Prologue

Daniel sighed exhausted. He sat down, and took the mirror in his hands. Sam was observing him, and on her face the worried expression matched the one on Jack’s face. Even in Teal’c’s eyes one could read real worry.

“ Daniel, is everything alright?” Jack asked him.

“ Yeap” Daniel nodded. “ Beside a little nausea and dizziness, thank you, I’m fine.”

Jack knew something was really wrong. Daniel would never give away his discomfort.

“ What’s that in your hand?”

“ A dimensional mirror.”

“ A what?”

“ A quantum mirror. It’s more little, than the one we know. Wanna see?”

“ No, thank you, and I would be glad, if you would put it down.”

“ Don’t worry, I didn’t find the control device yet.”

“ Well, should we look after it? Didn’t General Hammond ordered, not to use the mirror anymore?”

“ It’s another one. I have destroyed that one, after we have came back from Samantha’s reality.”

“ Okay" Jack gave in, sighing. "Carter, Teal’c, look out for the remote control.”

They nodded in unison, and were searching for the device. Teal’c had found it.

“ Thank you” Daniel nodded, and put down the mirror, as Teal'c was handing him said little object. “ Jack, I don’t feel that well, would you mind, if I would stay here, while you are exploring that abandoned village?”

“ Sure, Daniel. You have the radio, call us, if you should need us” before letting them in, Jack and Teal'c had already checked out the cave. It was completely safe.

“ Sure, Jack. Take care of you” he said quietly.

Sam looked back at him, and wanted to stay, but Daniel waved her back. ‘Go’ he emphasized voiceless.

Sam nodded, and left him alone. Daniel searched a little bit through the dimensions. Finally, he found one, where there were people in the cave, he was just sitting in. Jack was just stepping in, followed by Teal’c. Jack looked around, and then called after Sam. Daniel certainly couldn’t hear them, but he could read his lips, forming Sam’s name. Surprisingly, he called her Sam. Soon after Sam stepped in, and she was followed by a young woman. Daniel was shocked. He knew that girl, although only from a picture. But she was no member of the SGC, and he couldn’t even imagine, how came, that she was on that planet. Daniel was observing them for another five minutes, before she had found the mirror. Jack was acting fatherly towards the girl, and towards Sam… Well, he was just tenderly. Daniel assumed, that he cracked his usual jokes, because the two women laughed in unison, after looking at each other, rolling their eyes. Even Teal’c was smiling a bit. And his gaze! He was so proud of her, as he looked at her. Daniel have never seen him looking like this, except maybe, when he was around Rya’c. Sam was reprimanding Jack, and seemingly, they had got a discussion, while Teal’c went with her to examine the cave. They finally found the mirror, and looked through in surprise. She winked at him, smiling, and called after Sam and Jack. Soon they arrived, looking through the mirror in astonishment. She was trying to tell him something, but he didn't understand. Finally, she grabbed some paper, and wrote up something. Sam and she were discussing over, whether she should or not to show him the paper. She won, because Jack was on her side.

‘ Go to Janet, and get yourself checked out. Tell her to make a blood-count’ he could read on the paper. He nodded, and then shut down the mirror. He knew finally, what was wrong with him. He was so glad, that they were so good together. He wished although, that she could work with himself, too. Which will not happen, if the tests will turn out abnormal.

“ Daniel we are ready, are you?” Sam cried in. Daniel shouted back, that he would come, and stood up.

The device fell out of his hands, and he fainted. Sam has found his unconscious body, after they were waiting for him five minutes in vain.

*********

“ What’s wrong with him, Janet?” Sam asked her friend Dr Janet Fraiser.

“ He has got leukaemia” Janet’s face was very pale, and she avoided Daniel’s gaze.

“ Cancer?” Jack asked.

“ Kinda” Daniel nodded.

Sam could tell, that he was scared to death. ‘OOPS, wrong word!’

