It wasn't so much the fact that Cassie was dating; it as the fact that Janet just wasn't ready for it. She knew the boy, she even liked the boy but it all seemed to just creep up on her. And here it was Friday night and she sat at home with her best friend while her daughter was out with her boyfriend. Boyfriend. Janet wanted to smile and cringe at the same time.

"So, its pretty serious with Cassie and Dominic?" Sam asked as she accepted a cup of coffee from Janet. She'd come over to hang out with Janet and maybe give her a little support.

Janet nodded in the affirmative as she sat on the sofa with Sam. "I guess I need to get used to it," she sighed.

Sam leaned back against the back of the sofa, relaxing with her friend. It had been too long since they were able to just hang out, the two of them. And Sam was also curious to hear about Cassie's date when she got home.

"I don't think my Dad ever got used to it...and to tell you the truth, I don't think he ever will." Sam smiled to herself, a flash of a memory of her attempts at dating as a teen.

Her expression wasn't lost on Janet "So, that smile looks like it could be a good story."

Sam gave a quick glance to her friend then grinned, "Oh, yeah, there's a good story."

"I'm waiting." Janet turned toward Sam, eager to hear some wonderful story to ease her mind.

"I was 17 and had been dating this guy named Patrick," Sam smiled again; Patrick brought back fond memories.

"I take it you really liked this Patrick."

Sam caught herself and continued "Oh yes. I don't know if I was in love with him but we were inseparable. Which made my father nervous."

"Because he didn't want you getting serious about a boy just before you left for college." Janet offered, knowing how Sam's father felt.

"Partly, and partly because he knew what 17 year old boys had on their mind." Sam caught Janet's nervous look at her statement but continued, patting Janet on the knee to reassure her. "Anyway, I decided that Patrick was going to be the one. He'd been putting pressure on me to have sex and, to be honest, I was curious to see what all the fuss was about."

Janet laughed, "Just thought you'd experiment?"

"Yeah. So, my Dad was supposed to be out of town one weekend and Mark was already off at college so I was going to have the house to myself all weekend."

"You didn't!"

"Oh yeah and it was great!" she couldn't stop grinning.

Janet sat up and looked at Sam "This is NOT what I need to be hearing right now."

Sam placed a reassuring hand on her friend's arm "No, no, no...we didn't have sex. Well, not that weekend."

Janet rolled her eyes and sighed, "This isn't making me feel any better."

"Sorry...the funny thing is that Patrick and I decided to wait and not put pressure on ourselves so we just
had a great weekend together. Well, at least until my father came home early."

"Oh no."

"Oh yes. Let's just say that Patrick and I were on the sofa and not in a position that a father wants to see his daughter in."

"Ok, Sam, don't need the imagery...hey, I thought you said you guys didn't have sex."

"No, but if my father hadn't come home early, that's where it was headed."

"Oh, no." Janet was laughing by now, imagining Jacob Carter's face.

"Fortunately we were still dressed...somewhat." Sam shrugged and sat back, propping her feet on the ottoman.

"What did he do?"

"There was a lot of yelling and Patrick just left. But once my dad calmed down, we had a talk." Sam smiled as she took another sip of her coffee.

"What did you talk about?"

"Oh, he told me that if he found out I was sleeping with 'that boy' he would ground me until I went to college."

"Guess his threat didn't work."

"Nope. The next weekend I told him I was staying at my friend Lisa's and Patrick and I went to a hotel."

Janet sat there in shock. When Sam didn't hear any reaction she looked over at her friend.

"You ok, Janet?"

Janet's brow furrowed as she looked at Sam "Yeah, it's just a side of you I hadn't known existed."

"Oh, I did lots of stuff like that as a teen. I tended to get into trouble, a lot."

"You?"

"Don't sound so shocked. My teachers said I just wasn't challenged enough. I mean, I kept up my grades but I guess I was looking for more adventure."

"Well, now I feel better" she added with a heavy amount of sarcasm.

"I'm sorry, Janet, I guess that wasn't a good story to tell you."

"No, it wasn't. But I guess I have to trust Cassie and hope that I raised her well enough to come to me."

"You did, Janet. My father didn't know what to do with a girl. But you do and you've done an amazing job. She's a great kid."

