One of these days i really am going to stop

i was thinking of turning this into a series, good
idea? or is time for me to turn off the computer and
go along quietly with those nice men in the white
coats? (let me know either way ;) )

First Date: Dinner and a Movie
***********************************
“Janet?”
“Yes, Cassie?”
“I’m hungry.”
Janet didn’t even glance up from the TV. She was
laying at one end of the couch and Cassie was at the
other, both totally engrossed in a rerun of Friends
they’d seen at least three times. “Me too.”
“Do we have anything to eat?”
“I don’t know, why don’t you go look?”
Cassie glanced up, then exhaustedly put her head back
down on the pillow. “Don’t wanna. You go.”
Janet looked at the kitchen, a full two rooms away,
and frowned. “Kitchen’s too far, I’ll never make it.”
“So what are we gonna do?”
“Call Sam,” Janet declared, reaching blindly behind
her to grab the phone. Pulling it onto her lap, while
still focusing completely on goings-on in Monica and
Rachel’s apartment, she dialed her friend’s number
from memory and waited for her to pick up. Four rings
and she got the answering machine. “Hey Sam, it’s me.
Cassie and I are lying here on the couch, about to
starve to death and were hoping you’d spontaneously
have the irresistible urge to bring us some food. If
you get this any time tonight we’ll probably still be
right here, so hop on over.”
“What if she’s busy all night?” Cassie asked
worriedly as Janet hung up the phone and returned it
to the table behind her.
“Sam? Have a life? Not likely.”
The episode of Friends ended and Drew Carey came on.
Janet and Cassie didn’t move. That would have
required far too much energy. Drew finally ended as
well and Janet and Cassie had just begun their weekly
argument of whether or not they were going to watch
Dawson’s Creek, when the doorbell rung.
“Come on in, the door's open!” Janet bellowed. In a
lower voice to Cassie she added, “Told you she didn’t
have a life.”
“I’ll be sure to tell Sam you said that the next time
I see her,” came a voice from the doorway, directly
behind Janet. “And announcing that your door is open
when just about anybody could be outside is probably
not the brightest idea in the world.”
Janet spun her head around so fast she rather
gracelessly lost her balance and toppled off the
couch. “Daniel!” she proclaimed in surprise from the
floor. “We were, um, expecting Sam.”
Daniel grinned down at her, then set down the pizza
and six-pack of coke he’d brought to give her a hand
up. Then he helped Cassie up, since she’d been
giggling so hard she too had rolled off the sofa.
“Sam couldn’t make it, so she sent me instead,” he
explained.
Janet blinked in surprise at the unbelievably generous
and painfully attractive man standing in the middle of
her living room. Cassie, on the other hand, accepted
the situation far more easily and grabbed the now
abandoned pizza. “What kind d’ya get?” she asked,
then impatiently opened the box without waiting for a
reply. “Ooh, pineapple and anchovies, my favorite!”
Daniel grimaced, then gave Janet a weak smile. “Only
half. The other half is normal for us.”
“Thank you, Daniel, you didn’t have to go to all this
trouble just for us,” Janet finally managed to say.
“Couldn’t have two of my favorite ladies starving to
death now could I?” Daniel asked grinning broadly.
“Aren’t you going to eat?”
“Only if you’ll join us,” Janet smiled back, still
standing awkwardly in the middle of the room opposite
Daniel. “Cassie stop scarfing the pizza and go get us
some plates!”
“I don’t need a plate,” Cassie complained, eating her
pizza over the box in her lap and starring
hypnotically at Dawson’s Creek.
Janet rolled her eyes. “*I’ll* get us some plates
then. Have a seat, Daniel, make yourself at home.
Should I get some ice too, or are the sodas cold?”
Janet called over her shoulder as she headed for the
kitchen.
“No, I’m afraid they’re warm. Here, let me give you a
hand,” Daniel replied following her into the kitchen.
Janet handed him three plates and a pile of paper
napkins then sent him back out into the living room to
relax while she got cups and ice. She was half way
through the dining room when Cassie yelled excitedly,
“Janet, Daniel brought us a movie too!” Thank
goodness, Janet thought, no more Dawson’s Creek!
“I owe you, big time,” Janet whispered to Daniel as
they settled in on the couch with their pizza and
drinks while Cassie popped in the movie and hit the
lights. (She’d insisted that to get the whole movie
experience it had to be completely dark.)
Daniel had brought Braveheart, which despite its gross
historical inaccuracies, he admitted to liking a lot.
Cassie had never seen it, and even though Janet had,
she didn’t mind in the least watching it again. It
had been a long day though and Janet was extremely
tired, so it wasn’t long before her eyes started
drifting closed. Every once and a while Cassie’d give
her a slight nudge and Janet would again focus on the
screen in front of her, but it never lasted, and
before she knew it she was waking up three hours
later, snuggled up nicely on Daniel’s chest.
The room was completely dark, the TV having long been
turned off and Cassie already gone to bed. Glancing
up Janet noticed Daniel was himself sound asleep with
his arm wrapped sweetly around her. Janet couldn’t
help smiling at how adorable he looked, but her
movements most of stirred him because his eyes
starting blinking open and his gaze groggily met hers.
“Hi,” he mumbled.
“Hey, we must have fallen asleep.”
“Cassie?”
“Put herself to bed by the looks of it; probably
didn’t want to disturb us. Wow, she even cleaned up,”
Janet commented as she sat up and looked around.
“Having you around must be a good influence on her.
Wanna come over more often?”
Daniel smiled genuinely, though Janet didn’t notice as
she was already getting up to turn the light on. “I
wouldn’t mind that a bit, if you wouldn’t.”
Janet turned back toward him, slightly surprised by
his answer. She’d only been half-joking, but he didn’t
know that. “I’d like that.” She grinned sappily then
went back to studiously trying to find that elusive
light switch so he wouldn’t notice how dumb she
looked.
Daniel blinked blindly as the light suddenly came on
then glanced at his watch. “It’s 12:30 already, I’d
better get going. Work tomorrow. But, um, are you
busy tomorrow night?” he asked, standing up to collect
his jacket and movie.
“Don’t have any plans, care to save me from Felicity?”
“It’s a date.”
“Thanks again, Daniel, you made our night.” Janet
said, as she opened the door for him.
“Any time, you made mine too.” Daniel replied before
stepping out into the darkness.
Janet wondered at the unexpectedness of the evening,
then sighed happily and headed off to bed.
the end... maybe...
