SUMMARY: Janet is deceased in our reality, but what happens when Janet from another reality seeks refuge in our world.
DISCLAIMER: Stargate SG-1 and its characters do not belong to me.
AUTHOR'S NOTES: I am a huge Janet/Daniel shipper and I'm not liking this whole 'Heroes' thing with her character. Anyway, I wrote this story because I believe she should come back, one way or another, and Daniel should have another chance to make up for not being with her sooner. Well I hope you all enjoy "Janet's Return."
Walking down the dark halls of the SGC was different now. The grief and
mourning of a friend, soldier, and mother seemed to be contagious among the
SGC personnel. Everyone knew her how brave, honest, kind, funny, and
loving she was. But, no one knew her best than her best friends, those
belonging to SG-1.
Major Carter walked down those dark halls, folders in her hands to attend
the next briefing. She has custody over Cassandra now, like she always
wanted, but never to happen in such circumstances.
As she walked to the briefing room, she passed by the infirmary knowing
that her best friend will not pass by and greet her. Instead, she saw a
new doctor getting accustomed to the new surrounding. Sam sighed and kept
going her way.
Although Sam was distraught for the last couple of days, she was worried
especially for Daniel. She knew how much he cared for her how much he
still cares for her. He's probably beating himself up for not telling her
how much he did care. Sam decided to go to his office to check up on him.
She came upon his door and gently knocked on the door. She heard a small
'come in' and moved inside.
"Daniel, you okay?" she asked as she poked her head through.
"Yeah I'm okay, why wouldn't I be?" he replied. He was sitting by his desk
looking through some books and writing in his notebook.
"No reason, I just want to remind you that we have a briefing," she said
knowing that he was hurting, badly.
"Okay, I'll be there. You can go ahead," he said not looking up from his
desk.
"Okay I'll see you," she said and she left. She closed the door behind her
and went on her way.

The briefing was uneventful and pretty quite. Colonel O'Neill, for the
first time, didn't say a word of sarcasm. Teal'c only nodded his head at
certain points to show that he was paying attention. General Hammond kept
his eyes on the presentation. Sam continued to talk techno-babble, while
Daniel looked at his notepad and tapped his pen on it.
When the briefing ended, everyone went back to their original positions.
Sam went back to Daniel's office. When she got there, she found out that
he wasn't there. She went to the Gate room, but he wasn't there either.
She asked the Colonel and Teal'c, but was unsuccessful.
She asked other SGC personnel and discovered that he left right after the
briefing. Knowing now where he is, she also left.

Sam drove to where she went every Saturday to play chess with Cass. She
parked near the house and saw Daniel's car.
She walked up to the door, placed her hand on the door knob, and discovered
that the door was left open.
Sam walked inside and saw that it was empty, due to the fact that all of
her things were put away and Cass took her things to Sam's place. She then
found Daniel sitting on the sofa, and his eyes showed a sign of pain. He
had appeared to be crying and in his hand he was holding a small black box.
Sam came closer, but Daniel interrupted the silence.
"You know, I was going to give this to her," he said holding out the small
black box to her.
Sam came close enough to take the small box from him. She opened it and
saw the most beautiful engagement ring. It sparkled as ray of lights
refracted through the glass.
"Daniel," she started but was suddenly interrupted.
"Sam, I regret not telling her so much. It feels like the person that I
love was taken away from me again," he said putting his face into his
hands.
Sam put the black box on the table and went to embrace Daniel. He's like a
brother to her and seeing him in this condition for a second time hurt her
also.
She sat there, embracing him, rocking him back and forth for the rest of
the day.
Weeks pass by and the SGC personnel looked livelier than before. The new
doctor was welcomed even though he was replacing the best there was.
Cassandra spent more time with all of SG-1 as they came over every now and
then to check up on her. Daniel, especially, came by Sam's more often to
comfort Cass and talk with her.
Daniel began to act more like himself lately, and Jack picked up the habit
of making sarcastic remarks. Teal'c was.......well........Teal'c. He still nodded
his head and replied in that monotonous tone of his. Sam was back to
normal, but would go back into mourning mode when a former a SGC member
will come through the gate to visit.