"Thanks. Now THAT makes me feel better."

They both settled back again.

"So," Sam started innocently "what's going on with you and Daniel?"

"That was subtle."

"I'm your best friend Janet, I deserve to know these things."

Janet smiled but didn't reveal anything.

"C'mon, Janet, I told you that story."

"Ok, Ok, but I didn't ask for that story."

Sam smiled eagerly; she was finally going to hear the details.

"Not much to tell. Daniel took me to the concert last Saturday. Sunday he helped Cassie with homework and then hung out with me while she went out. That's it."

"No, that's not it. Are you guys dating, what?"

"We're going out with each other."

"Dating."

"Yes."

"So, has he kissed you?"

"Sam!"

"Well!"

"Yes, he kissed me. And we got caught ourselves." She blushed.

"Oh no, Cassie?"

"Yeah, she got home from the movie last Sunday and..."

Sam sat up. "What!?!"

"Oh, god no! Not that! Geez, Sam...where's you mind? No, we were...making out like teenagers on the sofa." Janet smiled a the memory.

Sam's mouth dropped open. Speechless.

"Sam? You ok?"

Sam shook her head to come to her senses. "Wow."

"Yeah, 'wow' is the right word." Janet smiled knowingly.

"Wow. This is...great."

"Don't tell anyone, I don't want this all over the base."

"Well, I think the Colonel knows."

"How?"

"Well, I sort of said that I thought you two were dating."

"He won't say anything."

"No, he'll just give you two hell about it...but in a loving way."

They both laughed. As the evening went on, they shared more stories of their teen escapades, each trying to out do the other. But Janet had to admit that Sam's rebellious teen years were much more interesting.

"You know, you can't tell anyone the stories I told you." Sam made the statement with a slight seriousness in her voice.

"By no one you mean Col. O'Neill."

"By no one, I mean no one! I have a reputation to maintain."

"Ok, I don't tell the secret Sam stories and you don't mention me and Daniel."

"I won't have to, the way you guys have been looking at each other this week, I think most people have
figured it out."

"Are we that obvious?"

"Not really, only to people who know you."

Janet felt a little more courage to confide in her best friend.

"Sam, I really like him, a lot. I'm scared I might be falling for him."

"I think you already have."

She smiled warmly at Sam. "Yea, I think I have."

There was a reason she was her best friend.

"Hey, Daniel, wait up." Jack jogged to catch up to Daniel as he was trying to leave the base.

"What is it, Jack?"

"Teal'c and I were going to go do something tonight, why don't you join us?"

Daniel paused, the last time he met up with them it involved lots of jello, he wasn't sure if he was willing to risk it.

Jack noticed his hesitation "No jello, I swear...I'm picking the place this time."

"I have this work to do." Daniel held up the papers he had in his hands.

"It can wait...I mean, unless you've got plans with someone in particular and you're using work as an excuse to sneak away," he baited him.

Daniel shook his head and smiled as he continued to walk to the elevators.

"C'mon Daniel, come have a beer with us, maybe a little dinner. Just us guys hanging out talking about guy stuff."

"And that's supposed to make me want to go?"

"Ok, we could talk about girl stuff if you want."

Daniel relented. He was just going back to his lonely apartment.

The guys found a nice quiet pub in town and took a table in the corner. Not much of a crowd on a Friday night and that was exactly how they liked it. They each ordered a beer and hamburgers with fries then settled in for a 'guys night out'.

Teal'c started the conversation. "Daniel Jackson, you are dating Doctor Fraiser, are you not?" He added the raised eyebrow for emphasis.

"Wow, Teal'c, just cut to the chase." Daniel glared at Jack, figuring he had something to do with this.

Jack squirmed a little under Daniel's scrutiny, which only validated his theory. Daniel looked back at Teal'c "Janet and I went to a concert together last weekend, that's all."

"And for breakfast the next morning, so I hear" Jack added with a little too much confidence.

"I was helping Cassie with her homework." Daniel was not going to let this go any further.

Jack's turn. "Yeah, but Cassie had a date that afternoon, Carter said you were still there after Cassie got home."

"I can't believe I'm having this conversation," Daniel huffed as he sat back in his chair "...don't you have anything better to do with Sam than discuss my personal life?"

