“You heard of Alternate Universes? It is theoretical physics… but what if it is true?”
(Monica Reyes, from the x-files episode “ 4-D”)

Our universe

The control room of the SGC

After the Tok’ra left, General Hammond, Jack and Teal’c returned to the control room. Sam, Janet and Daniel were waiting for them in the control room.

“So, what do we do to help Andrew’s universe? I mean, now that the Tok’ra are not longer an option,” asked Daniel. He was holding baby Andrew in his arms.

“We have contacted the Nox, but they don’t believe in violence as a means of defense. So, they said that they would find a way to help Andrew’s universe without betraying their beliefs, ” explained the General.

The others didn’t know what to think about that. What would the Nox do?

Alternate Universe SGC

The control room

“Any news from the Tollan or the Nox?” asked Daniel Jackson, as he arrived to the busy control room of the SGC.

One could not miss the tension and the nervousness affecting everyone in the room. In case of a negative answer from its allies, Earth would have to face the Goa’uld attack alone. And that wasn’t a very reassuring thought for anyone.

“No, there are no news from them yet,” replied General Hammond, his face grim and worried.

Daniel was extremely disappointed to hear that. Time was counting down before the Goa’uld attack, and nobody could tell if Earth would be able to defend itself against Apophis’ army. For the moment, Earth’s chances didn’t look great.

Leaving the General to his business, Daniel went to see Cassie, who was in the control room. Daniel and Janet had brought her to the SGC since they didn’t want to leave her alone in a moment like this one.

“You okay?” asked the archeologist to the girl.

“Yes. I just hope that we can defeat the Goa’uld so that Andrew can come back to us,” said Cassandra.

Daniel nodded his head, understanding Cassandra’s feelings. He hoped to see the baby again, as soon as possible. Daniel missed his son very much.

Taking a look around him, Daniel noticed that Sam, Jack and Teal’c were also in the control room, anxiety showing on their faces too.

At that point, the Stargate started activating. SG-1 and General Hammond came closer to the window allowing them to see the embarkation room downstairs.

“Off-world wormhole activation,” announced the technician. “It is SG-4,” he said as the computer recognized the identification signal.

Daniel felt his heart beating faster with anxiety, because SG-4 was the team sent to meet with the Tollan. The SGC would soon know the Tollan’s answer to their request.

Wishing for the best, General Hammond and Jack went to the embarkation room to greet the team.

Colonel Andrew Capella came through the Stargate, followed by the rest of his team.

“Welcome back, SG-4,” said the General, fearing to ask them about the outcome of their mission. He was worried about a negative answer.

“The Tollan said yes,” announced Capella. He couldn’t wait any longer to give this excellent news.

“They said yes?” asked Jack, not believing his ears. He was happy to hear the news, of course. But he was skeptic since the Tollan had always refused to share their technology with Earth. They were afraid that humans could use the Tollan technology against each other.

“Yes, Colonel. They said yes,” confirmed Major Mary Robertson.

After the tense hours the SGC had just lived, everyone was relieved to hear this. SG-4 was definitely proud of its success, and they had a good reason to be. They brought hope to Earth and a reliable way of protecting the planet.

“It wasn’t easy to convince the Tollan, though. We had to explain the situation very clearly to them before they accepted,” explained Doctor Maxime Smith.

“They understood that we won’t be able to defend Earth against the Goa’uld without their help,” interrupted Sergeant Mark Lockwell.

“So, they’ll bring 38 ion cannons as soon as they are ready,” announced Doctor Amanda Reyes, with a big smile on her face. This was perfect, because Major Carter had estimated that 38 ion cannons were the minimal number necessary to protect the whole planet.

“And here we are,” completed Lieutenant Micha Kes.

“Good work, people,” said General Hammond, extremely pleased with what he had heard. SG-4 smiled proudly and left the embarkation room.

Janet’s office

Janet was sitting at her desk. She was trying to concentrate on her work, but she couldn’t. There was just too much in her mind, with this approaching Goa’uld attack. However, her thoughts were mostly filled with a certain little baby and her concern for him.

Slowly, she opened the drawer of her desk. There was picture of Andrew in that drawer. Tears came to her eyes as she looked at it. She saw the baby’s blue eyes, which were the same as Daniel’s, his father. She was amazed by the baby’s smile, which brightened his face every time he smiled.