"Sir, incoming traveler, it's Jonas Quinn'
"Open the iris," said General Hammond as he started to join SG-1 who were
moving to the Gate room.
"General Hammond, it's good to see you," called out Jonas as he walked down
the ramp.
"It's good to see you too son," he said as he came closer to shake his
hand.
"Where's SG-1?' he asked wanting to say hello to his best friends.
"Son, I think you should come with me," said General Hammond and directed
Jonas to his office. Once there, General Hammond told him to take a seat
and then he sat down himself letting out a sigh.
"Is something wrong sir?" he asked his impatience level growing a bit.
"This may come as a shock to you, but Doctor Janet Frasier passed away
about four weeks ago," he said folding his hands on his desk.
"What?' he said not believing what he just heard, "How? Why? What about
Cassandra?" he continued as hundreds of questions popped into his head.
General Hammond told him the situation about a film crew that arrived to
document the work of the SGC and while off-world Janet lost her life to a
Jaffa blast. Jonas couldn't believe his ears his good friend Janet
Frasier was gone.
"What of the Colonel and the others?" he asked wondering if the others met
the same fate as the Doctor.
"They are all fine, just trying to recover from what happened. It wasn't
until last week that Jack finally started being his old sarcastic self
again," he added making Jonas smile a bit.
"How about Daniel? I mean, he must be really going through a hard time."
"He and Cassandra were hit the hardest."
"And Cass where is she staying?" he inquired since they had become good
friends while his temporary stay on Earth.
"She's in the custody of Major Carter now."
"Are SG-1 on the base?"
"No, I gave them down-time. I'll give you permission to leave the base and
be escorted to any of them if you would like."
"Yes please, I want to see how they're doing and if my visit can cheer them
up a bit."
"I agree, an old friend will do them good right about now."

Jonas was escorted, like General had suggested, to Sam's house. As he
reached the door, he hesitated, not knowing how to confront Sam and
Cassandra after what he just found out.
He knocked on the door and Sam opened it.
"Jonas! Oh my gosh, what are you doing here?" she said as she grabbed him
into a hug.
"Oh not much, you know just traveling from planet to planet just to see my
friends," he said rubbing his hand on her back for friendly comfort.
"I'm glad to see after what happened with--" she stopped a mid sentence
now knowing if Jonas had known what had happened to Janet.
"I know,' he said in a whisper as he entered and was taken to the living
room. Cass was there watching television she looked up from the TV,
returned her gaze back to its original position, and then sharply looked
back to Sam and her guest realizing that it was Jonas.
"Jonas!" she called out and quickly jumped out of her seat to hug him. She
lingered in his embrace for a little longer and then separated.
"How are you Cass?" he asked lifting her chin up with his hand so that
their eyes met.
"I'm okay," she said and he knew that she was because her eyes revealed the
truth. They let go of each other and all three sat down around the couch.
"Jonas do you want anything to drink or eat?'" asked Sam knowing that he
came a long way.
"Just a soda, I miss it," he said making Sam and Cass laugh.
"So Jonas how's everything in Kelowna,' Sam asked from the kitchen.
"Everything's okay, I miss traveling though," he said as Sam came back with
a can of soda for him.
"Jonas how long are you staying?" asked Cassie.
"Well I didn't bring a weeks-worth of clothes for nothing," he said
bringing them a smile to their faces.
At that moment, the doorbell rang and Sam stood up to get it. A couple of
seconds later, Sam came back with Jack by her side.
"Colonel," said Jonas as he stood up to shake his hand, "how's everything?"
he asked and Jack gave his hand out to shake it.
"Just peachy," said Jack with a slight smile on his face, "I called Hammond
and he told me that you were here, so I decided to come by. Daniel should
be right behind," he said and at that moment Daniel stepped into the living
room.
"Daniel," called out Jonas and shook hands with him.
"Hey Jonas, how are you doing?" he said as he, Jack, and Sam moved to the
sofa.
"Oh not much has happened since the last time we met," he said taking a sip
from his soda, "Where's Teal'c?" he asked as Cassandra left the room.
"Oh he's off-world visiting his son," Sam answered.
"Oh I'll probably see him when I leave," he said in a matter-of-factly
tone.
"Until then....." Cassie said as she came back from her departure with board
games stacked upon her hands, "Let's have some fun."
And for the rest of the day, they played board games and watched TV.

AREA 51
The room was dark and the only hint of light came from the security alarm systems. There were many artifacts from past missions to other planets through the Stargate. One artifact in particular was standing by the wall.
All of a sudden, it seemed as the mirror ‘turned on’ and a room, similar to that of SGC, appeared. There were Jaffa blasts zooming from one corner to another and a woman was running towards the mirror with all her might.
She came close, paused, touched the mirror with the tip of her fingers, and appeared into the alarm infested room. She took in air for she was short of breath from running. Her eyes were closed as she was tried to grasp what had happened to her and her friends for the last couple of days. Without looking she moved her leg and touched the red beam causing the alarm to go off.
Men who were heavily armed came swarming into the room to discover a familiar face with her hands above her head.

