SUMMARY: Janet suffers a devastating injury on a mission gone wrong.
In the twelve hours that the team had been off world, they found nothing
which could tell them about what happened to Janet. They were able to open
the doors on the other side of the room though. Kardiphilous had deciphered
the locking mechanism and with some help from Teal’c, opened the doors.
Venturing outside, they discovered that the one room building was surrounded
by a beautiful garden full of fruits and trees and berries and flowers. A
large bubbling fountain, made of jade and marble, stood just in front of the
steps up to the Gate room. The garden itself was surrounded by a dense
forest. But even this beautiful place didn’t help the team answer their
questions. It just added more of them. Jack decided to give up.
“Carter, Teal’c, Kardiphilous, let’s go.”, he said as he walked briskly
back to the Gate. The other three followed. About halfway across the gate
room, Dr Kardiphilous looked over to one of the walls and saw a small statue
standing on a ledge, its position on the ledge seemed to say, ‘Take Me’. He
looked both ways, started to reach for the statue, then turned back to the
rest of SG-1.
“Anyone mind if I take dis back wit us?”, he asked in his deep New York
accent.
“Fine.”, replied Jack, still checking to make sure he had everything he
brought with him. Teal’c stood watch and Carter had begun dialing home.
Deciding that it was this or nothing, Kardiphilous shrugged, grabbed the
statue, and tried to lift it. It wouldn’t budge. So, he pulled harder. Again
it would not move. Finally, he grabbed it with both hands, braced his feet,
and gave a sharp, strong yank. As the figure broke from the ledge, the room
started to shake.
“Kardiphilous!”, yelled Jack over the rumbling, “What the hell did ya do?!”
Before the linguist could answer, the ceiling started to cave in. To
escape the falling debris, Teal’c dove into an archway and lay flat on the
ground. Jack pushed Sam down into a corner and leaped on top of her, the two
of them slamming down hard as they hit the floor. As Kardiphilous stood
frozen, gaping at the crumbling ceiling, the largest slab from above fell,
impacting with his face.
-----------------
The dust was everywhere. In the air, on the ground, on their bodies. Jack
was the first to stir. As he opened his eyes, someone’s left ear came into
view. His eyes focused, blinked, then blinked again. He shook his head and
pushed back away from the body beneath him.
“Carter,” he groaned as he moved into a sitting position away from his
second in command.
“Carter, you okay?” She lay still on the floor, face down. Jack leaned
over and rolled her over onto her back. A small pool of blood had dried on
her face where it impacted with the sandstone. He quickly reached his
fingers just under her jaw to feel for a pulse. Thank God. It was there and
it was strong. Her breathing was shallow, but regular. He shook her.
“Sam, honey, wake up.”
“Oh, Jack.”, she whispered as her body slowly writhed in a kind of soft
ecstasy. Suddenly, she snapped awake and sat up. She coughed several times,
clinging to Jack’s coat sleeve with one hand, her other hand over her chest.
“Sir?”, she tried to say through her wheezing. He scooted closer and
gently touched her bruised and bloodied cheekbone.
“You okay?” She nodded and coughed again. Her bangs flopping in time with
the exhalations.
“I think so, Sir.”, she confirmed. The two of them looked around to see
most of the room destroyed. Teal’c had come around and was getting his
bearings. He positioned himself into a sitting position, then stood.
“ColonelO’Neill, MajorCarter. Are you injured?” The two officer’s shook
their heads.
“No.”, began Jack cautiously as he rubbed his eyes. “But I could use some
Tylenol right about now.” Sam massaged her temples.
“Me too.” Teal’c just raised an eyebrow looked around at the carnage. His
eyes stopped on a gruesome sight.
“It would appear that DoctorKardiphilous is dead.” Jack and Sam’s eyes
popped open and turned their attention to where Teal’c was staring. On the
floor was Kardiphilous’ body. Where his head should have been there was only
a large granite slab and a smattering of blood around its edge.
“Ya think?” said Jack.
“Sir!”, yelped Sam, “The DHD!” Everyone walked to where the
dial-home-device was standing and found a large hole in the center
activation dome. Curious as to what caused it, they peered down inside. A
large section of stone had crashed through the dome and impacted into the
energy crystals, shattering them. The DHD was now useless.
“Aw SHIT!”, yelled the Colonel, throwing his hat to the ground. “Now what?”
Sam poked around inside the unit and sighed.
“Now..”, Sam began.
“...we wait.”, finished Teal’c.
-----------------
Within a month of the DHD being destroyed, SG-1 was joined by SG-2 and
SG-7, and the three teams began working on repairing the heavily damaged
unit. Surprisingly, though they were stranded on the alien world, the SG
teams lived quite comfortably. The large fountain outside provided clean
water for bathing and drinking, and they had procured fresh fruits, berries
and vegetables from the garden. All other supplies which they needed were
sent through the Gate by the SGC.