“ But” Janet’s face lightened a bit “ it’s an early stadium, he has got huge chances for a full healing.”

“ Yes” Daniel was grinning. “ And Doc Fraiser promised me to keep eye on me.”

“ Really?” Sam asked surprised, although she was anything else, than surprised.

“ But” Daniel’s face darkened again.

“ I hate ‘buts’” Jack confessed. “ They make me confused.”

“ I cannot be a member of SG-1, while I have to go to the treatments. We all know what happens then.”

Jack looked at him, and nodded. Sam looked at them, and nodded. Janet dashed out of the room.

“ What’s wrong with her?” Jack asked curiously, looking questioningly at Sam.

“ She says, that she is responsible for this” Daniel explained.

“ I don’t think so” Sam shook her head.

“ Of course, she is not responsible!!” Daniel shouted angryly after Sam, who was running out of the infirmary, too.

“ Nevermind!” she shouted back, and left the men alone. She found Janet in her office.

“ Janet?”

“ I’m not here” came a muffled voice.

“ I know. May I come in?”

“ Yes” came the answer between two sobs.

“ Janet, you have said, that he has got huge chances.”

“ He has got really” Janet nodded.

“ See you, no need for a dash out” Sam smiled at her a reassuring smile.

“ Sam” Janet sighed her name exhausted.

“ I know” Sam said, and squeezed her hand. “ You will keep eye on him. And please, try to gather courage to tell him.”

“ NO!”

“ Yes!”

“ Tell him what?” came the question from the door. Jack was standing there, laening to the door-frame.

“ None of your business, sir” Sam snapped at him.

“ Sorry” Jack stepped back.

“ Sorry, sir. I’m nervous and angry.”

“ I know, Sam. Me, too! Janet, don’t lose hope, he will be okay. He has survived so many things. And don’t blame yourself, ‘coz you are not responsible for this. And tell him, that he means a lot to you, because he needs it more, than anymore” he said, and then got embarresed telling so much, revealing so much worry for Daniel.

“ Tell him?” Janet asked Sam, after the colonel hurried out of her office.

“ Yes” Sam nodded, and left her. She hurried after Jack.

“ Thank you, sir” she whispered. Jack only nodded in response.

They were heading to the General’s office. As they arrived there, Jack knocked on the door.

“ Sir?”

“ Come in! What’s wrong, Colonel?” he could tell, that at this moment they were not quite happy campers.

“ Daniel is seriously ill, sir” Jack said.

“ How seriously?” General Hammond asked quietly.

“ Leukaemia, sir” Sam said.

“ Oh my God!”

***********

“ I have found the perfect replacement” Daniel announced. He called them into the infirmary. They were standing next to his bed. He was still here, Janet was preparing him for the treatment.

“ A replacement, Dr Jackson?” General Hammond was surprised.

“ Yes, sir. Since Robert is dead. And anyway, Robert wouldn’t fit in the team. And to tell the truth, I went trough all the personal files of the linguists, here on base. And nobody could cope well with my team. And I have found the person, who would. The replacement is perfect, but there are two problems.”

“ And they were?” Jack asked.

“ The replacement is not citizen of the United States.”

“ Teal’c neither” Sam said. “ And?”

“ And she is not military.”

“ Waitaminute! It’s a she?” Sam asked.

“ Yes” Daniel looked at Sam, who was deep in her thoughts.

“ You are suggesting a female, foreign, civilian scientist?”

“ Yes, Jack. Actually why not? We have worked together with that Russian doctor, Markova, if I remeber her name right.”

“ Is she ready to take this job? I mean does she have got a family?”

“ She has got a sister in Japan. She is married to an American businessman. Except this sister, she has got nobody.”

“ Dr Jackson…” General Hammond looked at him.

“ Sir, she knows eight modern languages and eight dead ones. Her hobby is history, and comparative religion history. She is in a very good shape. She does orienteering and swimming. She is young, very young, she could learn everything.”

“ How young?”

“ 27.”