General Hammond was in his office when a soldier knocked on the door and was given permission to come in.
“General Hammond, sir, there’s been a breach,” he said.
“What’s the situation?” asked General Hammond standing up from his desk.
“It’s Area 51, sir. Someone was caught inside of the Artifacts facility,” he said knowing that General Hammond was going to ask who did it.
“Who did it, Major?” he asked as the soldier suspected. He hesitate a drop of sweat coming down the side of his face.
“Doctor Janet Frasier, sir”
“What!?” said General Hammond not believing what he just heard.
“Doctor Janet Frasier, sir. It appears that she came through the artifact that Dr. Jackson had discovered on P35233,” replied the Major.
“Where is she?” he asked.
“She’s locked in a holding cell for not, sir, but she requests to see only one person.”
“And who’s that?”
“Dr. Daniel Jackson, sir.”

Ring. Ring.
Daniel was watching television when he heard his phone ring far off in the other side of the room.
“Why?” he mumbled to himself as he lazily stood from the sofa, turned off the TV, and walked to the phone reluctantly.
“Hello,” he said sounding a bit interested in who was on the other line.
“Dr. Jackson,” sounded a serious voice.
“This is he,” he said quite curiously and he paid closely to what the other man was saying.
“You are needed urgently at Cheyenne Mountain. General Hammond requests your presence,” he said and hung up.
Daniel, not knowing what could be so urgent that he is needed, went to dress up and get ready to go to the SGC.

Once Daniel was inside the mountain, Daniel went to General Hammond’s office to see what the matter was. He knocked on the door and was granted permission to come in.
“General, sir, you wanted to--,” he said as he came in and saw the unexpected. Right in front of him he saw the same woman who died in his arms no less that a month ago.
“Daniel,” she whispered her eyes showing a hint of pain. She came closer, but Daniel knew that this was not the Janet he knew, so he took a couple of steps back from her.
“Dr. Jackson, please sit down,” said General Hammond as he interrupted the odd silence that followed.
Daniel did as he was told and Janet just kept her eyes on him and he did the same.
“General Hammond, will you care to explain,” said Daniel looking confused.
“This here is Doctor Janet Frasier from another alternate reality. Approximately at eleven hundred hours, she appeared in Area 51 claiming that she had come through the artifact that you discovered in P35233. She seeks refuge from the world she did live in. According to her, her Earth is already in ruins destroyed by the Goa’uld. Everyone she knew and cared for is dead—,”
“Including you Daniel,” she said eyes beginning to tear.
“Hence, why we are considering the fact of whether she should stay or not,” concluded General Hammond.
There was a long pause and Daniel seemed to be in his own world. It was then Janet that interrupted the awkward silence.
“May I ask whether the other actual Janet Frasier from this reality here?”
“She’s dead,” answered Daniel who was still not looking at anything in particular.
“General Hammond, if you don’t want me here, I’ll just look for another reality that will take me in. That’s all I ask,” she said as she wiped a small tear that was coming down her cheek.
The General stood from his chair and went to an airman outside of his office.
“Airman, please take Dr. Frasier to her provided quarters,” he said and the Airman came in to escort Janet back to her room. She stood up, looked at Daniel in the eyes, and left with her escort.
General Hammond closed the door and went back to his desk.
“Daniel, I understand that this is overwhelming right now but--,” he started to say but was interrupted.
“Yes, General, you could say that. I saw Janet die in my arms off-world. The woman that was just here is not her. She’s from another reality; she has another life,” he finished.
“I understand that it is not the same Janet, but we have to consider the fact that she has no life to live back in the reality where she came from. If we send her back, we are sending her to her death, and I for one am not going to allow it,” he said shutting a folder that was open on his desk.
“So you’re saying that she’s staying,” Daniel replied not believing what he just heard.
“Yes, Dr. Jackson, she is staying.”

Sam was at home when she was called to come to the SGC. On her way there, she believed that she was being called to deal with an off-world device that one of the SG teams had brought back through the Gate.
One in the base, Janet went to the scientists in the lab, but they told her that General Hammond wanted to see her. So she went to the upper levels to his office.
She knocked on the door and waited to be called in.
“General, sir, you wanted to see me,” said Sam as she came in.
“Yes Major Carter, please sit,” he said hoping that Sam will not react in the same way that Daniel did.