As was appropriate, Kardiphilous was given a decent burial in the garden,
and General Hammond sent a pre-recorded eulogy through for the funeral
ceremony. Meanwhile, radio contact with the SG teams was maintained and
information on the repairs was being constantly sent back and forth through
the Gate. The work was going slowly, and they weren’t getting back any time
soon.
-----------------
Life at the Fraiser home changed a bit in the past month and a half. News
of SG-1’s stranding dimmed any hope of a cure being found for Janet. She
took it best she could. Daniel had moved in and adjusted quite well with his
two new companions. Without SG-1, he became a cultural and archaeological
consultant for the other teams. General Hammond made sure that he and Janet
were recompensed for her “temporary” inability to function at the SGC. He
gave Daniel a much overdue raise, and Janet received weekly disability and
compensation checks in the mail.
Their professions aside, Daniel and Janet seemed to have everything in
common. Both were into health foods. Both liked classical and nature music.
Both had terrible allergies and were very near-sighted. Both were
previously married and now single. Both enjoyed practicing meditation and
going to art presentations. Both were non-denominational Christians. Both
loved Autumn and Winter, especially Christmas. Both of them enjoyed
theatre. In fact, there seemed very few things that they didn’t have in
common. And their mutual interests and beliefs only served to strengthened
their already deep friendship.
Cassandra also enjoyed Daniel’s presence. His help at home was invaluable.
On a usual day, while Cassie was away at high school, Daniel and Janet would
go shopping, run errands, and generally take care of business as usual.
After school, Cassie would come home and clean up while Daniel made dinner.
He was an excellent chef, and the meals he prepared were always new, exotic,
and delicious.
Once supper was over, Daniel left for work at the SGC. Cassie worked on
her homework while Janet cleaned up the dishes and straightened the kitchen.
They then went for their evening walk with the dog, gave the house a final
checking, and relaxed for a few hours before Cassie hopped off into bed.
Janet would stay up, listening to audio books and waiting anxiously for
Daniel to come home. He was always out until midnight.
Upon his return, they would spend an hour or so sitting together on the
couch, sipping a drink and talking about the objects or languages he was
studying. Finally, they would go to bed. This routine seemed to work well.
That is, until one night.
“So”, Janet asked one night after Daniel came home. They were both sitting
on the couch, thoroughly exhausted. “How was work?” He squirmed, trying to
figure out how to answer.
“Um, it was...interesting.”
“How so?” She knew better than to let that be his final answer.
“Well, it dealt with the, uh, mating rituals of this one culture.”
“Now THAT sounds awkward.”
“It is. I think one of the native people has taken Lieutenant Lansing as a
husband.”
“Why do you say that?”, she asked, not sure if she wanted to know the
answer.
“Because when he helped her with a few basic chores while waiting for the
expedition group to return, another...man...challenged him to a fight to the
death.”
“Oh, my God!”, gasped Janet, covering her mouth with her hands, “Is
Lansing...”
“Alive? Yes. He, um, won...his new bride.” Both were silent for a few
moments. He continued.
“Now I have to find a way to, annul the marriage.”
“To get him outta there and still save face with these people?” She was
more perceptive than he thought. She would have made a good diplomat.
“Yes. Exactly.” Again there was a quiet stillness in the air. Finally,
Daniel broke the silence.
“I’m just glad I’ll never have to do that if and when I decide to get
married again.”
“I’ve wondered about that too.”, added Janet.
“Wondered about what?”
“Getting married again. Will I ever get the chance?” She sighed a long
sigh which seemed to say that she longed for something. Daniel sensed this.
“I wouldn’t worry about that.”, he comforted.
“Oh?”, she inquired, interested to know what his answer would be, “Why?”
“Well, with a woman as smart, and beautiful, and wonderful as you, it’s
just a matter of time before a handsome gentleman falls hopelessly in love
with you.”
“And who’s the handsome gentleman who would fall in love with a five foot
two inch tall, divorced, blind woman with a teenage daughter?” The tension
was palatable as she waited for his response, a slight smile on her lips.
“Me.”
She turned to face him. Though she couldn’t actually see him, she could
imagine the look on his face. So caring, so loving. She touched his cheeks
with her hands and leaned in. Not wishing to loose the moment, he reached
over and pulled her into his arms, brushing his lips lightly against hers.
She felt his lips brush hers and pressed more forcefully against him,
deepening the kiss. It lingered on as they tasted each other, caressed each
other. Her hand ran through his hair, while her other found its way across
his back, completing their embrace. It was a wonderful feeling for both of
them; the tender kissing, the physical closeness and intimacy, it was
something they had both needed for years. And now, as they were locked in
passionate oneness, they were finally able to share their love, their very
being.
From the balcony above the living room, Cassie watched in silence...and
smiled.
