Daniel watched worriedly as Janet disappeared off into the bathroom for
what seemed like the umpteenth time that night. She said it was just a
bug…and she was the doctor, so theoretically she was right and he
should believe her. She had been this way a lot lately…he couldn’t
shake off the feeling that there was something she wasn’t telling him,
but for now he would trust her to tell him when she needed to.
She re-entered the room, a slightly sheepish grin on her face. “Sorry…I
guess popcorn wasn’t such a great idea…”
“Nothing to be sorry for,” Daniel replied with a grin, reopening his
arms so she could lean on him again.
“But I’m ruining the movie!” she protested half-heartedly, settling
into his arms as he hit the play button, allowing George Clooney’s face
to relax out of the grin it had been frozen in.
“I’m more worried about you,” Daniel whispered, not knowing if he
wanted her to hear that or not. She heard, but couldn’t come up with an
answer, so Daniel decided she hadn’t heard and turned his attention
back to the television.
**********
Janet stirred slightly as Daniel placed her on the bed as gently as he
could. Opening sleepy eyes, she peered up at Daniel for a few seconds
as he straightened up and smiled down at her.
“Hey,” she said, her sleep-fogged brain finally discerning where she
was.
“Hey, sleepyhead,” Daniel replied, grinning. “You fell asleep on me, so
I figured a bed would be more comfortable…”
“Thanks, though you were pretty comfortable too.“ Janet smiled, pulling
the covers up around herself.
“Well…I guess I should go,” Daniel said, looking slightly reluctant to
do so.
“Don’t I get a goodnight kiss?” Janet asked with a pout, ignoring the
clock that proclaimed brightly that was past three in the morning.
Daniel grinned at that and leaned down for a gentle kiss. Janet wrapped
her arms around her neck. “Stay?” she whispered into his ear after
enjoying the kiss for a while.
Daniel looked quite surprised by this, and blinked at her confusedly.
“I don’t know if I should…”
“Stay,” Janet repeated, not relinquishing her hold on his neck.
“Well…if you say so…” he replied, still sounding a bit reluctant.
“I say so,” Janet replied firmly, letting go and rolling over so he
could get in. He kicked his shoes off after one last moment of
indecision, then climbed in, automatically opening his arms as she
moved closer to him and snuggled her head into his chest.
“’Night,” she said as sleep claimed her again.
“’Night, Angel,” Daniel replied, wrapping his arms tightly around her
as he wondered, not for the first time, just why she stayed with him.
**********
Janet sipped at her coffee, still not out of bed for all that it was
nearly noon. Cassie was at a friend’s place, and had been since noon
the day before. Janet wasn’t expecting her back until about
dinner-time, since she and her friends were planning to go to the mall
for the afternoon. Daniel had left a few minutes earlier after getting
her some coffee. He had some things to do on the base that the General
wanted done, so Janet had had to let him go, much as she wanted him to
stay longer.
Janet’s stomach fluttered as she remembered why she had leave for
today. General Hammond had been very kind and had given her a couple of
days off without even asking why, and she silently thanked him once
again for saving her the trouble of having the explain to the General.
The reason was her first ultrasound.
She knew these things happened every day, to thousands of women, but
never to her.
She fingered the rim of her coffee mug, then suddenly and quickly
jumped out of bed. There was no point thinking about it too much, she
would just have to keep herself busy until it was time to leave for the
Academy Hospital.
**********
“Bye, Louise!” Cassie called from the porch steps. “Thanks for the ride
home!” She waved, then grabbed her pillow and bags from the steps and
pushed the door handle down with her foot so she could get inside,
while trying hard not to drop everything. “Mom! I’m home!”
“I’m in the kitchen, Cass, honey!” Janet called back. “Come in here
would you?”
“Aww, Mom! I’m not going to get another lecture, am I?” Cassie called
back after a sigh. She would much rather be getting on the internet and
chatting than pretending to listen to her Mom yell.
“No, you’re not, promise, but this is kinda important!” Janet replied,
knowing full well what Cassie would rather be doing. “And put your
things in your room first, not in the middle of the living room where I
know you just dumped them!”
“No, I didn’t,” Cassie replied quickly, grabbing her things again from
the living room floor. She headed up the stairs, wondering what her Mom
wanted to talk to her about –this- time. She –had- promised not to
lecture…but she has also promised not to nag about Cass and Dominic,
and –that- hadn’t happened…
Making her way back downstairs, she schooled her face into bored
indifference, then entered the kitchen. “How long will this take?”
“Not too long,” Janet reassured her, watching Cassie carefully. “I went
to the doctor’s today.”
“There’s nothing wrong with you, is there?” Cassie immediately asked,
her face now showing anxiety. “You’ve been kinda sick lately…”
“No, no, I’m fine,” Janet said reassuringly. “Well…it’s nothing that
won’t go away in about six months, anyway…”
Realisation dawned on Cassie’s face as she slowly digested this.
“Mom…are you…pregnant?” Janet just nodded silently, waiting for a
reaction anxiously. “Wow…this is…wow!” Cassie said, her face full of
mixed emotions as she tried to sort out what she thought of this.
Janet watched for a few minutes to give Cassie a moment to think.
“Cass? Are you ok with this?” she then asked quietly as Cassie stared
incredulously at her.
“Yeah, of course I’m ok with this!” Cassie grinned, half-running over
and given Janet a big hug. “It’s just kind of…unexpected, that’s all!
But you’ve been so happy lately, with Daniel…I’m happy for you!” Cassie
grinned.
“Cassie,” Janet said sharply. “Daniel doesn’t know yet.”
“Oh…” Cassie’s face fell and she pulled back from the hug a bit. “But
you’re going to tell him…right?”
“Of course,” Janet replied, not too sure about this, but sounding
confident for Cassie’s sake. “I just need to find the right time, so
don’t tell him, ok?”
“Ok,” Cassie replied with a grin, hugging Janet tightly again. “Oh…”
she pulled back, now touching Janet lightly as though she thought Janet
might break. “I shouldn’t hug you so tightly…”
“It’s ok, you won’t hurt me or the baby,” Janet reassured, smiling at
Cassie.
“So this is why you’ve been so sick lately?” Cassie asked.
“Yup…morning sickness, though it seems to be morning, afternoon,
evening and night sickness,” Janet replied with a slight laugh. “Not at
all fun, I can assure you! Would you like to see a picture of your new
brother or sister?”
“Yeah!” Cassie replied instantly, eyes sparkling, and Janet pulled out
of the hug with a laugh, glad that Cassie was definitely ok with this.
Walking over to the table, she reached into a silver gift bag and
pulled out a silver-framed photo.
“I had this taken at the ultrasound today,” she said with a soft smile,
passing it over to Cassie who looked at it with wide eyes.
“It’s so small,” Cassie said with obvious delight, looking from Janet’s
still-flat stomach and back to the picture again. “I need to tell
Louise! Oh, I can tell Louise, can’t I?”
“Yeah sure.” Janet smiled. “Just not Daniel.”
“Anyone but Daniel…gotcha!” Cassie grinned, handing Janet the photo
back and running upstairs to call Louise.
Janet sank into one of the kitchen chairs, immensely relieved that this
had gone so well. With yet another loving glance at the photo, she went
and placed it on the mantelpiece amongst the photos of her, Cassie,
Daniel and the rest of SG-1…after all, it was part of the family now.