Janet closed her eyes and bit her lower lip trying to control her emotions. But she couldn’t. Tears started flooding her face. She missed her baby so much. She understood why she had to send her son away to another universe, but it was still hard to be separated from him. There was emptiness in her life without the baby. Her whole body ached because of his absence.

Daniel came into the office, and saw her crying. He approached Janet, and held her close to him.

“This is so hard, Daniel!” sobbed Janet.

”I know, Janet. It isn’t easy for me either, but we have to be strong for our son and daughter.”

Janet nodded her head, realizing that Daniel was right. He caressed her hair and kissed her forehead, wanting above all to heal her pain.

“The Tollan said yes,” announced Daniel, happy to give this news.

This time tears of joy came to Janet.

They were saved! Earth, with the help of the Tollan, was going to defeat Apophis. Which meant that Andrew would be coming back soon. Daniel, Janet, Cassie and Andrew would be a family again. The nightmare was over.

Daniel and Janet continued holding each other for a long moment, their hearts filled with hope.

The Tollan arrived three hours later with the ion cannons. Chancellor Travell came through the Stargate, followed by some other Tollan.

Chancellor Travell and General Hammond greeted each other.

”We apologize for the delay, but it was necessary,” said Travell, with her usual calm voice.

“Do not worry about that. We really appreciate your help,” said sincerely General Hammond.

“Understand this, General,” she said looking straight at Hammond. “At the beginning, the Tollan Curia didn’t want to give you the ion cannons. However, we understood the situation. That is why we decided to comply with your request, but we asked our scientists to modify the cannons. Now, each of the cannons has a device, which will disintegrate the cannon after it has been fired. The device will also disintegrate the cannon if someone tries to open it. This will prevent you from examining it. Finally, we will use the device to disintegrate upon request all the remaining cannons, once the attack is over. Of course, the device doesn’t affect the power of any of the ion cannons.”

She paused before continuing.

“Further, General, the Tollan people you see here will remain on Earth during the entire operation. We don’t want to risk that you to learn the secrets of the Tollan ion cannons. Those are our terms.”

“We understand your reasons for doing this modification. Once again, we thank you for your help,” approved Hammond.

The important thing right now was to defend Earth using the cannons, not to learn how they worked.

Waiting no longer, the General gave orders for the Tollan ion cannons to be sent to appropriate places on Earth.

All of this meant that the Stargate program had to become common knowledge. They could not expect to bring the Tollan ion cannons all over the world without the other governments of Earth wondering what was going on.

Therefore, the president of the United States made a speech in which he explained the situation.

The people of Earth were first surprised by the news of the Stargate project and wondered how it had been kept secret for so long. There was a worried moment as the president explained who were the Goa’uld and announced that they were going to attack. But all moved to relief as people heard that Earth had now an effective defense system, thanks to the Tollan allies. The president made it clear that there was no reason to panic. The only thing they had to do now was to wait.

The SGC control room

There was another kind of anxiety filling the room now. People were restless as they waited for Apophis’ army, so that all this could be over for good.

“General! We have detected an army of Goa’uld spaceships approaching Earth,” announced the technician.

Everybody looked at the screens showing the spaceships. This was it! Apophis had arrived to attack Earth, just like the Tok’ra had warned them.

Inside Apophis’ Goa’uld mothership

“My lord, we are now in orbit around the Tau’ri planet,” announced a Jaffa to his god, Apophis.

The Goa’uld master ordered the Jaffa to dial Earth, using the Stargate inside the mothership. Once it was done, Apophis turned on the device he had stolen from Sokar. With this device, Apophis started bombarding high-energy particles through the now active wormhole. The particles arrived on the other side of the wormhole, and formed Apophis’ image on the iris protecting Earth’s Stargate. At the same time, the master Goa’uld communicated with the SGC through radio signal.

“Tau’ri! I have come looking for a baby called Andrew Jackson Fraiser. I order you to give him to me,” he said with his usual deep and arrogant voice.

“This is General Hammond, commander of the SGC,” said the general’s voice. “We will not give you the baby.”

”Very well. We will attack your planet, then.”

The Stargate deactivated and the transmission ended.

The Goa’uld master had a smile on his lips. At last, the Tau’ri will be destroyed! This would show the superiority of the Goa’uld once and for all, there was no question about that.

And, of course, there was the satisfaction of knowing that the Shol’va Teal’c was going to die with the Tau’ri. That thought made Apophis extremely happy. He would enjoy each moment of it.

