Daniel watched Jack walk down the corridor after saying goodnight to Sam at the elevator. As good a friend as the older man was to him, Daniel knew he was too skeptical to believe in ghosts, or different planes, or whatever was happening to Daniel at the moment. But he had to convince *someone.* Both Teal’c and Sam had felt him, so it was possible, but neither of them had believed enough to see him either.

Sighing heavily, he started walking down the hall, trying to think of what to do next. He was fairly convinced that the skull was a teleportation device and that somehow something had gone wrong, and he just needed to find someone to believe in that enough to go back to the planet and figure this whole thing out. There was also this nagging thought at the back of his mind, though, that maybe he really was dead. If so, why was he here? Perhaps he was meant to say his final good-byes, to finish unfinished business. Either way, there was only one person he could think of to turn to now.

Daniel walked through the closed office door unnoticed. He stood there, contemplating what to say for a moment or two, but that was unnoticed as well. Finally he looked up from his hands and at the person in front of him. There was no time like the present.

“I’m not quite sure how to begin, because I’m sure to you this seems pretty much out of the blue, ok, *completely* out of the blue, but it’s not really. At least not for me. I’ve been thinking about this for quite a while. At first I didn’t think anything of it, then after a while, I realized I couldn’t think of anything else. I just haven’t had the guts to tell you before now, there’s always seemed to be a good reason not to, but that doesn’t seem to be very relevant anymore. Because I’m either dead or lost or something, and at the rate things are going I may never get back and I may never have another chance to tell you. But now I’m babbling… not that you’d notice anyway.” Daniel pushed up his glasses and rubbed his face before continuing. “So here goes: I… I care about you. I guess that’s what I’m trying to say, but it doesn’t seem like enough. I care about Sam and Jack and Teal’c too, but not like you. Somewhere along the line I started feeling something different for you. I know you would have never guessed, I’ve kept it pretty well hidden, but I’m standing here because I’m praying that maybe there’s a remote chance that you feel a little bit of the same thing.”

Daniel crouched down and clung the edge of the desk until his knuckles were white. He stared across it, willing the figure before him to look up, to feel him there, to do anything. Seconds, minutes passed and she continued to work, heedless of him. Wearily his head fell forward onto his hands and he clenched his eyes shut. Of all the people he knew he was sure that she would be able to sense his presence, but perhaps that had been wishful thinking.

“Daniel?”

Daniel’s head shot up and he found himself looking straight into her eyes. She’d barely whispered his name, wary and uncertain, but she’d felt him nonetheless and her look was so intense it felt like she actually saw him, making his heart race.

“Daniel? Are you there?” she whispered again.

“I’m here. I’m right here, Janet.”

“God, Daniel, if you’re out there somewhere, come back. This place just isn’t the same without you. We miss you.”

“We, Janet?” Daniel asked. “What about *you*?”

Janet bit her lip and her gaze fell to the desk. “And I miss you.”

Daniel reached forwards trying to take her hand but he passed right through her, frustrating him. “Don’t give up on me yet. I’ll find a way back.”

“Just come home,” she begged softly.

“I will, I promise.” With one last look, Daniel turned on his heels and walked back through her wall, determined to find a way back to normal, even if it meant trying everyone on base.

the end
