Daniel had forgotten what it felt like to be in love.
He'd forgotten how much brighter the world appeared, how appealing optimism was. He'd forgotten how thrilling it was just to be in the same room, the same building -hell, the same continent as the one he loved. The joy of love flooded into him, energized him.
Why had he been opposed to this, again?
Oh. Right. The pain of love ending was always impossible to remember, to anticipate, in the beginning stages of love. Daniel knew that he was seeing through rose-coloured glasses and that they never lasted forever.
That knowledge only made him want to cling to this sensation for as long as he could manage it. He'd fallen into the habit of thinking of the universe as a bad place filled with bad things, and it was refreshing to suddenly have his eyes opened to all of the good.
That whole turnaround of perspective was mere minutes old, and those minutes spent alone. When Janet walked back into the room, Daniel found himself unable to remember any of the bad things the universe held.
She came over and lightly touched his hand, and the slight skin-on-skin contact felt more right to Daniel than anything had for days. Weeks, months, years. Maybe his whole life. Daniel smiled broadly, and saw the smile, the joy, reflected on Janet's face.
"You said something about dinner?" Janet's voice was maybe a little breathless. Daniel felt a little breathless himself.
"Yeah. Are you hungry? What do you feel like? Are there any good restaurants close by?" Was he babbling? Quite possibly. Did he care, now, that was the real question.
"Oh, yeah. I'm sure we'll find something." Janet linked her arm through Daniel's. "I guess this is our first date."
"But not our last," Daniel promised.
"I'm going to hold you to that."