“ Really young” Sam stated. “ Where did you meet her?”

“ We are working together since last year. She is in my team.”

“ What kind of team?” Jack asked him.

“ A project called ‘One’. It’s about an international language. It was Catherine’s idea. She was searching on the Web for young, talented linguists. Anne was one of them.”

“ Is she nice?”

“ Very nice. Sam you will like her. Together with her friend, she wrote a German teaching program for PCs.”

“ She wrote a program?”

“ Yes.”

“ She is perfect, sir” Sam turned to General Hammond.

“ Another computer freak?” Jack asked, seemingly complaining.

“ You could go and bring her here, Colonel O’Neill. Teal’c will accompany you. And don’t scare her. Both of you! Which country Dr Jackson?”

“ Hungary.”

“ Good. Nato-member, even Kfor-member. No problem there!”

“ Why is it always me?”

“ Stop complaining! Sir” she added. “ I like her.”

“ You don’t even know her, don’t even see her” Jack retorted.

“ Wanna see a picture of her?”

“ Yes!” came four voices in unison, Teal’c only nodded. Daniel took his wallet from the nightstand, and searched it through for the picture.

After he had found it, he handed it to General Hammond. He looked down at the picture, nodded, and then passed it to Dr Fraiser. Janet handed it to Teal’c, and he to Sam. A wide grin crossed Sam’s face, and she finally handed the photo to Jack.

“ Finally. I mean, ranks don't count here, or what?”

“ Look at the picture, Jack” Daniel suggested. Jack looked down, and sighed. Without a word, he tucked the picture into his vest pocket.

“ Teal’c, get ready” he said, and left the infirmary. The outbursting laughs accompanied him on his way to the elevator. He pulled out the picture once again, and smiled. The girl could have been his own sister. The eyes, the grin and even the features. Except, that she was beautiful. Still the sandy blond hair, he had once, but with an auburn touch, as the summer sun was shining through it. She was standing on a cliff, the sea beneath a wonderful turquoise. She had a grin on her face, and Jack could swear, that she just told a joke to the one, who took the picture.

*******

Anna felt as she were all alone in the huge building, then she thought it might be the truth. It was 5 p.m., Friday, the 20th December. Last "duty day" before Christmas for all the students at the university, some might have exams already. She felt really sorry for them. Anna's students came up with the idea to spend the lesson with shopping, but she refused. They were disappointed, since she was always open for "good ideas". At the end they really enjoyed the games, Anna made up for them. Now she was walking towards her office, that she shared with the other instructors. She saw the janitor looking at her pitifully. If she knew, she were here of her's own free will, she would felt anything else than pity. On these days she felt the nonpresence of her sister tenfold. She felt left alone, standing solitary in the world. She wanted to be needed, she wanted to be loved. Suddenly she heard the phone rang in the office, and she dashed in.

" German Department, Anna David speaking."

" Hi Anna! It's me, Sven."

" Sven, glad to hear you. How do you do?"

" Thanks I'm fine, I've just read your article on the Web, excellent job."

" Thank you, but there are people, who might not share your opinion."

" Your Prof?"

" Exactly."

" Don't be disappointed, he is a fossil. Did you hear something from Emily?"

" She phoned me yesterday, and she said, we could be done next year."

" Our project leader was always that optimistic. Your Prof would have a better opinion, if he knew, what you have done to keep this project on its way."

" Yeah, but actually this information is confidential."

" I have to go, but Merry Christmas!"

" To you too, and we’ll meet on the 27th."

" Yeah, I can barely wait. Oh, Piet will phone you soon. Bye!"

" Bye!"

Anna stood for a moment in the darkness, then she went back to the door, and turned the light on. For the phone there was enough light from outside, where the snow shone bright in the street lighting. She longed for to sit in her chair and go to the Web, where her sister was waiting for her already. ‘Strange, I don't remember to leave my chair towards the window.’ The chair suddenly turned to her, and she could barely hold back a scream, but she knew, nobody would come to her aid. The janitor was surely watching TV, and except him, nobody was there.

