Janet sighed as she set Sergeant Sullivan’s arm. It had been a hectic afternoon in the infirmary, with SG’s 10 and 3 returning early, both with injuries. Luckily, no one was hurt too seriously, but it had been a busy few hours patching and tending to wounds. She knew she should be used to it, considering where she worked, but she’d rather hoped for a lighter day today.

“All set, Sergeant. But you’ll want to take it easy for a few days, let that bone set and heal.”

Getting a nod in reply, she moved on to check several other patients, realizing that every bed except the one designated “Dr. Jackson’s” was occupied. Sighing, she rubbed her forehead, hoping to ward off a migraine. The last thing she needed was a headache with the plans she had for tonight.

She was standing in the far corner of the infirmary, checking off one of the airmen’s medical charts when she felt a pair of strong arms weave around her waist. Smiling, she leaned back against his solid frame, breathing in the unique scent that was his and his alone.

“You looked busy, I didn’t want to disturb you earlier.”

She smiled, taking a quick glance around the infirmary to make sure they weren’t noticed before turning around and raising her gaze to his. Her breath caught at the intense look in those blue eyes, a look she now realized was filled with a love and desire beyond her wildest dreams.

“I’m glad you disturbed me.”

His low laughter sent a shiver down her spine as he leaned down and brushed his lips over hers. Unwilling to accept such a light kiss, she wrapped her free arm around his neck, drawing his lips to hers for a deeper, more intimate kiss, which he returned with enthusiasm. It should probably be criminal, what his kiss could do to her body, but if it was, then she wanted to be locked up forever.

Daniel had to control his desire to moan as he lost himself in the kiss, his hands tightening around her, one moving to run up and down her spine, feeling the heat of her skin even through the lab coat and shirt she wore. He would never get tired of kissing her, of making love to her, the woman he loved more than anything in the world.

“Geesh, how come I never get that welcome when I enter your infirmary?”

Jack O’Neill’s amused voice brought them both apart, although Daniel refused to let Janet go, keeping her locked in the circle of his arms.

“I think Sam would have something to say about that. Not to mention I’d have to hurt you,” he replied to his best friend, smiling as Jack laughed.

“Now that I’d like to see Space Monkey. But onto more important matters, did you talk to the Doc about that request from the residents of PX5-493?”

Janet looked from Jack to Daniel with surprise. “What request would he be talking about Daniel?”

Daniel looked sheepish for a moment, before shooting Jack a death glare. “I was just about to when you so rudely interrupted us.”

“Right, you were definitely planning on “talking” with your lips locked.”

Janet smiled at their banter, knowing that the men enjoyed it in their own way. It was one of the most unique friendships she’d ever known and it still fascinated her to this day. But the topic of conversation still held her mind.

“So, back to this request-”

Daniel sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “It seems some of the people on PX5-493, the planet we visited a few weeks ago, are suffering from what sounds like the flu. However, they sent us a message asking if our “healer” might come and check them over, just to make sure things were okay.”

Janet frowned, looking up at him, knowing he must realize what tonight was. It was obvious by his remorseful expression that he did.

“So, the General wants me to go?” She hated the resignation in her voice, knowing this was her job and the needs of it at times had to come before her personal life.

“I’m afraid he wants us both to go, although, at least we’ll be together,” Daniel tried to inject a note of regret into his voice, but it wasn’t helping that Jack was grinning madly at him from behind Janet’s left shoulder. He made a mental note to ask Janet to seriously bring out the big needles on his best friend’s next physical.

Janet sighed, trying to imagine spending tonight on a strange world instead of at the nice restaurant where they had reservations. “Okay, I suppose I better get a few supplies together, we’re leaving soon?”

Daniel nodded, still trying to keep a straight face. “We leave in about a half hour, I’ll meet you in the gate room? Unless you need help?”

Janet shook her head, leaning up for one more kiss, trying not to feel resentful. “I’ll be ready, supplies and all.” With that, she muttered a few more things under her breath as she left, two highly amused men watching her go.