With this in mind, he ordered the beginning of the invasion of Earth.

The SGC

Their hearts filled with thousand emotions, Daniel and Janet heard Apophis’ threat. They felt their hearts skip a beat when Apophis said that they had to choose between Andrew and Earth.

Daniel and Janet knew that the Tollan ion cannons were going to prevent the attack. However, they wondered what would they have done without the cannons? Would they have given up Andrew to protect Earth? Would they have sacrificed Earth for Andrew? It was a heartbreaking choice that no parent deserved to face.

Tossing those thoughts away, Daniel and Janet held hands and looked at the screen. Apophis had an army surrounding Earth by now. If Apophis succeeded his plan, the invasion of Earth would be fast, giving them no chance at all.

Time stood still, waiting for the upcoming events.

A security guard arrived at that moment, and approached General Hammond. ”Sir! The exterior cameras show something strange.”

General Hammond looked at the screen showing what the exterior cameras were seeing. He was surprised to see that the sky had turned strange colors.

“What is that?” he asked, looking at Sam for an answer. But she seemed just as surprised. “I don’t know, sir!” exclaimed the Major.

“Well, that color isn’t the normal sky color,” said Jack.

Suddenly, a beam of light surrounded the colonel, and he disappeared before General Hammond and Sam. They turned on the alarms.

“Code nine!” screamed Sam into the loudspeaker.

There was only one thought in her mind. Where was Jack?

Jack had been beamed up to Thor’s ship. The colonel looked around him, and saw Thor.

”Greetings, O’Neill,” said the Asgard.

”Thor! You came to help us!”

”I am not alone, O’Neill”

That is when Jack saw Lyla of the Nox, accompanied by a couple of other Nox. They were deep in concentration.

”What’s going on, Thor?” asked the Colonel.

“They are making your planet invisible. That is what is causing the strange coloring in your planet’s sky, but you only see that coloring while in the surface of the planet. From space, the planet is invisible,” explained Thor.

”Really?”

Thor moved so that Jack could see through the spaceship’s window. The colonel saw that Earth was indeed invisible.

”Cool!” exclaimed the Colonel. ”Hey, why don’t the Nox do that to their own planet?” ”It takes too much energy to do that, O’Neill. They could not sustain these levels, if they wanted to make their planet invisible at all times.”

”I see,” said Jack. “But how did you know that Earth was under attack?”

“Actually, it is the Nox who got a message announcing this attack. They contacted us afterwards. It appears that they received a message from another universe warning them about this attack.”

Jack was really surprised.

”Another universe? The Nox have a quantum mirror?”

“They have a means to travel to other realities. It seems like the Earth of the other universe contacted the Nox of their reality. In turn, the Nox of that reality contacted the Nox in this reality. The Nox of both realities decided that this way to help your planet without betraying their pacifist beliefs. ”

Jack looked confused.

“Don’t worry about this, O’Neill. But you have to contact your friends and explain that Earth is invisible.”

Inside Apophis’ mothership

“Where is Earth?” exclaimed the master Goa’uld, eyes beaming with anger.

“My lord, I… don’t know,” said the Jaffa who had been at the spaceship’s controls.

Apophis looked at his arm ribbon. The Jaffa knew what was coming up. He couldn’t stop shivering. With an arrogant smile, Apophis directed the energy of the ribbon to the Jaffa’s head. In matter of seconds, the Jaffa was dead.

“Prepare the Death Glidders!” ordered the master Goa’uld to the rest of his army.

At the SGC…

The SGC were trying to figure out what had happened to the colonel. But nobody had the slightest idea of his whereabouts. Cassie, Daniel and Janet did their best to help the worried Sam.

Jack’s image appeared in the control room moments later. Cassandra, SG-1 and General Hammond were in the room at that moment.

They were all relieved to see Jack safe, even if he wasn’t actually in the room. He explained to them that Thor had beamed him up to his spaceship.

“The Nox are also here. It is them who are responsible for the change in the sky. They are making our planet invisible, so that Apophis won’t be able to find Earth, ” he continued. ”That’s what causing the strange coloring in the sky?” asked Sam.

”Yes, Major.”

Hammond was going to say something, but a technician interrupted him.

“General! Death Gliders detected,” announced the technician.

General Hammond looked at the screen, and saw the Death Gliders leaving Apophis’ mother ship.

“They are going to investigate what happened to Earth,” explained Teal’c.

