A young boy sits, knees to his chest, on the slightly damp ground near
his father. His crystal blue eyes are turned upwards, sparkling with
wonder as his father talks to him, points out things.
They are watching the stars, those seemingly ageless symbols of dreams
- reach for the stars, someday you just might make it.
Pisces, Aquarius, Cancer. This is the 'zodiac', the boy's father tells
him.
Ursa major, Ursa minor. The bears.
The stars tell stories, tell us of our ancestors - they dreamed too,
everyone dreams.
The boy takes it all in avidly, following his father's pointing finger
as it traces outlines among the stars. He sees the hunter, the bears,
his young mind picturing them as his ancestors must have seen them
years ago.
I'm going to go there one day, he says, I'm going to go to the stars,
Daddy.
His father smiles, but doesn't say anything more then it's time for
bed.
The boy's face falls, but he knows that the stars wil always be there.
They've a forever of travelling to do, and someday he will be up there
with them for a while, sharing their journey.
He gives his father a kiss, before running off to do his teeth before
bed, thinking about what book he will ask his father to read tonight.
His father remains on the lawn for a few moments, not noticing or not
caring the moisture seeping through the thin pair of pants he is
wearing.
I wonder if he knows, he muses, I wonder if he knows that the stars
took his mother...
Shaking his head to banish such thoughts, he looks up at the stars,
wondering if he is looking at the planet she was lost on. He does this
every night, looks for her. He knows he will never know, but the
illusion of hope is enough to keep him going.
I love you, Janet, he whispers softly, I hope you knew.
With one last sad movement, he pulls himself up, ignoring the slight
creak of his knees protesting, and turns to go inside. His future, and
his son's awaits, and time enough has been spent in the past.