“Well, she bought it, now all you have to do is deliver, my friend.” Jack slapped Daniel on the shoulder, earning a smile that made him proud, considering it reflected one of his best expressions.

“Oh, thanks to you guys, the General and that favor you called in from Thor, I think I’m going to deliver more than she ever expected.” Daniel knew he sounded proud, but it had taken a lot of planning and a lot of favors to pull off what he had planned. He only hoped he’d remembered everything.

“You have the most important thing to make tonight a success?” Jack’s voice turned serious, knowing how important this was to his friend.

Daniel nodded, patting the right side pocket of his pants. “Right here, hasn’t left my side for the past two days.”

Jack nodded, giving his friend a smile and a light tap on the shoulder. “Good luck, and I want details!”

Daniel laughed as Jack turned to leave. “Well, we’ll have to compare notes since I’m sure Sam will get her own version as well.” His friend only laughed, raising a hand in farewell before disappearing through the double doors.

Taking a deep breath, Daniel mentally checked off his list of last minute things to do. “Thor buddy, I really, really hope you got my request right,” he muttered under his breath as he turned and followed Jack from the infirmary.

“Doctors, you have a go! Good luck and Godspeed.”

With the General’s reassuring words, Daniel and Janet nodded to him, before walking up the ramp together, pausing before the shimmering event horizon. Looking over at Janet, Daniel smiled, reaching for her hand. She returned the squeeze he gave it, and with their eyes on each other, they stepped into the eddying waves of blue.

General Hammond stood staring after them for a few moments, a genuine smile on his face.

“Sir?”

He turned at Sergeant Siler’s voice, smiling at the concerned look on the younger man’s face. “Everything’s fine, Sergeant. But I believe I need to make slight change to my wager.”

With a grin, Siler pulled out a small blue book and a pen.

“Daniel, this planet is beautiful!”

Janet wasn’t sure what else to say, considering the beauty surrounding her was almost too breathtaking for words. In her mind, she pictured the opening scene from “Beauty and the Beast” complete with the waterfall, forest and brilliant, vivid colors of green, blue and purple. The beauty was enhance by the dying rays of the sun as it sank lower in the sky, casting a golden glow that did nothing to mute the natural colors.

“Yeah, it kind of had that same effect on us when we visited.”

Daniel was pleased she liked the surroundings, sensing it boded well for the rest of the night.

“So, how far is the village?”

Janet looked around for any signs of civilization, but seeing none, turned to him with a small frown.

Motioning towards a small path off to their left, he grabbed her hand and pulled her along with him, sending a quick though skyward that he hoped Thor heard. Reaching the small clearing that was their goal, he smiled in relief to see everything was laid out as planned.

“Daniel, this clearing is rather small for a vill-” She trailed off as she walked around him, getting her first glimpse of the small glen they were in. Trees formed a natural, circular enclosure around a bed of the greenest grass she’d ever seen. In the center of the circle sat a small table, set for two with what looked like a selection of fruits and cheeses. Soft music, Handel if she wasn’t mistaken, filled the glen, although she could not find the source of it to save her life.

This was definitely not what she was expecting.

Daniel watched her varying expressions, relieved to see confusion the dominant one as she looked back to him.

“Daniel? What’s going on?”

“I wanted to take you someplace, literally, out of this world, for our one year anniversary.” He smiled at her gasp, leading her towards the table, helping her shrug off her pack as he laid his own on the ground. Pulling out her chair, he settled her in place before taking the seat opposite her. He once again thanked Cassie for her contribution of padded chairs. It made this all the more comfortable.

“Daniel, when did you-how did you?” She couldn’t even complete her thought, still amazed that he’d gone to all this trouble for her.

“I had help from everyone, including Thor, who most kindly provided the transportation of most of this here from the base and is providing the music, of his choice I might add.”