Janet was sitting on her bed and the memories of her life back in the other reality came flooding back to her. She saw herself, Cassandra, and Daniel at the park during winter and they were snowball fighting. Another memory consisted of Jack and her best friend Sam teaming with Cassandra in order to bring her and Daniel together.
She let out a small laugh and then tears started to come down her face. She played around with her hair since it was shoulder length. All of a sudden she heard a knock on the door.
“Come in,” she said trying to wipe the tears away. The door slowly opened and then a familiar face appeared behind the door.
“Sam!” Janet called out as she jumped from her bed.
“Hey Janet,” she replied not knowing what to say because obviously this Janet was not the same Janet she knew.
“I know this is weird for you, but I’m still Janet,” she said trying to convince her that although she was from another reality, she was in many ways the same as the deceased Janet.
“It is weird to tell you the truth,” she said scratching the back of her head and giving her a big smile.
“Daniel thinks so too,” she said turning away and went back to her original position on the bed. Sam that Daniel and Janet in the other reality were really close in her reality. She came closer and sat next to her on the bed.
“Daniel and all of us suffered a great loss no less than a month ago, Jan. You have to understand that it was really hard on him, considering the fact that he wanted to have the same relations you had in your reality,” she said and patted her on the back.
“I know how he feels though,” she replied and looked at Sam with teary eyes.
“What happened?” Sam asked wanting to know what happened in her world that made her come this far.
“The Goa’uld invaded Earth in a matter of days. We had no way of protecting ourselves and the whole world went into chaos. I lost everyone,” she said and she began to cry, “Sam, you, Jack, Cass, Daniel, and I were in Cheyenne Mountain when the Goa’uld had come. It was only a matter of time when they took hold of the SGC. I had to go get something in my lab and told everyone that I would be right back because we were preparing to go through the Gate. Daniel came running after me and I didn’t notice. The Jaffa soldiers were coming down the hall and Daniel came in front of me in order to stop a blast that was fired to hit me. He died protecting me and I didn’t even get to say goodbye. I couldn’t stay there so I ran back to the Gate, but I saw that the Gate room was invaded with an army of Jaffa soldiers holding their staff weapons at you and the others. They shot all of you in front of my very eyes,” she said trying to wipe all the tears that were coming down her face, “I had to think fast. Obviously I couldn’t go through the Gate so I had no choice but to use the mirror located in one of the lab rooms. That’s how I came here. But Sam, if it weren’t for me trying to get something in my lab, Daniel would not have died and we would have gone through the Gate. It’s all my fault,” she finally finished, waterfalls coming down her face.
Sam was speechless; she didn’t know what to say. She moved closer and held Janet in her arms, knowing that she need comfort after everything she went through. Finally she had the courage to say something.
“Janet, it’s not your fault. You have the Goa’uld to blame,” she said and Janet continued to sob in Sam’s arms until she finally fell asleep.

Later on when Janet awoke, Sam was there reading a magazine. They continued to talk as if they were long lost friends.
Janet was curious and wanted to ask, “So, Sam. How are you and Jack?”
“Umm, well the Colonel and I are doing fine, Jan. Why?”
“The Colonel?” said Janet curiously, “Don’t you refer to him as Jack?”
“Janet, by any chance in your reality were ‘Jack’ and I together?” asked Sam wanting to know if that was why Janet was asking about both of them.
“Yeah, you two were married.”
“Let me guess, I wasn’t in the military and I was just working in the Stargate Program,” replied Sam guessing that that was the reality just like the others she had experienced.
“Actually, you were in the military and so was Jack. You two couldn’t be together at first, but the President granted you permission,” she finished.
“Really?” said Sam looking surprised.
“So you and Jack aren’t together,”
“No we’re not, actually”
“But you must have feelings for him,”
“Uhh, let’s not go into that right now,” said Sam starting to blush.
“Right. Anyway, how’s Cassandra?”
“Cassie is doing great. She’s continuing to do well in her school work. She’s strong,”
“That’s good,”
“So Jan, are you a doctor in your reality?”
“Yes I am. I’m guessing Janet over here was one too?”
“Yes she was. So you and Daniel had a thing?”
“Yeah we were going out.”
“Did you love him?”
“Yes, it hurt so much when I saw Daniel walk into the General’s office,” she said and she started to cry again.
“I’m sorry Janet,”
“No it’s okay; I just want to be alone right now, if you don’t mind.”
“No, no, I’ll be outside if you need me.”
“Okay,” Janet replied and lay down on the bed once more to let her emotions flow out of her.

