AUTHOR'S NOTES: This one hasn't been beta'd it has been hammering at me for the past couple of days & not even Renee knew about this one (um, Surprise, Rae!)
All you left with me was diamonds
When all I gave you was my heart
"I...I don't know what to say," his voice was bewildered but that was understandable. What else could he say upon hearing that Janet was leaving him.
In so many ways there was no one to blame
We just drifted apart
"I think Goodbye is all we can say," Janet said softly. "We belong in two different worlds."
She was so wrong! Daniel wanted to scream, to tell her how wrong she was but everytime he opened his mouth the words simply wouldn't come. Instead he stood before her with his mouth opening and closing as he tried to put his feelings into words. With a sad smile Janet rose up on her tiptoes and lightly kissed him. "Good Bye, Daniel."
I couldn't speak 'cause you were kissing me
I couldn't breath in case you'd go and leave
"No, wait -," he pulled her back to him covering her lips with his own. The featherlite kiss she'd given him only made him yearn for more. His heart shouted for joy when her arms went around his neck and her fingers tangled in the short hair at the nape of his neck. The kiss drug on and Daniel never wanted it to end. If it ended she would leave him. She would go away and he would be alone again.
I didn't want to talk, afriad I'd break the spell
I didn't want to move, it wasn't hard to tell
But the kiss did end, and as she wiped a tear from her cheek Janet touched his face. "Goodbye." She picked up her briefcase and walked away. The door at the gate closed and Daniel stared out the window as her plane pulled away from the terminal. Janet was gone.
And I still hear your voice calling in the night
I can feel you breathe, your heartbeat close to mine
But with one more tear, I know for sure
My heart will overflow - didn't we try?
He woke up curled around her pillow. In his mind he could hear a peal of delighted laughter teasing him for being sentimental. With a sigh he rolled onto his back and ground the palms of his hands into his eyes. The same dream night after night assualted the sense of calm he projected during the day. He'd handled Janet's transfer as best he could, and during the day no one could see his suffering. But at night he saw her everywhere. Why hadn't he gone with her? She'd asked him to, but he was needed at Cheyenne Mountain. Janet could no more turn down the transfer and the early promotion that came with it than he could leave his work at the SGC. But couldn't they have worked something out?
You haven't hurt until your love's in doubt
You haven't lived until you've done without
When you can't bear the looks from those understanding eyes
Your heart's had enough, you just want to run and hide
She'd understood his decision to stay. He understood her decision to go. But neither of them could truly accept it. They'd left each other over a month before that final day at the Airport. Running from the love they shared in hopes that they would spare each other the pain. It hadn't worked.
I know I'm not the one you need
But I'll love you till I die
Sometimes the illusions
Are realer than the love inside
Her job was more important than her happiness. Serving her country and being a doctor was everything to Janet Fraser. The two years she'd spent with Daniel was more like a dream rather than the reality. Daniel didn't want to wake from the dream but reality had finally broken through and pulled Janet back to her duty. The Pentagon, the Joint Chiefs thought her talents would be better utilized in Washington. When she declined the transfer the first time around they offered the promotion to Lieutenant Colonel as well. Daniel hated it but he'd urged her to take the transfer. He could see the desire in her eyes and there was no way he could begrudge her her dreams. But God did he want her back.
And I still hear your voice calling in the night
I can feel you breathe, your heartbeat close to mine
But with one more tear, I know for sure
My heart will overflow - didn't we try?
He didn't go back to sleep that night. Throughout the next day Daniel moved mechanically through his duties. Mission reports and staff evaluations simply didn't hold his attention. Jack finally tried to break through the fog that surrounded him by praising the work of Wallace Budge, but Daniel simply gave a snort of derision and continued to mull over his thoughts. It was three in the afternoon when he finally took a deep breath and he picked up the phone dialing quickly.
"Fraser."
"I love you," he said immediately.
"Daniel?" Was it his imagination or did her voice catch?
He swallowed nervously then said, "I love you, Janet. I don't care what we have to do, I want to be with you. I'm coming to Washington, will you meet me?"
She was silent for a moment then he was sure he heard a muffled sob. "Yes, yes Daniel, I'll meet you. I love you too."
-The End (And they lived Happily Ever After, dammit!) :)
