s wrong with Daniel?”

“ He has got leukaemia.”

“ How is he?”

“ Early stage. Doc says, that he has got huge chances of a full healing.”

“ That’s good. Is he on chemo?”

“ Will he, Janet is preparing him for the treatment.”

“ I see” she nodded.

“ Sir” Lt. Simmons stepped to their desk.

“ Yes, Lieutenant?”

“ Sir, General Hammond is waiting for Anne in his office.”

“ Thank you, Graham” Anne smiled at the young officer, and then stood up. “I have to go now, sir. Bye, Colonel.”

“ Bye, Anne!” he waved, and looked after her, as she was walking in front of Graham Simmons out of the infirmary. He sighed exhausted, he will have a new task from now on. Men at this base had the tendency falling either for Sam, or for Janet. Anne was the new one. And everybody knew, that Janet and Sam are unattainable. Soon they will know, that the same goes for Anne, too.

**********

“ I wanna stay here at the base, sir” Anna said.

“ You could stay at my place, or at Sam's.”

“ Yes, General Hammond told me already. I wanna stay here, sir.”

“ Why?”

“ I don’t wanna make friends, sir.”

“ Why not?”

“ After Dr Jackson is healed, you won’t need me anymore. And I know he will. He has got the willpower.”

Janet smiled at Sam, and she was smiling back.

“ If you wanna stay here, you can, Ms David.”

“ Thank you, sir” she nodded.

“ Anne, Daniel told us, that you knew the consequences of being here. And you have already friends. Tell us, why you don’t wanna stay with us?”

“ I don’t wanna mess up your life” she said quietly.

“ You couldn’t” Janet said. “ You know, I have a daughter…”

“ Cassandra.”

“ CIA would be glad to have you. Gathering information is your specialty, isn’t it?” Sam asked.

“ Knowledge is power, Major Carter” she said grinning. “Excuse me, Dr Fraiser, you wanted to say something about Cassandra?”

“ She will be glad to know you.”

“ No, she would hate me for taking away Daniel’s place.”

“ Cassie is not…”

“ Every teenager would think the same, Dr Fraiser. I have learned psychology.”

“ And what about Sam’s place?”

“ Yeah what about me?”

“ I’m a night owl.”

“ Every Sam will get her Anne.”

“ I thought, it's, every Jack will get his Jill. Major Carter, sir.”

“ Hurray!” Sam was really glad.

“ It wasn’t because of Cassie, right?” Janet asked her, after they left the general’s office.

“ No” she shook her head.

“ Why then?”

“ Because in the near future, you will have another guest in your house.”

“ Who would that be?”

“ Daniel” Anne grinned at her. Sam bursted out in laugh, but Janet’s gaze stopped her.

“ You have told her?”

“ No, she hasn’t. I have observed you and Daniel for ten minutes. And besides, you have just verified my theory.”

*********

" Daniel, may I come in?" Anne poked her head in. Daniel's door was open, and she saw him packing. " What are you doing?"

" Pack up my belongings. I let you my office" Daniel explained.

" No, Daniel" she shook her head. " I don't need an office, I have got a room for my own."

" That could be not so large, you can barely sleep in them."

" Sam offered me to come to her place. I will rarely use that room for sleeping, it will be my study room."

" Really?"

" Yes, but there is only one problem. Colonel O'Neill allowed me only three books. And I can tell you, that no dictionary was among them."

" Jack and his military mind. I have some dictionaries here, and some on CD-ROM. Feel free to use them."

" You don't wanna come here, while you are going to the treatments?"

" Anne, I will have got nausea, and I will look terrible. I don't want everybody feel pity for me."

" But what are you gonna do all day long?"

" Sleeping, waching TV etc."

" Or you could teach me and Cassie."

" Cassie, what can I teach Cassie?"

" Everything. You are a wise man. And she is a young girl. And I wanna learn from you."

" From me?"

" Sure" she nodded. " If it's not too much for you."

" No, it isn't" Daniel shook his head. " But I think, I won't come quite often here. You should come to me."

" For the first three months I'm a trainee anyway. Maybe there is no need for me to be here everyday."

" Good, that's a deal. Call, if you know your schedule."

" Alright, thank you, Daniel."

" You are welcome, Anne. But what about Cassie?"

" I think, Doctor Fraiser will be glad, if she would spend some time with you. Better, than always with a baby-sitter."

" You are right. I will tell her this, hope she is agreed. And Cassie would cheer me up."

" Sure. Tell Dr Fraiser this, too" she smiled. " What's that?" she pointed at the quantum mirror, lying on Daniel's desk.

" A quantum mirror."

" And what's that?" she asked curiously.

" A portal to other dimensions. Actually this one is no portal, if my theory is right. We had one before, and that was three times larger, than this one."

" Other dimensions? You are travelling to other dimensions?"

" No, mostly not willingly."

" Have you ever been in an other dimension?"

" Yes, twice. And a Samantha was here from another one."

" Cool. And how does it work?"

" It has got a control device, you can search for the right dimension. I think, this mirror was thought for another reason."

" Voyeurism?" Anne grinned at him. Daniel grinned back, and shook his head.

" It had to belong to the ones, who built the mirror. It was a searching device, I assume at least."

" I see. Can you switch it on?"

" Unfortunately not. General Hammond forbid me to do that. It's only here for safety."

" I see. It would be surely interesting to see myself in an other dimension."

" I have seen you, and I have to thank you. Actually, I have to thank your other self, but since she is not here, I thank you."

" Why?"

" I have seen you together with SG-1, and you have warned me, and suggested, that I should go to Janet, and have make a blood-count."

" Really? How was I?"

" Just like now. And you were good with the others."

" Were there differences?"

" Slight ones" Daniel grinned.

" What? Sam and Jack?"

" Anne, how could you know that?"

" I'm not blind, and besides it's obvious. Even General Hammond knows about it."

" They are not together."

" I know, I will live with Sam. They have nothing to hide, except the feelings, they have for each other. So, what was the difference?"

" Jack called her Sam."

" Good" Anne nodded. " When you are back to SG-1, they will call each other by first names."

" Is it a promise, Anne?"

" Do you want me to promise you this?"

" It would be good."

" Then it is a promise, Daniel."

" But, you cannot say them, that they should do this for me."

" Daniel! Please!" she said offended.

" And General Hammond knows?"

" Have you not noticed?"

" To tell the truth, not a bit from it."

" He is smiling secretly, whenever Sam and Jack are talking to each other."

" Really?" Daniel doubted this very much.

" You should look better, Daniel."

" Okay" Daniel nodded, and decided, that he will observe General Hammond
