“Sam?” Daniel called as he stuck his head in Sam’s empty office. He
shrugged and walked in anyway, figuring he’d wait for her. As he took a
seat at her desk, he accidentally bumped the mouse and suddenly the
screensaver on Sam’s computer disappeared. Daniel glanced at the screen
casually, the movement drawing his attention, then did a double take when he
caught sight of a couple of familiar words on the screen.
Sam must have been checking her email when she left, because that’s what was
left open. Daniel recognized it as one of those GTKY surveys that had been
going around base and couldn’t help but notice it was from Janet. Normally
Daniel would’ve ignored it, just like he’d ignored all the ones that had
showed up in his inbox, but he’d noticed his name in that first glance he’d
given the screen.
Looking closer he also noticed the email had only been sent to Sam instead
of a whole list of people like most of the GTKYs. By now he was intrigued
and continued to read.
A note at the top of the email read:
“Sam,
Here’s the “truthful” version. Hope you get a good laugh. Remember, I’m
expecting yours now :)
-Janet”
The following survey made Daniel blush, repeatedly. A good 90% of the
questions were in some way answered with his name, usually referring to some
portion of anatomy.
“Um…” Daniel mumbled as he finished reading. He was basically shocked. He
never had any idea Janet felt any of that about him. She’d always just been
his doctor and a friend. A good doctor and a good friend, yes, and she was
very beautiful and smart and kind… and where were these thoughts coming
from? Daniel wondered.
“Daniel?” Sam’s voice broke through his thoughts.
Daniel jumped slightly and emerged from his baffled daze. He realized he
was still starring at Sam’s computer screen, but thankfully he’d been
sitting there longer than he’d thought and the screensaver had reappeared.
“Uh, hi, Sam. I was just waiting for you,” Daniel said.
“Why were you starring at the spinning SGC logo?” Sam asked.
“It’s, uh, mesmerizing, don’t you think?”
“No. Are you sure you haven’t been working too hard?” Sam gave Daniel a
concerned look.
“No, I’m not sure, actually. Maybe I should go see Janet,” Daniel said,
standing and quickly departing the room, leaving a very confused Sam behind
him.
Daniel didn’t go to the infirmary though. He went back to his office, sat
at his computer and stared blindly at his own screensaver. It took him
about an hour of pondering, doubting, and discovering to formulate a plan.
Opening his email account, he pulled up the first GTKY he could find,
noticing briefly it was from General Hammond and his ‘best feeling in the
world’ was seeing Jack speechless.
Daniel quickly filled out the survey, then amended the address line so the
email would go to only one recipient. Hitting the send button, he smiled
contently and could finally go back to work.

Janet’s day in the infirmary had been slow, mostly because SG-1 hadn’t come
back from a mission. Having just completed her last report, she decided to
check her email. As Janet got to her last message in her inbox she nearly
fell off her chair. She quickly checked the sender, confirming that it was
in fact authentic and not some twisted practical joke by Sam, then she
finished reading. By the time she was done she couldn’t breathe.
Janet blinked twice, then jumped up and headed out of her office. She
hadn’t gotten more than two corridors when Sam stopped her.
“Hey Janet, did you check out Daniel?” Sam asked, innocently.
Janet tried vainly to keep from blushing. “Uh, no. Why?”
“He said he wasn’t feeling very well earlier and said he was going to see
you. I was just wondering if he was all right,” Sam explained.
“I’ll go check on him,” Janet replied. “In fact, I’ll go do that right
now.” She turned and rushed down a side corridor, becoming the second
person that day to leave a very confused Sam behind.

Daniel heard a knock on his door and called out, “Come in,” absently over
his shoulder as he continued working.
“Daniel?” Janet called as she entered his office. Peering around, she
quickly spotted him at his workbench and stopped dead in her tracks as he
looked up at her. It took just about all her mental discipline to clear her
mind of the unruly thoughts that seemed so prevalent. “I, uh, just came to
see if you were ok.”
“I’m fine,” Daniel said, smiling.
“Sam said you weren’t feeling well.”
“I’m much better thanks.” Daniel continued smiling as he stood up and
walked toward her.
“Are you absolutely sure?” Janet asked, not in the least convinced.
“Well there is one thing you could help me with…” Daniel began.
“Aha, I knew it! You’re hearing Machello again aren’t you?”
“No. I’m perfectly sane, I assure you.” Daniel grinned. “I just have a
small experiment I’d like to perform and I just need you to promise you
won’t hit me for it.”
“Hit you?” Janet asked, puzzled. “Why would I hit –“
She never finished the sentence as her lips became otherwise occupied.
Daniel had only meant to give her a brief kiss, to see if what he felt and
what he thought she felt was actually real. But as soon as their lips
touched, he found it absolutely impossible to pull away. Reaching up, his
hand cupped her face and he felt her wrap her arms around his neck as they
quickly moved from a friendly peck to mind-blowing, life-altering kiss.
“-you…” Janet finished when she could breathe again. “What was that?”
“If you’re not sure, then my experiment definitely failed.” Daniel scowled
slightly. He’d been hoping for a little better response than that.
“I’m gonna go call Dr. Mackenzie now,” Janet said, slowly backing up.
“Janet, I’m not insane. Believe me, that was probably the smartest, sanest
thing I’ve done in a long time.”
“Yesterday you barely gave me the time of day and today you’re sending me…”
Janet cleared her throat and tried for the umpteenth time that day not to
blush. “…interesting email and kissing me in your office. Now you’re
telling me I’m not supposed to get suspicious about your mental state?”
“Ok, you’re right. This may look a little out of the blue from your
perspective.” Daniel nodded. “But I have a confession to make.”
Janet looked at him apprehensively, not quite sure what he was getting at.
She was already observing him for signs of drug use, mind control, or
delirium.
“I accidentally read the email you sent Sam. The ‘Getting to Know You’
survey. You’re right, yesterday I didn’t really notice you that much, but
today I realized I should. I realized that you’re beautiful, wonderful
person and I’m a blind idiot and I haven’t a clue as to why you’d care about
me, but it struck me that I’d be extremely lucky if you did.” Daniel gave
her a pathetically hopeful look, praying she wasn’t going to get too mad.
Janet’s face gave away virtually nothing of what she was feeling inside,
making Daniel even more nervous. “So that’s why the experiment? To see if
I cared about you?” she questioned, still not giving away whether she was
angry or pleased by the sudden turn of events.
“Somewhat. More to see if my feelings for you were real.” Daniel shrugged
slightly, quite worried by this point.
“And are they?”
Daniel nodded. “Yours?”
Janet gave him a solemn look, creasing her brow slight in deep thought. “I
don’t know… It might take a little further experimentation.” She smiled
suggestively.
“I think I can do that,” Daniel replied, unable to hide his own smile. He
moved closer to her and wrapped his arms around her waist. “While we’re at
it, wouldn’t hurt to experiment with some of those ideas you had on the
survey.”
Finis!
