Janet's brain knew there was no chance. Daniel had as good as told her
that the kisses they had shared in the garden had meant nothing, that
there was no hope for anything more than friendship.
Her emotions, her heart, her soul, screamed out that he was wrong, that
there was every chance. Though her intellect protested, there was a part
of her that knew, was utterly convinced, that he was her happiness.
Both sides of her personality infuriated Janet. When she took the time to
think about it - which was far too often, considering she had a very
demanding job and a teenage daughter - she figured that, when it came to
hoping for a relationship with Daniel, she was damned if she did and
damned if she didn't.
Janet, both mind and heart, accepted the fact that she was falling in love
with Daniel, if she wasn't there already. Her internal conflict came
mainly from how she acted towards him.
No amount of analysing kept her cheeks from flushing or her heart from
beating faster when she saw him, talked to him. However, she felt that,
considering, she was doing a fairly good job of acting normal around him.
The effort was killing her.
She couldn't do it anymore. Her brain clearly didn't want to admit it, but
no amount of reason could ignore the violence of the plea from her
feelings. She needed closure, healing, catharsis.
She needed him.
She was at his doorstep. She barely remembered getting there. Her heart
and mind and body had worked in unison to bring her here, and she was left
with a short list of choices, none with guaranteed outcomes.
Janet knocked quickly at the door, mildly surprised at her own nerve. What
on earth was she going to do?
Daniel grinned when he saw her. "Hey! How are you? What brings you to this
neck of the woods - oh, God, I've been possessed by Jack. What brings you
here?"
"I was in the neighborhood and -" Janet stopped herself. An excuse was bad
enough, but did she really have to use the world's most clichéd? "I needed
to talk to you," she said simply.
"Come in." Daniel moved back so she could step into the apartment. "What
did you need to talk about? Are you okay?"
Janet opened her mouth only to find that words had failed her. What could
she say that could possibly make sense?
Nothing. She closed her mouth again.
Then she leaned in and pressed it gently to his.
He kissed her back.