" Hi, Miss David!" said somebody from the chair. He had something like a baseball cap on his head, and sunglasses covered his eyes. He wore an uniform, and Anna could identify him as a colonel of the USAF. His nametag read "O'Neill".

" Hi!" replied she smiling. "What can I do for you?" she was really proud of her strong nerves. Her thoughts ran frantically for a solution. Her plan was to ply him with words, while she could wait for the right opportunity to escape.

" We need your help. You must come with me."

" Where?"

" To the United States, but I think you've already noticed my uniform."

" Sure I did, Colonel O'Neill" she answered grinning. Jack grinned back at her.

They stared at each other for a moment, if they were waiting for something.

The phone rang suddenly, and at the second ring Anna was already out of the office. Where she was bumped into a tall, black man. He wore sunglasses too, and a "dock-worker" hat. Anna sighed disappointed, and Colonel O'Neill grinned at her triumphantly.

" It's even worse, than in Colorado, O'Neill" said the guy with the funny hat.

" What do you mean?" asked Anna curiously.

" The weather" he answered.

" As we convinced Miss David to come with us, we're on the way home."

" I bet, you have never been in Siberia. Can I pick up?" she then turned to Jack.

" Why not?" Jack shrugged his shoulders.

Anna lifted up the reciever.

" German Department, Anna David speaking."
...
" Hi, Piet! Sven has just phoned me."
...
" Thanks.
...
"Yes, she has told me too."
...
" We shall meet on the 27th. Bye!"

Anna then took a deep breath and looked at the two men. " Gentlemen, I' m really pleased to meet you, but I have to do."

" No, you don't."

" Sure, I do. My sister is waiting for me and..."

" Your sister is in Tokyo."

" And how do you know that? Besides, she is waiting for me on the Net."

" You can call her from the plane, but we have to go now."

" Where?"

" Oh for crying out loud, I have already said it " he replied, and looked at his companion with disappointment. " I guess, Emily was wrong, Teal'c."

" Emily is rarely wrong, O'Neill."

" Waitaminute! Who are you talking about?"

" About Emily, the leader of the project called ONE."

" This information is confidential. No one knows about it."

" Emily does, and Emily is working for us."

" Why didn't she mentioned anything yesterday?"

" Because it was a quick decision to come here. Emily told us, you were the right person to solve our problems, as you are a linguist, and you are interested in religions and history, and all that…"

" Jazz” she ended his sentence. Jack nodded with a grin. “ But there are other scientists..."

" And you do orienteering and swimming. You are in a good shape."

Anna stared at him, and then nodded. She then noticed a little movement from Teal'c.

" What was that?"

" I'll explain you later" said the Colonel. "Granted you ..."

" I'll work with Emily?"

" In a manner of speaking, yes."

" Alright then, I'll go with you."

Chapter 1

" I think, Daniel, your choice was pretty good" nodded Jack with appreciation to Dr Daniel Jackson, who sat opposite him in the debriefing room.

Major Carter looked curiously at her C.O. and then at Teal'c.

" The little miss could be a good soldier."

" Really?" Daniel asked surprised with General Hammond in unison.

Teal'c nodded, with the same facial expression, to what they were used to.

" And how did you come to this conclusion, Colonel?" asked General Hammond.

" Should I play Freud for you?"

" If you've already asked, yes. We need to know about her a little more, since we have to work with her together."

" Alright, alright. First, she has strong nerves. As she has noticed me, she even didn't give a little gasp from her. She is a good strategic, too. She plyed me with words, while she was thinking about a plan how to escape from me."

" Exactly" nodded Teal'c in agreement.

" Third she has got excellent reflexes, and knows the opportunity to use. The phone rang only twice, there she was already off the room. And she didn't mentioned us to her Dutch friend on the phone."

" Why not?" asked Daniel.

