Daniel made himself walk out of the commissary, forced his legs to carry
him away. Oh, it hurt, he hurt, but it was necessary.
Love hurt. He'd learned that now, finally. Every time he had loved, it had
been taken away, and he didn't want that anymore.
There was nothing he wanted less than to cause Janet pain, and it was pain
he'd seen in her eyes. There was no other choice, however.
The walk outside that night had been a mistake. Daniel should have known
better. But he'd had a couple drinks, and the house had been so close and
loud and crowded that when Janet had suggested they take a break and go
outside, he jumped at the chance.
The night had been warm, with just a hint of a cool breeze. The moon had
been waning, just a thin crescent in the sky, but the stars were so bright
that the moonlight wasn't missed.
Daniel still didn't know what had possessed him to kiss her. It was an
idiotic thing to do.
At the time, it had seemed the most natural thing in the world.
When they'd gone back into the party, they'd lost each other in the swarm
of people. Daniel had left shortly after that. He hadn't wanted to see
her; had needed to figure out what he'd say to her, how he'd react if she
brought it up.
Nothing he could have said would have been painless. Daniel had been left
with the decisions as to what would have kept the pain to a minimum.
Brushing it off seemed the easiest option.
He thought he'd done a good job. There had been no tears, no slapping of
his face. Just a calm masking of the anguish he knew he'd caused.
It was for the best.
