"Those little girls are a pest,
Big girls are the best."
- "Big Girls Are Best," U2

Janet opened her daughter's door a crack. "Cass?"

"Come in," Cassandra called. She sat cross-legged on her bed, a book in hand, the radio playing something mellow that Janet didn't recognize.

Janet moved to sit beside Cassie. "Are… are you okay?" she asked, feeling abysmally foolish. "I know… I know that must have been a shock. I wasn't expecting him, I wasn't expecting that. I would have told you if anything…"

"Mom," Cassie cut in. "You're babbling."

"I'm sorry." Janet paused. "But Cass -"

Cassie interrupted again. "Don't feel like you have to explain," she said. "You're a big girl, Mom, you're allowed to… whatever."

Janet peered into her daughter's face. Cassie didn't seem upset; in fact, there was a smile at the corners of her lips and a glint in her eyes. Still… "Cass, would you be okay if Daniel and I got together?"

"Of course," Cassie answered immediately. Her tone was relaxed, easy. "I told you, Mom, you're allowed to make your own decisions. Besides, I really like Daniel. He's really sweet. And cute, too. I'd say you've got a winner, Mom."

Janet blushed. "You can't tell me things like that!" she cried, somewhat scandalized. So much for thinking of Cassie as her little girl.

"Why not?" Cassie asked. "I'm not two years old. You asked my opinion."

Somehow, Janet didn't think that in most situations like these it was the daughter who was calm and the mother who was a wreck. She decided not to answer Cassie's question, as it could easily lead to her being even more embarrassed. "You really don't mind?"

"Mind? I'm thrilled. I love you. I want you to be happy, and I know you haven't been lately. I didn't want to ask, but… it was him, wasn't it?"

"Yeah." Janet nodded and gave a weak smile. "I'm sorry."

"Mom, it's okay." Cassie scooted up the bed to give Janet a hug. "I told you, all I want is for you to be happy."

Janet leaned into her daughter, and kissed her cheek. "When did you get to be so mature?" she murmured into Cassie's hair.

She could feel Cassie's smile, though she couldn't see her daughter's face. "I learned from my mom. She's the best," Cassie replied.

"Thank you for being happy."