" She knew exactly that there was no use" replied instead of Jack General Hammond.

Jack only nodded and wanted to go on, but Sam interrupted him.

" Why did she finally agree?"

" Because of Emily, and that I knew about the project."

" Anything else I should know about?" inquired General Hammond.

" Yes, sir. We showed her Junior on the plane.”

“ You did?” Daniel looked at Teal’c astonished.

“ Why not?” Jack asked. “ Besides, she noticed Junior’s movement at the very first moment. Oh, sir, and we called Tokyo from the plane."

" Why that?"

" We had to, sir. Her sister was waiting for her on the Net, and I have had to promise her, she could do. That's her only fault, she is very much dependent on the Internet."

" You have to admit, Jack, it's cheaper to chat with Tokyo on the Net, than talk with Tokyo on the phone."

" Sure, I see. I still think, she is very much dependent."

" I think, sir, it's only your natural dislike of computers" Sam said smiling.

" Maybe. And you and Daniel are obviously enjoying the fact, that there is another computer freak among us."

" Did you tell her, who Emily REALLY is?"

" Nope. Your task" said Jack and then walked out of the debriefing room. “ But I won’t wonder, if she would figure it out very soon.”

********

" Are you allergic to something?" asked Dr. Fraiser from Anna.

" I throw up from the spatula, except that, to nothing" smiled Anna at her.

" Alright, then mouth wide open, and press your tongue down. Done. We have to make an allergic test, too. It could be dangerous since there are extraterrastrial stuffs. Are you agreed?"

Anna considered the risks, then nodded.

" She is even thinking" stated General Hammond, who was standing in the observation room.

Major Carter nodded and asked him: " What's with the secrecy oath, sir?"

" Find out something, Major. She cannot swear on the flag of the United States."

" Of course not, sir. Maybe on the Bible."

" With this name, I have doubts about that " Daniel stepped in. " David is a Jewish name. What are they doing to her?"

" She has to make a blood test and a CT, then the allergic tests."

" This can last for a while. Daniel, please come with me, and help to find something she can swear on. Sir?"

" Dismissed, Major. Dr Jackson, stay for a moment, please."

" I'm waiting for you in the lab, Daniel."

" Dr Jackson, I guess, you're aware of your responsibility for the little miss."

" Yes, sir."

" I hope everything will be alright. Actually I expect everything will be okay. The Colonel has almost reassured me, though almost. I want not to be disappointed."

" Yes, sir. May I ask you something, General?"

" Sure, out with it!"

" What will happen to Anne, after she has helped us?"

" If she's willing, she may stay, if she is not, she must. What do you think? Will she want?"

" I think, yes, sir" Daniel nodded.

" I think it, too. She seems to me enthusisatic enough, and if Jack were right, she was loyal. Anything else?"

" No, sir."

" Then you may leave, Dr Jackson."

Daniel was heading to the lab with a silly grin on his face. As he stepped in, Sam was wondering, why he is so happy.

" Actually I only feel relief, Sam. You were there, Jack and Teal'c talked about her with appreciation, and the General accepted her, too. I'm really glad. Let's find something out, Sam!" he said, and then turned to the monitor to study Anna's personal file.

After half an hour of examining, they were there, where they had started, they've found absolutely nothing. They stared at each other with a perplex expression on their faces.

" Daniel, Carter what are you doing here?" Jack reluctantly walked into the lab. He really did hate all those "doohickeys".

" We are about to find something Anne can swear on" replied Sam.

" We didn't find anything. Have you got any acceptable idea, Jack?" asked Daniel.

" Where is your problem? She is working on that project of yours, and it's about an international language. I think, she does believe in the co-operation of the nations. The flag of the United Nations should done."

" Do you really think, sir, it's enough?"

" Well, she could swear on the Tora, too, but since she is not a practicing Jew, it's the same problem, as with the other things. ... She told me that on the plane" he added, as the response for the wondering expressions on their faces.