He smiled at her awed look, enjoying the pure happiness he could read in her expression. Any worries he might have had that she would think this all too much were laid to rest in the gaze full of wonder and love she focused on him.

“It’s beautiful, and perfect, and, well, Thor has great taste in music. He didn’t pick that up from Jack, did he?” She smiled as Daniel laughed even as she tried to find the words to express what was truly in her heart.“

“So you really like it?” Daniel knew he sounded like the overeager puppy Jack tended to call him at times, but he wanted to make sure she was happy.

Janet smiled into his eyes before replying. “I can’t find any other words to say how much I love this place, how much I love you, Daniel Jackson.”

Her eyes filled with tears of joy she was nearly unable to hold back. No one had ever done something like this for her and the fact that it was Daniel made it only the more special. She only hoped her words were enough to convey that to him.

“I love you too, Janet.” Daniel smiled as he leaned over the table and captured her lips in a sweet kiss, marveling in the pure happiness he felt flowing between them. When they finally parted for breath, he smiled into her eyes as he reached for a grape.

“So, you hungry? Jack and Sam suggested the menu.” He smiled as he held the grape to her lips, shivering as she took it from him, her teeth nipping his fingers in the process. Controlling his baser urges, he reached for a piece of cheese, fascinated by watching her lips move as she chewed.

Janet swallowed the grape, it’s tartness bursting over her taste buds in a welcome sensation. Feeling her heart race at the expression in Daniel’s eyes, she leaned forward again and took the second offered morsel, using the opportunity to swipe her tongue over his fingers, making sure she got every last little bit of the crumbly, aged cheese.

Daniel swallowed hard as he watched her chew, seduced by the look in her eyes, which never left his. Not for the first time, he found himself wondering how in the world he’d been lucky enough to merit the love of this woman.

“What is it?” Janet noted the look in his eyes and suspected where his mind was, but knew he needed to say it before she could reassure him.

“Just wondering how I got so lucky as to find you, much less how you managed to fall in love with me after everything we’ve been through.”

Janet heard the true question in his voice and immediately reached over to take his hand, making sure his gaze was focused on her.

“With everything we’ve been through, how could I not fall in love with you, Daniel?” Seeing his eyes soften, she smiled and leaned closer. “I think I started falling for you that first day in my infirmary, Sam and Jack were losing it, yet you managed to make me smile with your “you’re the doctor, Doctor” line. Then I kept seeing you, your penchant for injuries becoming legendary, and well, we became friends. And despite everything against us, I kept on falling throughout the eight years we’ve known each other.”

Daniel swallowed hard, reading the truth in her eyes. “You know, it took me a bit longer to realize how I felt, although, I did sense the spark between us at that first meeting. But there was Sha’re and well-”

“The time wasn’t right.” She offered the suggestion quietly, having talked through this before. She knew Sha’re would always occupy a part of his heart, and she respected that. However, after years of knowing him, she realized that he’d finally managed to put his past behind him and was ready and willing to start again with her. It humbled her every time she thought about it.

“Well, all I can say is the best thing that I ever did was getting up the courage to ask you out.” He smiled at the memory, although the images were not the most pleasant. “The world was falling apart around us, Jack was in danger of dying from his brain overload, and all I wanted to do was find one piece of reality in the chaos around us. Something to live for, and there you were.”

He stopped, his voice choking as he remembered seeing her through the haze of the fighting going on around them. With Jack all but lost, Sam a mess and Teal’c trying to ally the Jaffa to their cause, he’d felt lost and alone. But then he’d looked over at Janet, watched her tending to the wounded, reassuring and calming them, he’d felt a calmness overcome him. In that instant, when he’d needed to believe in something more than anything, she’d looked up at him, and smiled. His heart had been hers ever since.

Janet felt a tear escape her tight control as he reached over and cupped her cheek in his palm. “I vowed then and there that if we made it out of there alive, I’d stop fighting what I’d been feeling for years. And it was the best promise I’ve ever kept.” Leaning in, he sealed the words with a kiss that left them both panting for breath when they parted.

