Janet watched from the doorway, hidden from the infirmary as the Daniel wrapped the tall blonde in his arms. She bit her lip uncomfortably, feeling like a voyeur as she watched the two of them together.

He may not have been able to save Sha’re, but he had been able to save Sarah, and she was happy for him.

Really, she was.

She turned away, sighing. Daniel was her friend and her patient, nothing more. If he wanted to get involved again with his ex-girlfriend – who was now minus one snake, there was nothing she could do about it.

Janet headed to her office, and dropped down in the chair. Leaning forward, she rested her elbows on the desk and her head in her hands. It had been an exhausting twenty-four hours for her, what with having another Goa’uld in her infirmary, and three teams returning all with a selection of injuries. She just wanted to go home, and try to forget about what she had just witnessed. But first, she had to finish the paperwork on Captain McDonnell of SG-8, who had returned with a rather unpleasant rash all over his shoulders.

“Knock, knock.” Her heart fluttered and she looked up to see a sheepish looking archaeologist standing at the door.

“Daniel,” she greeted, forcing a smile. “What can I do for you?”

“I need you to come with me for a minute,” he said. She frowned slightly and stood up.

“Is there anything wrong with Doctor Gardner?” Janet asked, not able to bring herself to call the woman ‘Sarah.’ She knew that she’d have to at some point if she was dating Daniel, but she needed time.

“No, she’s fine,” Daniel replied, watching the petite woman as she got to her feet. “Come on.”

Janet followed him down the hall, stopping outside the elevator. He swiped his pass, and once the doors opened, indicated that she was to precede him in. “Where are we going? It’s not going to take long is it? I’ve still got loads of paperwork and…”

Daniel’s mouth descending on hers interrupted her. She froze at first, then relaxed into the kiss. Her arms wrapped around his neck, while his came to rest at the small of her back. Somehow she ended up with her back against the wall, with his body covering hers completely.

The doors behind them opened, and a familiar Texan voice exclaimed “Doctor Jackson!”

Breaking away, they saw General Hammond standing, staring at them with his mouth hanging open. Janet blushed scarlet, and Daniel surreptitiously wiped his mouth.

“Sorry, General,” he said. “It was the best way to stop her talking.”

“You do realise that there are rules about what can happen on base?” Hammond informed him. “Get out of here before you do that again!”

Daniel grinned. “Yes, Sir,” he replied. Janet’s mouth dropped open. “Thank you, sir.”

Hammond nodded, a small smile on his face. “See you on Monday.”

The doors closed, leaving him to wait for the elevator to return minus its two current passengers.

Daniel turned back to face Janet, who was looking slightly stunned.

“Daniel, what’s going on?!” she demanded.

“I love you,” he blurted out.

She stared at him, hardly believing her ears.

“I’ve known for a while now how I feel about you, and I realised today that I had to tell you,” he said. “I was able to actually say some things to Sarah today, which I thought I’d never have the chance to. And I knew that something could happen to me, or to you, and I would always regret never telling you that I loved you.”

Janet just gaped at him. “So, you’re not getting back together with her?”

He laughed. “No,” he assured her, taking her small hands in his. “Janet, Sarah is my past. We’ll always have what we once had, but there’s too much history between us. I could never be with another woman as long as I’m in love with *you*. You’re my future… if that’s okay with you.”

His answer came in the form of another kiss, as she wrapped her arms around his neck once more and pulled him down to meet her waiting lips. “It’s definitely okay with me,” she replied once they broke free for air.

When the elevator doors opened on the surface level, they were standing next to each other, their hands entwined. They would face the future together.