Jack thought of several answers to that question, but chose a more appropriate response "C'mon Daniel, we think it's great, you guys are great together."

"I agree with O'Neill, you have seemed happier this last week."

Daniel finally gave in and smiled "Yeah, Teal'c, I guess I have."

"So I take it you'll being see more of her?" Jack pushed it a little further with Daniel's newfound openness.

"Tomorrow night. Now can we talk about something else?"

"What are you guys doing tomorrow?" Jack pushed even farther.

"Why are you so curious?"

Jack shrugged, "Humor me Daniel, I'm a lonely man, let me live vicariously through you."

"If you must know, we're having dinner at her house." He said flatly, trying to diffuse the conversation and where it knew it was headed.

"Hanging out with Cassie too."

"Ah. No. Cassie's staying at a friend's." Daniel cringed, he knew he shouldn't have offered that bit of info.

Jack grinned really big and Daniel didn't miss the insinuation.

"No, Jack, it's not like that."

"Sure." Jack was trying to hold back his grin.

"I can't believe I'm having this conversation with you."

"You said that already"

"Well, I think it's worth repeating."

The food arrived and Daniel thought that would be the end of the conversation.

He was wrong.

Jack hadn't found the answers he was looking for so he forged ahead with a different line of questioning.

"Ya know, Daniel, Janet's pretty great...you did good."

Daniel softened at the acknowledgment, Jack was right, "Yeah, I did, didn't I?"

"The best."

"Yeah."

"How long have you been in love with Doctor Fraiser?" Teal'c cut to the chase again.

"Geez, Teal'c your just full of awkward questions tonight."

"I am sorry Daniel Jackson, I am just curious to learn more about this part of your culture."

Jack looked at Daniel "They don't do a lot of dating on Chulak, I'm thinkin'"

Daniel swirled his beer in the glass and then took a long slow sip, contemplating his answer. "I don't know
if I'm in love with her, I mean we just started dating."

"So, when I see you staring at her for a long time, that is not because you are in love with her?" Teal'c continued in his forthrightness.

"I don't stare." Daniel protested, but not convincingly.

"Oh, c'mon Daniel, even I notice the stares. You're not fooling anyone. You're in love with her, I can see
it"

Daniel sighed, defeated. "Yeah, I guess you're right."

Jack sat back and grinned as he took a sip of his beer. Mission accomplished.

Sam hurried into her house as she heard the phone ringing, partly wondering who would be calling her at this late hour.

"Hello"

"Carter"

"Sir"

"You sound out of breath, you ok?"

"Just running for the phone"

"Well, I just thought you'd like to know, your little plan worked."

"So, Teal'c was successful?"

"Yep, how did it go with Doc?"

"Mission accomplished."

"You did good, Major."

"You too, Colonel."

"'Night"

"Goodnight, sir"

*

The ringing phone startled Janet as she made her way to her bedroom. She sat on the bed and picked up the phone, knowing who would be at the other end.

"Hello"

"Hey. How are you?"

"Good, I'm glad you called." She couldn't stop grinning.

"I just wanted to say goodnight and see how your evening was with Sam."

Janet lay back on her bed, tired from the evening but also relaxing at the sound of Daniel's voice. "Interesting."

"Sounds like my evening with Jack and Teal'c."

"I learned about the young rebellious Sam Carter."

"She tell you that story about her Dad catching her?"

"Yeah, how did you know?"

"P3X 595 was a very revealing mission, to say the least. She doesn't know we know."

"The Colonel knows?"

"Oh yeah, he's just waiting for the right moment to share that bit of info with her."

Janet laughed but then her tone grew serious, "You know, Daniel, we're pretty lucky."

"Yeah, no regulations."

"Right...and no excuses."

"None."

They were quiet for a few seconds, realizing all that they had to be thankful for and a little of what they feared.

Janet broke the silence. "So, I'll see you tomorrow night." She said quietly.

"Wouldn't miss it, there are a few things I need to tell you."

She smiled and wished Daniel could see the warmth in her eyes that she felt for him. But it came out in her soft lilting voice "There are a few things I need to tell you too."

They said their goodnights and each went to bed knowing a little more of what the future would hold.