Sensing Janet was at a loss for words, he took the opportunity to slip to his knees before her, smiling at the expression he could see dawning in her eyes. Reaching for his pocket, he pulled out a small, velvet box and placed it in her palm.

Janet’s brain registered the symbolism of the gesture, but she couldn’t seem to process much more than the sight of Daniel on his knees, looking at her with more love than she’d ever hoped to find. Hands shaking, she reached for the small box, carefully pulling it open.

She gasped at the sparkle of the diamond solitaire housed within.

“Daniel-”

He stopped her with a finger to her lips, his heart in his eyes as he caught her gaze.

“Janet Fraiser, will you make me the happiest man in the universe and agree to be my wife?”

Janet felt another tear escape as she realized that even in her dreams, this scenario had never seemed so perfect. Taking a deep breath, she allowed Daniel to remove the ring from its box, smiling through her tears as he slipped it on her finger.

“Well?”

Daniel knew, from her response, what she would answer, but he needed to hear it. Smiling, near tears himself, he reached up and brushed his thumbs across her cheeks, wiping away her tears.

“Yes. Yes, I’ll marry you, Daniel Jackson.”

His own tear escaped at her words, and leaning up, he pulled her lips down to his, kissing her with all the passion and happiness he’d never thought he could feel again in his life.

Janet lost herself in his kiss, allowing him to pull her from her seat until she was straddling him on the ground, their hands and lips communicating a message that needed no words.

When they finally parted for breath, Daniel held her to him, stroking her hair, allowing their racing hearts to calm. Neither said a word, content simply to enjoy the magic of the moment.

Daniel’s eyes widened as hundreds of candles suddenly appeared out of thin air, floating in and around the trees, giving the glen a soft light now that the sun had sunk beyond the horizon.

“What in the world?”

Janet looked up in confusion, awed at the soft candlelight around them.

“I think Thor’s happy for us,” he whispered, as both turned their gazes skyward and smiled.

“Thanks, Thor.” Daniel whispered the words, feeling Janet nod against him.

Settling back in his arms, Janet allowed herself to fully absorb the situation. She’d just been proposed to by the man of her dreams, in a beautiful glade, on another planet, watched over by friendly aliens. Suddenly, something occurred to her.

“Daniel? When do we have to go back?”

Daniel looked at her in surprise, stopping his actions for a moment. “Well, I told the General that if all went as planned, we’d be back before 10.” He stopped as Janet looked at her watch, turning back to him with a huge smile.

“Well, we’ve still got several hours, and I’d hate to let this secluded, candlelit glen go to waste-”

Daniel felt his body harden at the look in her eyes, as she snaked her fingers up his chest and began undoing the buttons of his shirt. Smiling, he leaned down to work on hers, taking the chance to whisper in her ear along the way.

“I like the way you think, Doctor.”

As she gave herself over to his touch, something suddenly occurred to her.

“Our kids are going to love the story of their father’s proposal.”

Their soft laughter was soon replaced by passionate groans and sighs as they expressed their love in the oldest way known to man.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Somewhere, high above the small glen, a small alien turned away from a huge view screen, shutting it off for the night. Making his way towards an aerodynamic chair, the creature opened a separate channel of communication to where five people sat around a long table, playing cards and anxiously glancing at the looming Stargate behind them.

“All is well, O’Neill.”

Jack brightened as the small alien figure projected itself into the briefing room. “That’s great, little buddy! So she said yes?”

“Details, Thor, we want details,” chimed in Sam, who exchanged a conspiratorial look with Cassie, who sat across from them.

“That you will have to ask for yourselves. I will be in contact soon.” With that, the image disappeared, leaving a questioning SG-1 behind. If Jack O’Neill had seen the small creature settling back in his chair in those next few moments, he would have sworn that Thor was smiling.
