**********
I slam my pencil down on the table and glare at the artifact I’m
*trying* to translate.
By *all* laws of language, this *should* be easily translated. But
unfortunately, doesn’t seem to follow those laws and it
*doesn’t* make sense at all.
I sigh and reach for my coffee mug. I’ve been at this for hours and
hours and I’m getting totally pissed off at the damn artefact.
I really, really wish I hadn’t turned Janet down this morning. I
could have really used the break and of course spending time with Janet
is definitely on my list of good things to do.
I take a sip of my coffee, which I immediately spit out since it’s
cold. I glare some more at the artifact before giving up for a while
to go in search of some nice, hot, strong coffee.
Sometimes I wonder why I bother pulling all-nighters at the base, when
the only coffee around is military gunk that tastes like crap and looks
like it too.
My thoughts turn back to Janet. I still remember, exactly, the time
I first met her.
It was when I first came to the base and was trying to crack the
Stargate’s code. She was a doctor here, not head doctor then; she
didn’t become CMO until the other one, what was his name again? Doesn’t
really matter… well he retired and Janet was next in line for a
promotion so she got the job.
It was on one of my frequent trips to find more coffee, the same junk
as they have now, of course. She came up to me in one of the corridors,
and stopped me. “Dr Jackson?” when I nodded, forming a silent question
on my lips, she quickly gave me a hug, then pulled back, embarrassed.
“We’re all behind you, the nurses and doctors…we all want you to
succeed,” then with the quick flash of a smile she was gone again and I
continued on my trip to get coffee, puzzling over why she had done
that.
I saw her a few more times while I was on the base, but all those times
she didn’t seem to notice me. I never forgot that hug though, I wonder
if she still remembers.
I turn the corner into the commissary, only to be greeted by the
commissary staff clearing up for the night.
“Sorry Dr D, the coffee machines are already off for the night,” one of
the staff says. “Unless you’ve got your own private machine in your
office, you’re outta luck.”
“Thanks anyway.” Ok…definitely time to go home and get some sleep now,
maybe I’ll go see Janet in the morning?
Yeah, I think I will.

You liked? Telling me is a very good idea...or I might not write the
sequel I have planned for this one... *innocent smile*