General Hammond nodded his head in understanding.

Clearly, the Goa’uld were the first to attack. Now, it was time to defend Earth. They had waited long enough, and being invisible was a true asset.

”Fire the cannons,” ordered General Hammond. His order was transmitted to all the cannons around the world.

Everyone in the control room looked at the screen. They saw Apophis’s army blow up ship after ship. They had been surprised by the attack, which from their point of view seemed to come from nowhere. The Death Gliders were destroyed as well when Goa’uld spaceships exploded. Finally, there was a total outburst of joy in the SGC when Apophis’ own spaceship blew up.

Inside Thor’s spaceship, Jack saw Apophis’ army blow up.

”Yes!” he exclaimed, with a gesture of victory.

“There is something we have to talk about, O’Neill. The Asgard are worried about this situation. Many Goa’uld masters wanted to attack Earth since Hathor died. However, some Goa’uld masters were opposed to it. That is why Earth was spared until now. But Apophis’ death will probably convince the Goa’uld masters to attack Earth now, to take revenge for both Apophis and Hathor’s deaths.”

”Hey, they should be thanking us!” exclaimed Jack.

”We have to take some action to prevent this. The Tollan cannons, and the Nox’s invisibility powers would not be able to protect Earth from this kind of attack.” ”What do you have in mind?” asked Jack.

Thor explained him that there was something called the Protected Planets treaty. If Earth were to be included in that treaty, then the Goa’uld would not attack Earth.

Further, Thor announced to Jack that the Asgard wanted him to be Earth’s representative for the negotiations. Jack was surprised by this, but accepted to do it.

The Asgard would start the negotiations as soon as possible.

”I suppose it is time for you to go back home. Good luck, O’Neill” said Thor.

“Say thanks to the Nox ,” exclaimed Jack, in the last seconds before he was beamed down to the SGC.

The SGC

Jack reappeared in the control room, among a crowd of overjoyed people.

“Colonel!” exclaimed Sam when she saw him.

She came rushing to meet him.

“We did it!” said Sam and Jack at the same time, referring to the destruction of Apophis’ army. Then, Sam and Jack hugged each other, overwhelmed by the happiness of the moment. General Hammond decided to ignore that hug between two of his best officers. After all, Apophis and his army had just been defeated, and that called a celebration.

The General looked around him and saw Daniel and Janet kissing, their faces beaming with joy. Hammond and Cassandra winked at each other with complicity as they watched Daniel and Janet. Hammond continued smiling at the happiness of the two doctors, just like a proud father would have done.

Soon after Apophis’ defeat, the Tollan verified that the 38 ion cannons had disintegrated, just as they had desired it. After that was done, they left Earth even though the SGC had invited them to stay for the celebration. The Tollans were among the heroes of the day, but they didn’t want any glory. They were just pleased to know that they had helped their Earth allies. That was all.

Earth had its biggest celebration ever that day. There were people everywhere, smiling and cheering. Fireworks were lighted in many places. They had good reasons to be happy. First, there was the fact that Apophis’ army had been destroyed. Second, there was the news that the planet would be protected for sure, thanks to the Protected Planet’s treaty.

Janet, Cassie and Daniel were downtown celebrating among the crowd. The trio didn’t know how on Earth they had escaped the army of journalists outside the SGC. But they had succeeded into doing that. They just had to see this celebration for themselves.

The night came soon. Janet and Daniel were walking in a park, and Cassie was between them. The park was calm now, giving them the peace they needed at this moment, especially after this eventful day. The stars were shinning bright, as if they were celebrating Earth’s victory as well.

This was close to being the perfect way of ending this day. However, not everything was perfect yet, since Andrew was still away.

”I guess it is time to go back for Andrew,” said Daniel, thinking of his son. He was happy because Andrew’s return was near.

”Yes,” agreed Janet. She was just as happy.

Daniel couldn’t resist. He bent and kissed Janet, amazed again at how much he loved her. He had not expected to fall in love so soon after Shar’eh’s death, but he had. Janet had healed his pain, and had given him something to look for. He could see the love in her eyes as well, and this filled him with wonder.

They smiled once their kiss ended.

“I can’t wait to see Andrew again!” exclaimed Cassie. She definitely missed her little brother as well.

“Well, let’s wait no longer,” said Daniel, passing an arm around Janet and holding Cassie’s hand with his free hand.

They walked away with a big smile on their faces.
