Daniel pulled away but left his hand resting against Janet's cheek. His
lips curved into a smile before he could think about it. He opened his
mouth, wanting to say something, but no words came to mind.
Janet appeared to feel the same way, as she silently twined her arms
around his neck. They stood like that for several moments, linked and
quiet.
They were interrupted by a call of "Mom? Who was there?" Before Daniel and
Janet could disentangle themselves, Cassie skidded into the front hall.
Daniel blushed as the teenager's eyes widened. "Oh," she said, sounding
choked. "I'll, um… yeah." She practically ran away.
Janet sighed and pulled her arms back from Daniel. "I'm sorry. I should go
talk to her." She took a step away.
"Wait." Daniel caught her hand. "What are you going to tell her? What are
we now, Janet?"
She licked her lips. "I'm not sure… what's the appropriate word?" She
shrugged. "I just… want to be with you."
Daniel nodded slowly. "That sounds about right. Are you busy tonight? Do
you want to get dinner or something?"
"Umm… yeah. Yeah, I do, but I really need to talk to Cass first. Wait in
the living room, okay? Hopefully it won't take too long." At that, Janet
rushed off after her daughter.
Daniel suppressed an urge to whistle as he walked into the living room.
She wanted to be with him.
He couldn't think of anything more beautiful.