Sam had to do something. She just couldn’t see Janet like this, all broken down. She went to Daniel’s office to see if he was in there. She knocked, didn’t hear anything, but decided to go in anyway.
“You know when no body says ‘Come in’ it’s for a very good reason,” said Daniel who was sitting behind his desk.
“Daniel don’t be such an ass,” said Sam as she came in to the dark room and turned on the lights.
“Sam I’m not in the mood,” he said in all honesty.
“Understood, but Daniel--,”
“But Daniel nothing. I know what you’re going to say,” he said scratching his eyes.
“Good, saves me the trouble then,” she replied.
“Okay, I didn’t know what you were going to say,”
“Daniel, Janet--,”
“I knew it, I knew it,”
“Daniel just listen to me,”
“What?”
“I know that you had feelings for Janet and you were together,” he was going to say something but Sam stopped by giving him a death look.
“And I understand that this Janet is not the same one as the one we knew, but we can’t just reject her because of what happened,”
“Sam, I want to talk to her, believe me I really do. But to tell you the truth, I have no idea what to tell her. What, do you want me to walk up to her and tell her ‘hey Janet, since the other Janet I knew died, can I tell you I love you instead?’”
“Daniel that’s not what I’m saying,”
“Sam, I love Janet but I really don’t know what to do, where to begin, or even how to act around her,” he finished.
“Just be yourself,” was the only thing that Sam said and she left the room.
Be myself, thought Daniel, that’s all: Just be myself.
* ** * ** * ** * ** * ** * ** * ** * ** * ** * ** * ** * ** * ** * ** * ** * ** * ** * ** * ** * **
Janet was eating the food that the Sgt. had brought her from the Commissary.
Not bad, she thought, it’s good to finally eat something.
While she was eating, she heard a knock on the door. Who could it be now? she asked herself.
“Come in,” she said and wiped her mouth on the napkin.
The person she least expected to see came through the door and Janet started to fiddle around with her hands.
“Hey,” he said closing the door behind him.
“Hi,” she said giving him a small smile.
“I just wanted to see how you were doing,”
“I’m doing okay; better than I expected, really,” and gave him a bigger smile.
“That’s good. Listen, about earlier—,”
“It’s okay, don’t worry about it. I mean I should have expected the reactions, especially from you,” she said and continued to play around with her hands.
“You’re nervous,” he said a small smile on his face.
“Other than the fact that I’m looking down at the floor and I’m answering in one syllable words, what else gave me away?”
“You’re playing with your hands,” he said pointing at her hands.
“Oh,” she said and let out a laugh.
“I was always good at making you...her...well you laugh,” he said scratching the back of his head.
“Yes you were,” she said referring to the Daniel in her reality.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Shoot,” she replied curiously.
“General Hammond told me that you’re married, was it to me?”
“Were, yes I was,” and she brought up her hand to show him the ring on her finger.
“Can I see it?” he said coming a bit closer.
“Okay,” and she took if off and placed it on his hand.
“It’s the exact same ring,” he said sounding amazed.
“What do you mean?” asked Janet and decided to sit down on the bed.
“I was going to propose to Janet in this reality and the ring that I was going to give her was this one,” he said giving her back the ring.
“Our realities aren’t that different,” she said placing her ring back.
“What is different though?” he said grabbing a chair from the table and placed it in front of her.
“Well from what Sam told me, in this world, she and Jack aren’t together like they were in my reality,”
“Really? Do you know that we’ve encountered other realities and they’ve also have Sam and Jack as partners or fiancés, so far this is the only one that they haven’t gotten together,”
“It’s a shame really. I mean, they look great together. I remember when Jack was having a tough time finding the right engagement and he came to me for help,” she said laughing remembering the memories.
“Did you have Cassie in your world?” he asked curiously.
“Yes I did. I miss her a lot,” she said as she continued to play around with her hands.
“I’m sorry,” he replied remembering that she must have lost everyone.
“Don’t be,” she said with a small smile, “our realities are pretty much the same aren’t they?”
“Yeah they are,” and he smiled.
“Daniel can you do me a favor?” she asked.
“Anything”
“Can you ask General Hammond if I can see the surface for just a couple of minutes, I mean I haven’t seen daylight for a while,”
“Umm, yeah I’ll go ask him,” he said getting up.
“Thank you,” she said trying to hold back her tears. Daniel noticed the pain she must be going through and came a few steps closer in her direction.
“Come here,” he whispered and Janet came closer and came into his embrace. She wrapped her small arms around his waist and Daniel rested his head on hers.
He held her tight not wanting to let her go, believing that if he did, he might loose her all over again.
